Easter Island Vlog: A Photo Story from Hanga Roa, Chile

Hi! My name is Caya (CayaPhoto) and I like telling stories with my videos and my photos. This is the first attempt I make at a new format.
_________________
I moved to Santiago in late 2013. My company had just been accepted in a program for startups called Startup Chile, and my co-founders and I moved there for 6 months.
Flying to Easter Island is expensive. A Flight from Santiago on good dates is about $500, and trust me, we waited. Back then I lived on a $1,200 salary which is OK for Santiago but certainly not enough to travel much. I also had debt I had piled up from my previously failed startup attempt.
Our friends in startup Chile made trips to Torres del Paine, Atacama Desert and even Argentina, we saved up for Easter Island.
Less than a week before the trip I had been back home, where I learned I was going to be a dad. I was still wrapping my head around this as we flew out. I even considered canceling the trip, considering how broke I was, working for a still uncertain startup… and with a kid on the way, but luckily most expenses had already been paid for.
Rapa Nui, as the locals call this landmark island, is one of the most isolated places on Earth. A flight from Santiago, the nearest continental land mass is over 5 hours. Only about 4,000 people live on the tiny Island, which is just 25 km or 15 miles across.
Accommodations are quite humble, but Easter island is beautiful.
Wild horses roam the prairies. An inactive volcano crater dominates the landscape. Unsurprisingly, the locals settled Orongo, one of their villages there well over 500 years ago; most of which still stands and seems stolen out of the Last Jedi, or the other way around.
There’s a single beach on Rapa Nui, on the far side of the Island, the rest of the coast is made up of sharp, black, volcanic rock.
This volcanic rock is the material in which the Moai were sculpted, which is of course the reason we were there. As a kid my mom used to tell me how much she dreamt of visiting… and here I was, lucky enough to visit as early as my twenties.
The first statue you’ll probably see is the lonely Te Ata Hero, near Hanga Roa, the population center... only a few steps from there is Ahu Tahai, where you’ll see one of the best restored statues, with eyes and Pukao.
Over 900 statues were carved on Rapa Nui, between the years 1250 and 1500... and you can truly see the evolution of their designs, from very basic and simple shapes to the more stylized and ambitious statues.
They were carved as a symbol of political power and it’s also believed that they represented their ancestors. When the island was discovered on 1722 all the moai were standing, but by the 19th century they had all been toppled. It is believed that tribal rivalries over changing religions was the reason for the conflict. All the moai standing today were brought back up by archeologists.
The most mind boggling place on the island is Rano Raraku, the quarry were all of the moai were sculpted. While smaller, lighter pieces were transported over 10 miles across the island, the biggest moai never made it out of the quarry... they were just left abandoned.
This moai which was left incomplete, is 70ft or 21m long and weighs 270 tons. Walking the slopes of this crater turned quarry is out of this world.
A couple kilometers down stands Ahu Tongariki, the biggest Ahu on the island with the biggest Moai outside of the quarry. We heard this was a great place for sunrises, so on our last day on the island, we woke up at 3am in the morning and drove our rented scooter there.
There are no street lamps outside Hanga Roa, and without any planning this happened to be a new moon night. I had never seen stars so bright. You could walk around just with the starlight.
I only had my old Sony alpha nex-3 then, that my uncle sold to me. Luckily, he had bought a 16mm Lens that he included in the deal. This was my first time trying astrophotography.
I balanced the camera on the motorcycle seat, since I was carrying no tripod and we shot these.
To photograph the Ahu, I balanced the camera on the grass with some rocks. A couple or decent shots came up, with a coincidentally aligned Milky Way... but I wasn’t able to get enough light on the moai.
This is when a car drove by. By the strangest coincidence a car drove by at 4:30am in the morning, just as I was exposing the 30 second shot. The headlights illuminated the statues just right, with just the right amount of light… and I captured this.
We moved out of Chile only a couple weeks after this trip. With the both amazing and scary news I had received just a week earlier, escaping to Easter Island for a week helped me remain sane, and prepare for what was to come.
Visiting Easter Island Travel Guide (Isla de Pascua - Rapa Nui)
Sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself and you take it. Traveling to Easter Island (known locally as Rapa Nui and in Spanish as Isla de Pascua) was something we never thought possible in our lifetimes. However, when a short-time discounted airfare was available, we snapped it up and with an opportunity to explore the island slowly, we spent time hiking, walking and renting a vehicle to cover as much as the island as possible. The following Easter Island travel video is our best attempt to document our day to day adventure in the form of a series of vlogs from Day 1 to Day 7. We feel that if you're going to experience the best Easter Island has to offer you had better give yourself a 4 to 7 days.
Our visit Easter Island travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including all of the various moai statues, beaches and best locations for sunset and sunrise photos. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Easter Island tourism brochure.

Visiting Easter Island Travel Documentary (Isla de Pascua - Rapa Nui) Polynesia Video Transcript:
After close to a month travelling around Chile, Sam and I hopped on a plane to visit Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui. This was the closest we were ever going to get to this remote speck in the ocean, which also happens to be the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. We gave ourselves one full week to explore Isla de Pascua, and what follows is a travel guide of our time there. We hiked ancient volcanoes, stood face to face with the moai, watched spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and road tripped around the island while wild horses ran alongside. It was an incredible week and we hope this video will inspire you to plan your own visit to Easter Island.
Rano Kau is 324 meters tall and it is located on the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui. We hiked all the way from town, and because of it’s gradual incline, we found it to be a relatively easy activity. That being said, we would recommend doing it early in the morning, since there were very few shaded areas along the way.
Orongo is a village and ceremonial site located just past the Rano Kau Crater. Unfortunately, it started pouring rain shortly after we reached the site, so we didn’t get to visit, but we made plans to return later that week.
That evening we made our way into Hanga Roa to watch the sun set from the harbour. There were lots of surfers out on the water, and the waves kept rolling in and crashing against the rocks.
After the market we took a walk to Ahu Tahai, which is a ceremonial complex that holds 3 different ‘ahus’ or platforms with moai. Perhaps the most famed of the three is Ahu Ko Te Riku, which stands out from the rest because it has restored eyes.
Having already visited Ahu Tahai by day, we still made it a point to come in the late afternoon.
Rano Raraku is yet another volcano crater found on the island, and it is also the site of the quarry that supplied the stone for the hundreds of moai that can be found on the island. The quarry is believed to have been in use for a span of 500 years up until the early 18th century when activity ceased. It would also appear that this site was abandoned in a rush since many of the moai here are unfinished.
After seeing the moai scattered on the slopes of the volcano, we took a little detour and hiked into the crater. We also spotted wild horses and a few moai inside the crater, which was quite unexpected.
From there we continued on to Ahu Tongariki for a quick visit. This site is home to 15 moai, making it the biggest ‘ahu’ on the island.
The best place to catch the sunrise in Rapa Nui is at Ahu Tongariki. We made the drive in the dark and we arrived just as the sky was beginning to show it’s soft morning colours.
One of the best decisions we made on our trip was to rent a car so that we would have the ability to explore all of Easter Island.
And just like that our week on Easter Island was up! Rapa Nui is one of the most fascinating places we have ever visited, and we loved getting to explore every inch of the island.
This is part of our Travel in Easter Island Rapa Nui (Isla de Pascua) series.

Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) with music by Haumoana
These photos were all taken by wife and I during a one-month research trip to Rapa Nui in August of 2006. We knew Itto from Hawaii and traveled with him to Rapa Nui and stayed with his family who are as genuine and kind as he is. Rapa Nui is almost without words to describe it. It has to be experienced. Such a special place. I purposely didn't include my family from most of the included shots because I wanted to tell the story of Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui with its own images and music.
Itto Haumoana Pakarati was born in 1984 on the mystifying and captivating island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), surrounded by hundred miles of blue water in the south Pacific. Rapa Nui lies halfway between Chile and Tahiti and is one of the most isolated and amazing places on earth. Itto is the son of a native Rapa Nui couple, but months after his birth, his mother left him and his father died. He was taken and raised by his grandmother who is the inspiration of my life.
Itto began his musical journey with a cracked guitar at the age of twelve. Being left handed, he was taught and forced to play with his right hand. After two years he switched the guitar and started playing with his left hand. Today, he is one of the few musicians in the world that plays guitar with the strings up side down, such as well known guitarists Coco Montoya and Jimmy Hendrix. Itto Pakarati was introduced to the music world by his uncle Kio Teao (R.I.P).
Itto Pakarati produced his first album Moana locally in 2003 which allowed him the funds to study in Los Angeles for two years. He then studied Music and Business at BYU-Hawaii from 2005-2009. In 2012 he produced his album Land of Kings under his Polynesian name Haumoana.
Haumoana has traveled and toured the world singing in Asia, Polynesia, and North and South America. Follow him on Facebook at or on Instagram at

There is one place where we can see the image of religious fusion. It is the Easter Island cemetery. The tombstones are in the shape of a cross or moai. Its appearance is unique and diverse. The Rapa Nui who had to coexist with the western powers and inevitable sadness. The tombstone seems to contain their affection.

EASTER ISLAND in 3 minutes!!!
After a big night drinking with a friend, we ended up stumbling home and booking last-minute flights to Easter Island.
We had a week there and managed to fit in an insane amount of things to do on Easter Island.
From scuba diving to caving, driving around to hiking, and learning everything we could about the famous moai statues, it was an incredible experience.
We used Hanga Roa Eco Village and Spa as our accommodation on Rapa Nui, and it was amazing!
