Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race | California Travel Tips
California travel guide Veronica Hill heads to Balboa in Newport Beach for the kickoff of the 2013 Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race. Held the weekend before the big Newport to Ensenada race, this family-friendly event is packed with things to do. You can watch plein-air and sidewalk artists create new masterpieces, go on a horse-drawn carriage ride around the square, or head inside ExplorOcean for some model boat building.
Be sure to arrive at Balboa's kickoff party with an empty stomach. Their Stroll, Sample and Sip serves up small bites from the area's best restaurants, from crab cakes with mango salsa at Newport Landing to a decadent coconut-crusted salmon from Harborside Restaurant. And if you're in need of a cold beverage, the Stella Artois Beer and Mt. Gay Rum Garden is just steps away.
Held since 1947 by the Newport Ocean Sailing Association, the race started as a fun run after World War II. It ends with a festive post-race party at the Bahia Hotel in Ensenada. This is the world's largest yachting race, running 125 miles from Newport to Ensenada. More than 20 classes compete, from ultra lights to maxi yachts. The current record was set in 1998 — at 6 hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds.
Roy Disney, Humphrey Bogart and Walter Cronkite are among the celebrities who have taken part in the race. Bob Kettenhofen, owner of the Beck 60, Dare, gave us a preview of his boat, which was chartered by Roy Disney for a Trans-Pacific Race. Kettenhofen often takes Sea Scouts out on the boat, and was among the boats competing at the 2013 Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race.

Virgin Oceanic Super Catamaran (Cheyenne) - Taking the Ferry to Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA
According to Wikipedia... Cheyenne is the name of a catamaran owned by Virgin Oceanic and operated by Virgin Oceanic's co-found Chris Welsh. Cheyenne was formerly owned and operated by Steve Fosset. In 2001 Fosset and his crew crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 4 days and 17 hours establishing a new world record for crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a sail vessel. In 2006 Cheyenne's mast broke due to severe weather off the coast of Argentina. Cheyenne was converted to a power catamaran and underwent significant changes and became the mothership for Virgin Oceanic's deep sea exploration mission called 5 Dives.
Since 1919, Balboa Island Ferry has provided continuous service between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula. Crossings approximate 800 feet. Via bridges, driving around Newport Harbor is also possible. However, the distance increases by six miles. Some choose the ferry's more direct route. Many enjoy the scenic crossing. All experience an historic charm. Welcome aboard!
Newport Harbor Nautical Museum Launches New ExplorOcean Exhibit
Around and About Orange County reporters Amy Metz, Maryana Gomez and Linda Ivanov bring you the highlights of the Opening Night Gala where plans for this exciting new exhibit were revealed. (B-roll footage courtesy of the nautical museum.)
In partnership with Virgin Ocean, the nautical museum brought together best designers, architects and imaginators and asked two simple, yet powerful, words -- What if? The end result is an epic adventure of oceanic exploration. Rather than using conventional 3D models or architectural renderings to convey our innovative and ground-breaking concepts, our Preview Center allows you to fully experience our vision through integration of fly-through videos, in-theatre demonstrations, multi-media presentations and immersive experiences. This is what happens when blue-sky thinking meets the seven seas.

Hurricane of 1939
In the summer of 1939 in Newport Beach, unusually warm weather produced a rare event in Southern California - a hurricane! The storm happened right off the Balboa Peninsula and caused damage to local property and stress to residents. Luckily no one was killed but some daring surfers actually risked their lives going out into the dangerous waters to rescue two overboard sailors. Check out the short documentary to learn more about this interesting part of Newport Beach's history.
