A bit of info about the Banks Peninsula from ChristchurchNZ:
A journey around this beautiful peninsula will reward you with picturesque vistas at every turn, a thriving artisan culture and a marine environment teaming with wildlife. Come and immerse yourself in the alluring French character of Akaroa township – a seaside retreat just 90 minutes from Christchurch.
Akaroa simply oozes charm! Nods to its history as a French settlement are everywhere, with pretty French-named streets, lined with historic cottages cloaked in roses. While away the hours browsing boutique shops and craft galleries, and stop for a pick-me-up of fine local food and wine at a café or restaurant overlooking the shimmering waters of Akaroa Harbour. Relaxation doesn’t get much better than this!

Walk with me on the Quail Island, Christchurch, New Zealand,
Ōtamahua/Quail Island is an inner harbour island, reached via a short ferry ride from Lyttelton. It's Canterbury’s largest island but is easily explored in a day.
Wildlife
Birds such as black-backed/karoro and red-billed gull/tarāpunga, white-flippered penguins/kororā, terns, shags and oystercatchers are often seen from the observation point. Fantails/pīwakawaka and grey warblers/ iroriro are present on the island.
Banks Peninsula tree weta have recently been transferred to the island - you may see custom-built weta homes attached to the trunks of manuka trees.
On warm summer days you’re likely to spot resident lizards like geckos and skinks.
The Ōtamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust and DOC are working to establish native vegetation and re-introduce native wildlife. A maintained network of traps protects the island from introduced predators, with the exception of mice. The island has been free of possums, rabbits, cats, hedgehogs, mustelids and rats since 2006.
Know before you go
Toilets are located at Whakamaru Beach (swimmers beach), Skiers Beach and the Caretaker's Cottage.
Most track surfaces on the island are evenly graded or grassed, but sturdy footwear is recommended.
The island contains a number of tracks used by the Ōtamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust for planting access. Stay on marked tracks to avoid stepping on new plants and for your own personal safety.
Carry adequate clothing and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather - parts of the island are very exposed.
All walking times are approximate.
There are preciptitous unfenced cliffs. Supervise small children at all times.
There is a danger of windfall or treefall in high or gusty wind conditions.
Ōtamahua / Quail Island is at times subject to extreme fire danger. If fire breaks out on the island:
Head to the nearest beach or coastal area, if it is safe to do so.
If you have a mobile, dial 111 for fire.
Look after the island
No fires except gas-fired BBQs in the picnic area on Whakamaru Beach (swimmers beach).
All animals, including dogs, are prohibited, as is the carrying of firearms.
All wildlife, plants, natural and historic features are protected. Be respectful.
Take home your rubbish.
No unauthorised vehicles (including mountain bikes) allowed.
Camping is permitted only in designated areas.
Bait stations and predator traps are in use at all times. Read the warning signs on the wharf and around the island.
Do not remove rocks from the sea wall along the beach.
Camping on the island for approved groups
Overnight camping on the island is available at Whakamaru Beach (swimmers beach) for approved groups.

More adventuring on Banks Peninsula with a great bunch of people. Exploring some new tracks I've never seen even though I've lived here all my life :)
Second big ride on the new Yamaha XT600 (new to me anyhoo). Loving the bike though I feel sorry for the paint after Birdlings Flat, as you'll see in the video.

SUMMARY
=======
An Mw 6.2 earthquake occurred in Christchurch on 22 February 2011 at 12:51 p.m. local time (23:51 UTC, 21 February). The earthquake struck the Canterbury Region in New Zealand's South Island and was centred two kilometres (1.2 mi) west of the port town of Lyttelton, and 10 kilometres (6 mi) south-east of the centre of Christchurch, at the time New Zealand's second-most populous city. The earthquake caused widespread damage across Christchurch, killing 185 people in the nation's fifth-deadliest disaster.
Christchurch's central city and eastern suburbs were badly affected, with damage to buildings and infrastructure already weakened by the magnitude 7.1 Canterbury earthquake of 4 September 2010 and its aftershocks. Significant liquefaction affected the eastern suburbs, producing around 400,000 tonnes of silt. The earthquake was felt across the South Island and parts of the lower and central North Island. While the initial quake only lasted for approximately 10 seconds, the damage was severe because of the location and shallowness of the earthquake's focus in relation to Christchurch as well as previous quake damage. Subsequent population loss saw the Christchurch main urban area fall behind the Wellington equivalent to decrease from second to third most populous area in New Zealand.

SUMMARY
=======
The South Island (Māori: Te Waipounamu) is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand in surface area; the other being the smaller but more populous North Island. It is bordered to the north by Cook Strait, to the west by the Tasman Sea, and to the south and east by the Pacific Ocean. The South Island covers 150,437 square kilometres (58,084 sq mi), making it the world's 12th-largest island. It has a temperate climate.
It has a 32 percent larger landmass than the North Island so is sometimes referred to as the mainland of New Zealand, especially by South Island residents, but only 23 percent of New Zealand's 4.9 million inhabitants live there. In the early stages of European (Pākehā) settlement of the country, the South Island had the majority of the European population and wealth due to the 1860s gold rushes. The North Island population overtook the South in the early 20th century, with 56 percent of the population living in the North in 1911, and the drift north of people and businesses continued throughout the century.
