HO CHI MINH, VIETNAM TRAVEL GUIDE 2019 | Indochina S02E01
It has been a long-time dream to explore Indochina and for my birthday this year, it came true! This is a 12-day trip and our first stop is — Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam!
What I really love about traveling is not solely about experiencing different cultures, trying out local food, and whatnot. It is about meeting people from different parts of the globe, establishing a relationship, and then creating a dynamic network of connections.
How I wish I allotted more time exploring Vietnam, it is definitely underrated. Our itinerary was so jam-packed because we only had 24 hours to explore the city!
If you are visiting Ho Chi Minh or Vietnam soon, I suggest that you also visit Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Mekong Delta, and other places. Maybe a 5D4N stay should be enough to do that!
So that's it, pancit! This is the first episode of my Indochina series. Next episode, we will feature the Kingdom of Cambodia!
Share your most unforgettable experience in Vietnam in the comments!

Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội, Hán Tự: 河内) pronunciation (help·info), estimated population 6.232.940 (2008) [1], is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, with a few brief interruptions, it was the political centre of an independent Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.
The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85Coordinates: 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85, 1760 km (1094 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon.
On May 29 2008, it was decided that Ha Tay province, Vinh Phuc's Me Linh district and 4 communes of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh is merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1 2008[2]. Hanoi's total area increased to 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions[3] with the new population being 6,232,940[3]. The Hanoi Capital Region (Vietnamese: Vùng Thủ Đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under planning will have an area of 13,436 square kilometers with a population of 15 million by 2020[4]. October 2010 will officially mark 1000 years of the establishment of the city.
As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike. Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen dynasty in 1802, the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage. The city boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved.[10]
Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, including over 600 pagodas and temples.[11]
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food.
Some others prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1070; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900 year old citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Dinh square. [12]
A city between the rivers, built from lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and sometime is called city of lakes. Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Halais Lake (Hồ Thiền Quang) in Vietnamese), and Bay Mau Lake. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. There are small boats for hire and a floating restaurant.
Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards (e.g. Phan Dinh Phung street), The Grand Opera House, The State Bank of Vietnam (formerly The Bank of Indochina), The Presidential Palace (formerly Place of The Governor-General of French Indochina), the cathédrale St-Joseph, and historic hotel Sofitel Metropole.

Vietnam (UK /ˌvjɛtˈnæm, -ˈnɑːm/, US Listeni/ˌviːətˈnɑːm, -ˈnæm/;[6] Vietnamese: Việt Nam [viət˨ næm˧] ( listen)), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV; Vietnamese: Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam (About this sound listen)), is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 90.5 million inhabitants as of 2014, it is the world's 14th-most-populous country, and the eighth-most-populous Asian country. Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and Malaysia across the South China Sea to the southeast.[d] Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1975.
Vietnam was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, from 111 BC to AD 939. An independent Vietnamese state was formed in 939, following a Vietnamese victory in the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese royal dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. Following a Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War, eventually expelling the French in 1954. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states, North and South Vietnam. Conflict between the two sides intensified in what is known as the Vietnam War. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.
Vietnam was then unified under a communist government but remained impoverished and politically isolated. In 1986, the government initiated a series of economic and political reforms which began Vietnam's path towards integration into the world economy.By 2000, it had established diplomatic relations with all nations. Since 2000, Vietnam's economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world, and, in 2011, it had the highest Global Growth Generators Index among 11 major economies. Its successful economic reforms resulted in its joining the World Trade Organization in 2007. It is also an historical member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. Vietnam remains one of the world's five remaining one-party socialist states officially espousing communism.
Backpacking Hanoi, Vietnam - Indochina (Sleeper Bus, The Old Quarter) - Vlog 11
Ciao Beatiful people!
My brother and I went backpacking in Indochina. Y'all curious how we did it for the first time? ;)
It ain't easy planning our trip as we got zero clue about their land transport system and language... they dont even speak english. But with a very keen research, it's all possible!
This is part one:
Video Index:
01:40 - Old Quarter House (Hanoi Accommodation)
02:40 - Pho Bo 69 (Really good Pho/Vietnamese Noodles)
04:29 - Pho Gia Truyen (Popular Pho in Old Quarters)
05:04 - Manh Coffee (Coconut Coffee / Ca Phe Cot Dua)
05:15 - Banh Mi A (Banh Mi Ga Quay, Ca Phe Trung)
05:50 - Old Quarter
06:05 - Hoan Kiem Lake
07:05 - Nuoc Ngam Bus Station (Sleeper Bus from Hanoi to Vientiane)
08:30 - Sleeper Bus Overview
10:00 - Vietnam-Laos Border / Immigration
Here are some tips before you go Backpacking Indochina/Hanoi:
- Book your bus through Baolau or Bookmebus (they're the best choice out there). Remember to book at least 1 week ahead.
- Book your activities and tours through Klook. reliable, affordable, and better services.
- Book your other activities and tours through airbnb too.
- Book your accommodation through Booking.com, the hotels/motels are so cheap but the quality is good! No need for homestays or airbnb if u aint needing kitchen etc.
- Bring US dollars. Easier to exchange. Most shops especially in Cambodia accepts USD as payment.
- Download offline maps of each country/city in google. Trust me, it's a life saver.
- You can wear tank tops, shirts, shorts in each country. But if you're going to sacred places like temples, you've got to wear shirts and pants.
- Use Taxi/Grab in Vietnam / Laos / Cambodia, it's fairly cheaper than Philippines. Thailand has the same rate. If you dont wanna haggle the rate of the taxi, better book through Grab. Safer and reliable. Try tuktuk, these are like pedicabs / tricycles, cheaper but it'll take longer.
- Bring Off Lotion (Insect repellant), small towel, toiletries, tissues, emergency meds/pills when Backpacking. Anything that you could think off but mind the weight especially when you're going home through plane.
- Eat as much street food and drinks as you can, it's cheap and a once-in-a-lifetime moment... yah including the exotic ones. ;)
- If you're part of ASEAN, you don't need visa. However, if you're from other non participating countries, you can apply beforehand or have visa on arrival. Check your passports entry power. It's fairly easy to go to each countries immigration, it's different from the ones on the airport but pretty much the same process.
- Take lots of videos not only pictures! The views are really magnificent.
