MEKONG DELTA VIETNAM - Saigon Day Trip
We experienced local life along the Mekong Delta Vietnam for our last day in Saigon. We show you the best Saigon day trip that Vietnam has to offer, traveling by boat down the Mekong Delta and exploring a local Vietnam village along the way.
Our trip to the Mekong Delta Vietnam started with a 2 hour luxury van ride to a town called My Tho. Although we don’t normally take public tours, we arranged a small 6 person group tour with Vietnam Adventure Tours. Once we arrived in My Tho, we boarded a private boat to set sail down the Mekong Delta River. The 15 minute boat ride took us across the Mekong river to unicorn island where we explored a tourist area set up to mimic a traditional Vietnam Village. The activities on this island include: Bee Farm and Honey Tasting, Snake Holding, Coconut Candy Production, Chocolate Production, Snake Wine, and a Fruit Farm with traditional Mekong Delta music.
Next we got back on the Vietnam boat tour down the Mekong Delta to visit the area of Ben Tre. This is where we got to see a side of a more authentic Vietnam by boating down the river in a small sampan boat. This is one of the best things to do in Vietnam because you get to experience a world away from all development. We wish this part of the Mekong river tour was longer, as the small sampan boat ride was only 15 minutes long.
Next up on the Mekong Delta Tour was lunch which was included in our tour and very delicious. We were served a variety of Vietnamese food including fish, spring rolls, soup, rice, morning glory and prawns. The Vietnamese lunch was absolutely delicious!
When visiting Saigon Vietnam, we highly recommend you put a Mekong Delta Tour on your list of must do activities. Out of all the things to do in Saigon, this was one of our favorites! A quick 2 hour Saigon day trip away seems like a completely separate world apart from the hustle of Ho Chi Minh City.
If you’re interested in booking one of the best tours in Saigon, contact Vietnam Adventure Tours and request Van as your tour guide! The tour you see is the VIP Mekong Delta Tour with a luxury 7 person limo. Most Mekong tours start from $15 USD and go up to $80 USD for a public tour, and private tours are $80 USD per person and up. We hope you enjoyed our trip down the Vietnam Mekong Delta and if you have any questions please leave us a comment! We’d love to hear about your Vietnam travel or plans to visit the area.

Mekong Delta Day Tour + Cruise: My Tho, Vinh Trang, Tien River, Tortoise Islet Vietnam | Vlog #26
Hey, guys. What is good?
It is my second day here in Vietnam and I went on a tour that is two hours from Ho Chi Minh City. This is the famous Full Day Mekong Delta Tour, which I availed in Klook for Php 783 and all I can say that it is worth it!
On this video, our first stop was the Vinh Trang Pagoda/Temple which is in the province of My Tho. Then we proceeded to the Tien River cruise that lasted about 20-30 minutes. Then we finished the first half of the tour at Tortoise Islet when we had our lunch... It was included on the tour!

The Mekong Delta is Life - Can Tho, Vietnam
This week on Exploring Vietnam, I explore the largest city in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho. Via bicycle, boat, and foot I check out the various life that makes Can Tho the amazing vibrant place that it is. In the countryside, I see rice paddy fields and fruit trees. In Tân An market, I identify some of the areas favorite fish. And a boat trip to the floating market Cai Rang has my head spinning at the beautiful ballet of chaos.

Vietnam (Can Tho Floating Markets:
Cần Thơ ( listen) is the fifth largest city in Vietnam, and the largest city in the Mekong delta. It is noted for its floating market, rice-paper-making village, and picturesque rural canals. It had a population of 1.2 million as of 2011, and is located on the south bank of the Hau River, a branch of the Mekong. In 2007, there are about 50 people died in Can Tho bridge's construction, Vietnam's worst engineering disaster. In 2011, Can Tho International Airport opened. The name Can Tho is a shortened form of cầm thi giang, meaning river of poems. The city is nicknamed the western capital (Tây Đô), and is located 169 km from Ho Chi Minh City. Can Tho's climate is tropical and monsoonal with two seasons: rainy, from May to November; and dry, from December to April. Average annual humidity is 83%, rainfall 1,635 mm and temperature 27 °C.
Life in the Mekong Delta
The Mekong Delta was an ancient Khmer territory. The area was mostly marshland and forest. When the Nguyen Lords took control of this region, a series of canals were built and a system of transportation was implemented in the maze of water ways in the area.
The Mekong Delta is divided into 9 provinces: Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, Hau Giang and Minh Hai. The people in this region are made up of Vietnamese and some people of Khmer, Chinese and Cham origin. This accounts for the variety of religions that add to the cultural diversity of this area. Among the religions practiced here are: Buddhism, Catholicism, Cao Dai, Hoa Hao and Islam.
The southwest region of Vietnam is known for the vast rice fields and the huge plantations that make up the core of this region's economy. The region is also known for the many miles of waterways criss-crossing the land making this area both fertile and unique.
The people living in the Mekong Delta make their living as farmers and fishermen.
Often, they live right on the edge of the rivers or canals on various structures built from whatever materials found. Consequently, the architecture along the delta varies from place to place.
Often, many homes have fisheries right under them. Enterprising individuals build a cage like structure of bamboo beneath their homes on these waterways to house fishes. As the fishes grew, they sell the whole batch to processors from the city and start with new ones.
Life in the delta is tightly woven with its rivers as daily activities and businesses are conducted on its banks. Markets, stores, ship yards, repair shops are some of the more popular trades.
A homestay among the people of the Mekong Delta is an unforgettable experience and can give you a unique insight into the day-to-day lives of the local people. The bulk of the local people here make their living from growing fruit or cultivating rice.
Many of the homes that are open to Western visitors are on the banks of the Mekong River. When you reach the home of your host family, you should remove your shoes. Most families also prefer women to be well covered up.In traditional houses, the sleeping area is open plan and has hammocks and wooden beds with mosquito nets hanging overhead (before the last rays of the sun disappear slap on plenty of repellent, as mosquitoes are rampant throughout the area).
A typical supper is the local favourite, elephant-ear fish, served beit upright on a bed of greens with flourishes of carrots shaped as water flowers. The flesh of the fish is pulled off in chunks with chopsticks and wrapped into a rice-paper pancake and dipped into sauce. This is accompanied by crispy spring rolls, followed by soup and rice (Mekong rice Is considered the most flavoursome).
After dinner some families exchange stories and songs over bottles o( rice wine long into the night, while others cluster around the TV.
The morning starts as the first lights flicker across the water. Before breakfast, everyone takes a bath with the family. Splashing around in the muddy Mekong, fully dressed, can leave you feeling dirtier than when you started! After a hearty breakfast you say your goodbyes and head back to Vinh Long via the floating market.
The Mekong River is the heart and soul of mainland Southeast Asia. The 12th longest river in the world, the Mekong runs 4,800 kilometers from its headwaters on the Tibetan Plateau through Yunnan Province of China, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam. It is the largest river in Southeast Asia. The river forms the border between Laos and Myanmar (Burma) and most of the border between Laos.

Mekong Delta Floating Markets // Can Tho, Vietnam
Riding in a boat for seven hours through the Mekong Delta region was probably one of the most wonderful experiences I have had since the beginning of my travels. I generally love begin on water, and to see a community and system of commerce in these waterways was such a treat!
In this video, I take you along as we visit the Cai Rang and Phong Dien floating markets. We also stop by a rice noodle maker and a local village. See how the locals live and work on and around the water while taking in the breathtakingly lush environment.
THE DEETS
-I stayed in Can Tho, a quieter city from the tourist hub of the Delta region, My Tho
-I arranged the tour with my hotel. From what I can tell, this is a tour set up by a local agency with a standard price across the board. Leave in the comments if you find a similar tour of different cost.
-There are two tours you can take: a 3-hour ride or a 7-hour ride
-For the 7-hour tour, it's $38 per boat, which carried up to 3 people. I don't have the cost of the 3-hour excursion.
-You'll be picked up at your accommodation at 5:30 AM and be brought to the dock. The cost is included in your purchase.
-Bring money for lunch, beverages, anything purchased at the markets, and a tip for your driver.
-Bring water, sunscreen, and plastic bags to waterproof your valuables.
-Life vests are provided in case of an emergency.
-When you return, there will be no transportation provided back to your accommodations.

I bought a bicycle and decide to tour the local Mekong Delta. My starting point? Hong Ngu, Vietnam. A town with virtually no tourism.
I rode my bike four countless kilometers and bumped in to the border of Cambodia twice in one day - riding down two completely different rivers/channels.
I encourage anyone to do this. It was completely safe and I was greeted by so many local people!
Best Of Live Getting To Know Can Tho, Vietnam-The Mekong River Delta
Can Tho, Vietnam is the largest city in the Mekong River Delta region, famous as a destination for Mekong River Floating Market tours. It was one of the highlights of my most recent visit to Vietnam. Upon arrival in Can Tho, approximately 3.5 hours by bus from Ho Chi Minh City, I decided to immediately head for riverside, naturally where most travellers gravitate and explore the streets, night market, temples, and shops in the area. I also wanted to investigate hiring a boat for a tour the next morning. Some of my best and fondest memories of traveling are seeing a place for the first time. It's always exciting getting familiar with unknown territory. Night markets, cafes, fruit stands and Ho Chi Minh statues are not much different from one end of the country to the other but the settings are as well as the people and local culture. Throughout Vietnam you will find a mostly friendly attitude towards foreigners, from outgoing to reserved but friendly. In Can Tho and I believe much of the Mekong River Delta region locals are very hospitable. I was setting up my camera crouched on the side of a street one afternoon when behind me a friendly older man had brought out a plastic chair for me to sit on. Vietnam has a plethora of famous cities and destinations that are highly recommended by guide books and travel experts from the centers of commerce, arts, and politics like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, to the picturesque and historic cities of Hoi An and Hue. Can Tho is certainly a favorite of mine now. It doesn't have the same charming and historic atmosphere of Hoi An but it also doesn't draw excessive crowds and with the exception of the boat ladies who aggressively sell boat tours, is not hyper-focused on tourist wallets. Two or three days of hanging out in Can Tho, taking in some river excursions and visiting local temples and sites would be a wonderful diversion from the big cities and tourist towns. Tasty cheap local food, like 60 cents for a big bowl of noodles, a fantastic selection of tropical fruit, and simple street side cafes in a wonderfully laid back environment will have you contemplating retirement if not here, somewhere in Southeast Asia.
Breakfast on the MEKONG RIVER in Can Tho, Vietnam
EXPLORING THE MEKONG DELTA
I wanted to explore the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam so I visited three cities – Ben Tre, Sa Dec, and Can Tho. They all provided an interesting glimpse into life along the Mekong River, but for me, my best river experience was in Can Tho.
I rented a boat and visited Cai Rang and Phong Dien floating markets. I had hot black coffee on the boat and enjoyed a terrific breakfast of hu tieu or rice noodle soup on the river. It was one of my most memorable breakfasts in Vietnam.
We then cruised through the narrower channels of the Mekong River and visited a rice noodle factory where I got to try a deep-fried rice noodle dish with pork, egg, and salad. What a fantastic experience!
Many people only do overnight trips to Ben Tre from Saigon but if you have the time, then you may want to go deeper and explore more of the Mekong Delta region.

Wide Screen HD-Exploring Can Tho, Floating Markets, And The Mekong River Delta, Vietnam
Can Tho is the fourth largest city in Vietnam and the largest in the Mekong River Delta region. People that visit are here primarily for the boat cruises that take you to the world-famous floating markets. A confluence of boats that merge in various locations of the river for trade of mostly fresh fruit and produce. For this trip I hired a boat for about $14 dollars that will take me on an approximate 3.5 hour tour on the Hua River, a tributary of the Mekong where I’ll see a wholesale floating market in action and visit a rice paper making village. After 45 minutes of passing by colorful vessels and regular river activity, including tourist boats heading in the opposite direction on their way to other floating markets we arrived at the Cai Rang wholesale market. Cruising at a slower speed by boats almost spilling over with pineapples and other fresh fruit and produce. Local buyers arrive to purchase goods from the farmers that bring their fruit and produce to Cai Rang and take it to the cities to sell to shops and other wholesalers.
It’s important to hire a boat and leave the dock at Can Tho before 7am otherwise you’ll mostly just run in to other tour boats by the time you arrive. You can either book your boat in advance at your hotel or make a deal with one of the boat ladies hanging out at the dock on Hai Ba Trung. Typically a boat here will have a sample of whatever they’re selling attached to a long pole, so it’s easy to spot what you’re looking for from a distance on the water. This also saves the farmers or sellers from having to yell out what they’re selling like in a typical market.
You’ll also have a chance to interact with boats pulling up and offering drinks and snacks.
Can Tho was once part of the Khmer kingdom. There’s still a significant Khmer community noticable by the numerous Cambodian style Buddhist temples in the city.
If you’ve just arrived from Ho Chi Minh City you’ll appreciate a slighter slower pace with a mix of wide streets and narrow lanes. The city has enough interesting sites and places to stroll to keep you engaged for at least a few days. I found it effortless to settle in and enjoy the even friendlier environment and the inexpensive delicious food and fruit of the region.
The Khmer style temples of the region are Theraveda Buddhist unlike the Vietnamese type that are filled with Taoist Gods and Buddhist deities. A visit to Munirensay Pagoda will either immediately take you back to your days in Cambodia or inspire you to cross the border.
There are plenty of lovely restaurants along the waterfront on Hai Ba Trung as well as a nightly market with plenty of cheap food stalls but don’t miss out on the great spots on De Tham, the street of food located on Hue Vien close by the Munirensay pagoda. Here you can find a huge selection of dishes whether you favor meat, fish, or vegetarian. Plus there’s bake shops that sell slabs of cake for less than 50 cents, and fruit stalls with jackfruit that’s as sweet as candy.
There are lots of friendly streets to stroll and if you decide you want to take a rest and have a caphe da, or vietnamese iced coffee, just grab a plastic chair and have a seat. I like the fresh fruit juices cafes serve here as well.
Head back to Hai Ba Trung walk along the river’s edge, check off another Ho Chi Minh statue you’ve seen on your trip and make your way to the prettiest temple in Can Tho, Ong Temple inside the Guangzhou Assembly Hall. Under all of the huge incense coils that lends to the temples magical atmosphere you’ll find Kuang Kung or Guan Yu, right in the center. The God of war Kuang Kung symbolizes truth, justice, and courage among other qualities. Kuang Kung is the main deity worshipped at the temple.
Development and modernization is spreading across Vietnam including Can Tho but there’s still remnants from the past including the Ninh Kieu Pier Tourist Market and it’s Market Hall dating back to 1913. Inside you’ll find trinkets and clothes, souvenirs, and a restaurant/cafe with lovely river views. Meanwhile back on the floating market tour we traveled up one of the quieter pretty canals to visit a rice paper making village.
As touristy as some of this activity may seem you’d kick yourself if you didn’t hire a boat and visit a floating market while staying in Can Tho or the Mekong Delta region. The feeling of cruising up and down the river amidst this unique way of trade is an extremely rewarding adventure.
There are longer river trips and more temples and sites to see around Can Tho. However it’s the slower pace, obvious relaxed feel of the city and it’s people as well as the transcendental experience of the Mekong River system that is the bigger take away. It’s a reminder that as much as the country is changing it’s the old ways and pace of life that reflects the true beauty of Vietnam.

Cai Rang Floating Market Tour On Mekong Delta River Cruise Vietnam
To cap off our trip to Southern Vietnam we treated ourselves to a 3-day luxury river cruise in the Mekong Delta. It was the most fantastic experience, adventurous yet exciting at the same time!
Following a three hour drive from Saigon, we boarded the Mekong Eyes Explorer (the newest boat!) at Ben Tre. The first day was easy with a leisurely hike through a rural village. Day two was chock full of activity starting with an early tour of the Cai Rang Floating Market, a tour of a rice sheet and noodle factory, followed by a visit to Cho An Binh, Can Tho's largest land market, then transfer to the Mekong Eyes Classic, a traditional wood junk. In the afternoon we take a cooking class onboard and learn how to make banh khot! Day three we de-board the Classic and wrap up our trip with a sampan boat tour through a water village, tour and tea at a coconut candy factory, and a biking tour of Cai Be before getting in the bus back to Saigon.

MEKONG RIVER TOUR: Things to Do in Ben Tre, Vietnam
MEKONG RIVER TOUR IN BEN TRE
You can visit the Mekong River on a day trip from Saigon, but I wanted to spend more time in the Mekong Delta so I stayed two nights in Ben Tre.
You can explore the Mekong River on an organized tour but I wanted to go on my own, so I rented a motorboat for VND 250,000 per hour for three hours, which at the time comes out to about USD 32. We visited a brick factory and a coconut processing plant. We also rode a small canoe to explore the smaller channels of the river.
If you're traveling in a group, then I think renting a motorboat is the better option. You'll have the boat all to yourself and you can explore the Mekong River on your own time. Most people just do day trips from Ho Chi Minh City but if you have the time, then you may want to spend a night or two in Ben Tre.
