GREECE: EXPLORING the WHITE TOWER of THESSALONIKI, the most famous site ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit
The White Tower of Thessaloniki which is a monument and museum on the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki, capital of the region of Macedonia in northern Greece. The present tower replaced an old Byzantine fortification, known to have been mentioned around the 12th century, that the Ottoman Empire reconstructed to fortify the city's harbour sometime after Sultan Murad II captured Thessaloniki in 1430. The tower became a notorious prison and scene of mass executions during the period of Ottoman rule.
The White Tower was substantially remodeled and its exterior was whitewashed after Greece gained control of the city in 1912. It has been adopted as the symbol of the city.
Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. The ruins of Roman Emperor Galerius’ 4th-century palace include the Rotunda that has been both a church and a mosque. Much of the city center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Citywalk - Greece HD Travel Channel
Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Greece, is the second largest city in Greece and has always been an important transport hub. Today it is considered as an important gateway from Europe to Istanbul and to the Near East. In addition, Thessaloniki has a good reputation as a university, cultural, trade and industrial city.
In the east of the city is the exhibition ground, which is dominated by OTE TV Tower. From here, it is only a few steps to the eastern end of the promenade with the landmark of Thessaloniki, the White Tower. Built in the 15th Century, it served as defense and fortifications and later as a prison and place of execution. Today it is a museum.
An equestrian statue of Alexander the Great was erected in immediate proximity. Alexander's family originates from a Macedonian royal house. Originally described as barbarians by the classical Greeks, Alexander's father Philip II succeeded for the first time to conquer and unite Greece. However Alexander's foolhardy conquests up to the border of India integrated the Macedonians in Hellas.
Thessaloniki was founded by Cassander, a Macedonian king, and named after his wife, a half-sister of Alexander the Great.
Further east we arrive at the Dikastirion square with a monument of Eleftherios Venizelos. At one corner of the square one can visit the Ottoman Bey hamam, the largest Turkish bath of the city.
During the lunchtime, we look for a tavern at the Aristoteles square, the most beautiful square in the city and watch the people at their busy hustle and bustle. Even Aristotle seems to make his thoughts on the people.

Thessaloniki, Greece - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Thessaloniki
Top best places to visit in Thessaloniki, Greece
Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Central Macedonia.
Thessaloniki has been dubbed as The Co-Capital, a reference to its historical status as the co-reigning city of the Byzantine Empire.
Aristotelous Square is the biggest plaza and the most central point of the city and it is located on the city’s waterfront.
Picturesque promenade is spanning for about 4.5 km and, during summer, is full of Thessalonians enjoying a lively atmosphere.
From the Aristotelous Square starts the main pedestrian mall of the city, the Aristotelous Street.
It leads to ancient Roman-era ruins, which there are many in the city. The most important are:
The Roman Forum.
The Rotunda of Galerius, the oldest church of the city and one of the oldest Christian churches in the world.
The Arch of Galerius, a monumental structure built to celebrate the victory over Persians.
The Palace of Galerius, one of the most impressive constructions and the heart of the roman city.
And the city’s most famous landmark, the White Tower, nowadays a history museum.
From the top of the tower is a nice 360-degree view of the city.
Visitors in Thessaloniki have the opportunity to admire a unique architecture and well-preserved Byzantine temples, such as:
The Hagia Sophia Cathedral, the largest basilica in the city.
The Metropolitan Orthodox Church, one of the most beautiful churches consecrated to St Gregory Palamas.
And the Church of St Demetrius, the main sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki.
There are numerous other fascinating spots around town worth a visit, like:
The OTE Tower, a 76-meter-tall construction.
Located next to it the Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Archaeological Museum, that holds artifacts from prehistoric times to late antiquity.
The National Theatre, a great acting school and a dance playhouse.
And the Royal Theater, that always shows excellent dramas.
But maybe the most interesting place is the Ano Poli, the former Ottoman quarter located north of the city center.
Literally called the Upper Town houses sites which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, such as:
The Church of Hosios David.
The Vlatades Monastery, the only active priory, out of 20, in this quarter.
And the City Walls, the remains of fortifications surrounding the city from the early Byzantine period until the late 19th century.
But most people come here just for wonderful views of the city.

We then headed all the way down the hill to get one of our favourite coffee drinks a Fredo Cappuccino and then explored the main square in Thessaloniki called Aristotelous Square.
Lastly we took a walk along the beautiful waterfront until we got to one of the most recognizable structures in the city, the White Tower. Here we headed to the top to enjoy the fantastic views of the city!

Thessaloniki, the inside track
Thessaloniki, historically one of Europe’s oldest and most multiethnic cities, widely considered as the cultural capital of Greece, is truly unique in the sense that it intricately marries its thousands-year-old multicultural heritage and the architectural marvels with the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Sephardic Jew history.
With a student-strong population of 150,000, Thessaloniki boasts an under-30s do-it-yourself youth culture-creative movement seen nowhere else in the Southern part of Europe.
“Gastronomic Capital of Greece”, best party city and best mid-sized European city of the future for human capital and lifestyle, Thessaloniki has always been a no-brainer.

Germany to Greece: We found a cheap flight to Thessaloniki Greece - Things to do in Thessaloniki!
Full Vlog:
There’s always a good reason to visit Greece! Especially when your wife gives you and your friend a free weekend pass! We found a cheap flight to Thessaloniki Greece so we took advantage of Ryanair and went from Germany to Greece to explore the city with locals.
Things to do in Thessaloniki: Eat with locals! One of my favorite ways to get to know the city is to sit and eat with locals. We stayed with two lovely Greeks who ordered us a ton of local food, took us to a new night club called Whope, and gave us recommendations on where to eat for breakfast.
Our travels then took us down south in the Chalkidiki peninsula where we learned about the three fingers of Sithonia, Kassandra, and Athos. A local gave us the recommendation to visit Sardi beach which was the biggest on the Sithonia peninsula. If you're planning to visit Greece and you find yourself in Sithonia, I highly recommend staying near Sardi beach, this was the highlight of Chalkidiki!
