Explosion! Museum Of Naval Firepower Gosport (Holiday 1)
The Kaiten arrival at Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower, Gosport.
On Tuesday the 18th of October, the Museum acquired the two sections of the Kaiten Torpedo from the RN Submarine Museum at Haslar. Kaiten human torpedoes entered service with Japanese Navy as a desperate weapon of last resort during 1944-45. Six distinct types were developed, of which only the Type 1 was used in combat. 100 Type 1 Kaiten were deployed operationally; only a small number of missions were successful.
The Museum has aquired the Nose Cone and Fuel Chamber from the Type 2 version. It is hoped that the remaining sections can be acquired at a later date, or that the Museum can fabicate missing pieces. It is likely that the Kaiten will be restored by Museum volunteers in 2012 and be placed on display later next year. The Museum would like to thank Marsh Plant and the National Museum of the Royal Navy for thier assistance with transportation.

The Explosion Museum Gosport- Season 1 Episode 4
Explosion! is the Museum of Naval Firepower situated in the former Royal Naval Armaments Depot at Priddy's Hard, in Gosport, Hampshire, England. It now forms part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy.[1]
The Museum includes a wide variety of exhibits ranging from the 18th Century to the present day. These range in size from small arms, to missiles and missile launching systems, as well as complete gun turrets. Exhibits range from the Victorian RBL 20 pounder Armstrong gun through to the Second World War QF 4 inch Mk XVI naval gun. Post-war missile systems include the Exocet missile and launcher and Sea Dart missile. Modern weapons are represented in the Sea Wolf missile system and 4.5 inch Mark 8 naval gun.
The weapons cover all aspects of Naval warfare from surface to surface, air to surface, surface to air and sub-surface weapons systems, including mines and torpedoes.
The museum has a waterside coffee shop which looks out on to the original 18th-century camber dock.
Air raid on Priddy's Hard (w siren) Explosion! museum, Gosport
Re-enactors simulate an air raid during the Battle of Britain on Priddy's Hard using sound effects, pyrotechnics and a hand operated Secomak siren as part of the Spirit of the 40s event being held by the Explosion! museum (not sure what those darned Ruskies were doing in this re-enactment). Another video from this event can be found at
Priddy's Hard is a former Royal Naval Ordnance Depot in Gosport, UK, supplying the navy with guns and armaments from 1771 when the original powder magazine was built until its closure in 1988. Its proximity to Portsmouth and other military sites in the area might have been a plus point in supplying the Navy, but inevitably meant visits from the Luftwaffe for the 2,500 women who worked on the site during its peak in the Second World War. The Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower, which held this Spirit of the 40s event, opened on part of the former site in 2001.
I arrived just as this re-enactment was starting, wasn't in the best position, and in my rush made the classic mistake of videoing on my phone in portrait rather than landscape -- my apologies! (I'm full of excuses - will buy better equipment soon)

WW2 Sexton Self Propelled Gun Firing at Explosion! Gosport, UK

Britain asked Canada to develop a vehicle for its 25 pounder gun during World War 2 and over 2,150 Sextons were built by the Montreal Locomotive Works. Of these, only around 5 examples remain in the UK, and of them this is the only example that is still allowed to fire its 25 pounder field gun. This example was built in late 1943 / early 1944.
Ray Mumford fires the 3pdr. Hotchkiss at Explosion Museum, Gosport.
The Museum has participated in BBC filming for an upcoming piece on use of conkers during WW1. Conkers and timbers in general were used to extract acetone from in order to make cordite.
Students from Lockyer's Middle School in Dorset were challenged recently to collect conkers as part of an activity designed to highlight the extraction process. The students where then treated to a visit to Explosion, Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport to learn how cordite was used in munitions. The group, led by renowned war correspondent Kate Adie OBE, were treated to a tour of the galleries and even got to watch as Museum volunteer Ray Mumford fired a 3pdr. Hotchkiss gun as a special finale.
The Museum would like to thank Ray Mumford, Pauline Holloway and the Wavy Navy for their kind assistance.
Kate Adie OBE will return to the Museum on the 10th of June as part of the launch of her new book to be released later this year titled 'Fighting on the Home Front - The Legacy of Women in WW1'. Please contact the Museum on 023 9250 5600 for more information.
