Whale shark snorkel/swim on Great Barrier Reef with Eye to Eye Marine Encounters
This clip was taken by Bruce Paterson on board one of John Rumney's Far Northern research trips (Eye to Eye Marine Encounters). During the expedition our group came into contact with an aggregation of feeding whale sharks who got up close and personal with our lucky passengers and scientists.

Run for the Reef: Supporting the Minke Whale Project
In 2014 the CANEGROWERS Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival hosted an additional three Bendigo Bank Run for the Reef Community Challenges in conjunction with the Bendigo Bank’s North Queensland branches in Cairns, Atherton and Port Douglas in the lead-up to the Marathon. Funds from these three events were split between the JCU Great Barrier Reef Research Fund and local community groups nominated by the Bendigo Bank branches. These Run for the Reef Fun Runs raised just under $3000 for both the Reef Research program and local community groups.
The annual marathon festival in Port Douglas also donated $20 from each registration in the 74km, 42km and 21km races as well as calling on participants to help raise funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. The total funds raised by the Run for the Reef initiative was is $15,135.25.
The decision has now been made by the Board of the JCU Great Barrier Reef Research Fund to support the Minke Whale Project with these funds.
Dwarf Minke whales visit the northern Great Barrier Reef each winter, forming the only known migration of these whales in the world. Growing up to eight metres and weighing several tonnes, they are exceptionally inquisitive creatures often approaching boats, divers and snorkelers.
For 20 years the Minke Whale Project has conducted research to improve our understanding of these whales and contributed to the sustainable management of the multi-million dollar swim-with-whales ecotourism industry that has developed on dive vessels from Cairns and Port Douglas (e.g. Eye to Eye Marine Encounters).
Research by the MWP has so far included:
• Population studies using photo-identification
• Behavioural studies of interacting whales
• Potential impacts, risks and sustainable tourism management
• Social and economic values of the whales
• And our recent satellite-tracking program provided the first hard evidence to one of the great mysteries of the world’s oceans – where they go after leaving the Great Barrier Reef.
The Run for the Reef program is an initiative by the CANEGROWERS Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival to help preserve our greatest natural wonder for generations to come. The CANEGROWERS Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival is on again this year on November 1st in Port Douglas, with four Run for the Reef events in the lead up to be held in Townsville, Airlie Beach, Cairns and Port Douglas.
Swimming with Dwarf minke whales on the Great Barrier Reef
Each year Eye to Eye Marine Encounters offers expeditions to swim with dwarf minke whales on the Great Barrier Reef. John Rumney and his dedicated team of researchers and crew have been running these trips for 15 years and pioneered the swim with whale experience in Queensland. They were also instrumental in the development a Code of Practice which ensures all encounters are carried out on the whales terms.

Minke Whale & Calf - Silversonic
Minke whale adults and a baby (calf) were spotted by passengers and crew aboard Silversonic dive and snorkel. Minke whales are frequently seen on the outer reefs of the Great Barrier Reef between the months of March and October.
Swimming with Dwarf Minke Whales in Australia
We were lucky to swim with Dwarf Minke Whales on a snorkeling day trip with Silversonic to the Agincourt Reef at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The dwarf minke whales have been very curious and circled around us over and over again. Even a reef shark showed up to investigate what all the commotion is about. Silversonic is one of the few companies with a permit allowing people to get into the water and swim with Minke Whales if they decide to show up.
Between 60 and 80 dwarf minke whales show up once a year for a few short weeks off the Queensland northern coast to mate and calve. This is the only place in the world with the ability to swim and snorkel with dwarf minke whales.
Snorkeling up close with dwarf minke whales made our list of top wildlife encounters.

The passenger ship SS Yongala sank off Cape Bowling Green, Queensland, Australia on 23 March 1911. En route from Melbourne to Cairns she steamed into a cyclone and sank south of Townsville.
All one hundred and twenty-two people on board perished in what is considered one of the most tragic incidents in Australian maritime history. It was only in 1958 that the wreck of the Yongala was discovered lying in waters south of Townsville, and it has since become renowned as an internationally regarded diving and tourist destination.
The guitarfish are a family, Rhinobatidae, of rays. The guitarfish are known for an elongated body with a flattened head and trunk and small ray like wings. The combined range of the various species is tropical, subtropical and temperate waters worldwide. They often travel in large schools.
The Hydrophiinae, also known as coral reef snakes or sea snakes, are a subfamily of venomous elapid snakes that inhabit marine environments for most or all of their lives. Though they evolved from terrestrial ancestors, most are extensively adapted to a fully aquatic life and are unable to move on land, except for the genus Laticauda, which retain ancestral characteristics, allowing limited land movement. They are found in warm coastal waters from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific.

Friendly Girl Turtle Still OK Snorkeling Australia

We know more and more trespassing is occurring at Turtle Bay; lengths of fishing line, rubbish, fish looking for handouts, fish disappearing and turtles becoming more and more shy. So it was with relief we came across Friendly Girl the Green Turtle on this day still ok !

We believe the best snorkeling in the world is a coral reef adventure on a Great Barrier Reef snorkeling trip with Wavelength Marine Charters because coral reefs on the great barrier reef australia are perfect for snorkeling rather than scuba diving due to their shallow nature with most life in the first few metres. Great barrier reef diving is more for the scuba diving experience rather than seeing coral reefs and fish. Unlike snorkeling in hawaii or snorkeling in cozumel or snorkeling in bahamas or snorkeling in sharm el sheikh, expert snorkeling tips and snorkeling how to information is given on the boat. Snorkelling great barrier reef not from crowded Cairns but from Port Douglas is the best snorkeling with sharks, snorkeling with dolphins, snorkeling with turtles and snorkeling with stingrays. Unlike the high impact Agincourt reefs, Opal Reef is like snorkelling in a coral reef aquarium.
