Diving the Caigs @ St Abbs and Eyemouth Marine reserve
4/08/2016 Dive 1 at the Caigs. Its just below St Abbs lighthouse. I've dived here before when the water was clearer and the sun was out and what a difference a day makes. There was a strong surge at the bottom nearer the cliffs .I avoided the swim through so as not to get spat out the other side. Lots of fish sightings . they were all in small schools hiding in the lee of large rocks or in sheltered gulleys.
And to finish a Sun Star on the move hunting Brittle stars.

SCUBA Diving in Scotland, St Abbs Marine Reserve, March 2016
People often ask me why I prefer diving in the UK compared to overseas, hopefully this short video provides some answers. Admittedly it is a little colder and the weather can be a little unpredictable but when this kind of diving is on your doorstep who can complain?

Salvage of a 270 tonne Fishing Vessel, Dartmouth
The Island’s Diving and Salvage company MMC Diving Services have just completed the salvage of a 270 tonne French fishing vessel Saint Christophe 1 which sank while alongside in the beautiful River Dart in Dartmouth.
Working very closely with Multraship and Adler and Allan, MMC had a highly qualified 12 man strong team which included, cross trained access engineers, confined space and high ropes specialists, along with a commercial diving and rigging team.
The Saint Christophe 1 originally from France was granted access in to Dartmouth Harbour to seek refuge from the gale force 10 winds and rough seas in the English Channel. The vessel moored up on the seawall and touched bottom on the ebb tide, it then listed over to port and flooded. Saint Christophe 1 sank on 10th March 2016 due to lack of buoyancy. The vessel rested firmly on the seabed approximately 4m away from the quay wall, at approximate position: 50° 20’ 58.59 N, 03° 34’ 37.48 W.
At the time of sinking the Saint Christophe had 10 tonnes of fuel on board, 0.5 tonnes of lube oil and was laden with 2 tonne of cargo (fish) and 10 tonne of fishing equipment.
The hull is a composite design with polyester-resin construction, so strength considerations had to be taken in to account when forming a salvage plan. There was also a high possibility that the hull had been compromised on the starboard side after having been in contact with the seabed for several weeks.
MMC’s Divers penetrated the engine room and shut off all fuel valves on the tanks to prevent fuel leaks, and after filling the fuel tank air vents with underwater expanding foam undertook a full detailed structural survey.
Adler and Allen deployed booms around the vessel for environmental protection and maintained oil response 24/7 up until the time the vessel was recovered.
The currents were typically flowing at 1-1.5 knots, and 24 hour operations were permitted due to the degree of urgency in removing the vessel from her position.
Company director Sam Connelly stated “to be narrowed down to the last two salvage companies, whilst up against global salvage giants as well as 14 other accomplished salvage and wreck removal companies, was a huge achievement for MMC Diving Services and reflects the excellent reputation that MMC has established for professional and competitive diving services in the UK”.

Barry the Rescued Grey Seal released back into the wild..
This December the team at Blue Reef Aquarium’s Seal Rescue centre have been very busy looking after sick and injured seal pups. With a record amount of grey seal pups been born, many have run into trouble and needed some attention.
Early this month, British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) picked up a young seal pup in Whitley Bay, who was suffering from an abscess and unable to look after himself. Due to his pink markings, the seal could be traced back to the Farne Islands, some 40 miles away!
The seal, who has been named Barry, still had his juvenile white fur, with the team placing him at around 3 weeks old. At that young age, he should still be with his mother and was unable to feed for himself; it was a miracle that he survived the trip from the Farne Islands!
He has been at the rescue centre for a few weeks now and has been making amazing progress. The staff and volunteers have got him used to being in the water and feeding for himself. After some feeding and treatment he is now ready for life in the wild.
Terry McKeone, Head of Seal Rescue at Blue Reef Tynemouth said “Barry was so fortunate to survive the long trip from the Farne Islands at such a young age.
“He has responded well to his treatment and learned how to fend for himself, which will be important in the wild.”
Barry was released back into the North Sea this week by the Blue Reef Team and volunteers from BDMLR. He was a little disorientated, but after a little while, he found his way back into the sea. It is hoped that he will join up with a local colony of Grey Seals in time for Christmas.
Grey seals like Barry and their close relatives, harbour seals are both commonly seen in the North Sea, but increasing numbers need the help of rescue centres such as the one at Blue Reef Tynemouth.
The Marine Rescue Centre is currently at capacity, with five seals, needing treatment. Visitors to Blue Reef Tynemouth can see these rescue seals and learn what to do if they see a seal in need of car.

RNLB LIFETIME CARE lifeboat Belfast
Spotted down in the Abercorn Basin Marina behind the Odyssey at Belfast. The Lifetime Care is a relief lifeboat. In 1989 12-11 Lifetime Care was built with a fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) hull.
This boat is one of a Mersey class of lifeboats. They are all-weather lifeboats operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) from stations around the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. They are capable of operating at up to 17 knots (31 km/h) and can be launched from a carriage. The class name comes from the River Mersey which flows into the Irish Sea in north west England
