Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife C.P.P.M.U
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, responsible for effective management and sustainable use of KwaZulu Natal's biodiversity, stands out as on of the forerunners in partnering with local communities. Taking cognisance of the fact that conservation and sustainable use of natural resources - both inside and outside the protected areas -- thrives only with the support of the communities living adjacent to these reserves, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife embarked on a Social Responsibility Program in 1999 that has attracted world-wide acclaim.
One of the key focuses of the Social Responsibility Program is the creation of temporary employment and skills development opportunities for unemployed people, through the implementation of labour intensive projects. A shining example of such a project comes in the form the Invasive Alien Species Program which, in the 2009 to 2010 financial year alone, employed over 2000 community members surrounding 55 of Ezemvelo's protected areas. Of the 492 664 hectares targeted, 290 548 hectares are infested with invasive alien plants. In this period, the program treated 116,927 hectares of this infestation, equating to 40% of all infestations being dealt with.

Living Land - Episode 19
Living Land spends time at Ezemvelo Nature Reserve with students learning valuable lessons about sustainability in nature, and we visit the South African Weather Service to find out more about climate change. Our journey to the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve near Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng takes us to the Maharishi Institute which runs youth-focused educational programmes at Ezemvelo with the aim of encouraging an interest in nature and conservation. The eco-village at Ezemvelo provides the latest knowledge, technologies and methods to preserve nature, slow down the effects of climate change and transform the status quo of rural poverty. They have introduced a bio-digester which is used to generate electricity in a safe and efficient way. We learn how these students are being equipped to alleviate poverty and create wealth in their home communities. Continuing our quest to find out more about climate change, we interview Puseletso Mofokeng from the South African Weather Service.
