EZHIMALA BEACH PAYYANUR
The sea curves around three sides of the seven peaked Ezhimala hills. Ezhimala beach is artistically set by nature at the foot steps of those hills.
Just adding spice to splendour, sea here is truly blue and the sands are of a different texture.
Hills appear painted green with dense bushes amidst scattered coconut palms.
Intrigue permeates the hill slopes where carved stone pillars are seen scattered around. It gets even intense at the bottom where a cave and an ancient burial chamber suddenly appear before eyes.
There is also an old mosque on top of the hill that attracts many visitors.
Hill top bushes are home to medicinal herbs that are hard to find elsewhere. Ezhimala hills are renowned for them.
Dolphins are usually spotted at the nearby Ettikulam Bay. So it has become a favorite spot of Dolphin enthusiasts.
For those who are looking for an isolated place abundant in natural beauty, Ezhimala beach Kerala delivers that in droves.

Hanuman Biggest statue in south India and Ittikkulalm beach | Kannur Kerala
The Anjaneya statue and temple is about 215 meters above the sea on the on the eastern part of Ezhimala hills (a hill reaching a height of 286 metres), in the Ezhimala village of Ramanthali panchayat near Payyanur in Kannur district. Ezhimala was one of the major battlefields of the Chola-Chera war of the 11th century.
From either way you have to climb the top road. The top road is almost equidistant (about 5 kms ) from the Kannur Gate or the Ramanthalli Gate. From both ends there is about two hair pin curves. There are two view points on the way from both ends and you can view a vast area from Cheruvattur to Kannur beach including the Madayipara, and Arabian Sea. The view from here is spectacular and mind blowing. The scenic beauty as you reach the top of the hill is worth the effort. Above this, the sight of the statue of Hanuman swamy adds joy in our hearts.
The statue stands against the wind from the Arabian sea. It reflects Hanuman’s potential to face any adverse situation. The face of Hanuman is calm and composed. According to myths, the faces of those holding inherent powers are always calm.
You can reach here either from Payyanur or from Ezhimala, Ettikulam, Ezhilode or Payangadi. From payyanur it takes a drive of about 30 minutes and even though the first half of the drive is easy the second half is a bit tedious.
The Hanuman Statue installed by Sunson Herbal Products and Surya Trust, Payyanur, in rememberance of U Surendra Shenoy,(founder of Surya ayurvedics Payyanur).
The statue sculpted out of concrete and cement is the creation of an amateur architect and artiste, K K R Vengara who works as a teacher near Ezhimala. Swami Gopalji, a saint who had been running an ashram here, who mooted the idea to erect a statue of Hanuman at the peak of Ezhimala here, which is 800 feet above sea level. It was at his instance that the work of the statue was started in 2002.Vengara said. As the Swamy left the scene, the project was taken over by the local Soorya Trust.
Ezhimala, a hill reaching a height of 286 metres, is located near Payyanur, in Kannur district of Kerala, south India. It is a part of a conspicuous and isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory, 38 km north of Kannur (Cannanore) .
As the former capital of the ancient Mushika Kingdom, Ezhimala is considered to be an important historical site. A flourishing seaport and center of trade around the beginning of the Common Era, it was also one of the major battlefields of the Chola-Chera Wars, in the 11th century. It is believed by some that Lord Buddha had visited Ezhimala.
Th hills is also known as Elimala, Mooshika Sailam and Sapta Sailam.
The hill had been named Monte d'Ely by the Portuguese.[1] and was known as Mount Delly or Mount Eli to the British.
Ezhimala, which is part of Ramanthali panchayath, is one of the most important places in the recorded history of north Malabar. From before the period of known history, some chapters of the Ramayana and local Hindu legends associate the Ezhimala Hills with the famous epic, in particular with lord Hanuman.
Ezhimala, Pazhayangadi, and several villages and towns in this region find plenty of mention in the extant Tamil Sangam Period's literature (500 BC to 300 AD). Pazhayangadi is the present corrupted form of its ancient name of Pazhi. Pazhi is mentioned as the ancient capital of King Udayan Venmon Nannan (known as Nannan or Nandan) of the Mushika or Kolathiri Royal Family. Though the Dynasty of Nannans was a cousin or sister dynasty of the Cheras and Pandyas and Cholas, warfare among them was nearly consistent, and the period of Nannan was no exception.[4][5][6][7] There are texts that speak of Nannan fighting heroic battles at Pazhi against the Chera Kings who invaded his kingdom (Kolathunadu). Eventually, Nannan was killed in battle by the Chera king, Narmudi Cheral. Like the other kings of the then Tamilakam cultural polity, Narmudi Cheral was a great patron of scholars and poets, and he once gifted his court-poet, Kappiyattu Kappiyanar with 40 lakhs gold coins, as a token of his poetic genius.
Extant Tamil Sangam texts describe the glory and wealth of the ancient Pazhi in the highest terms.[8] Sangam Era poets, as well as Classical Tamil poets of later centuries, like Paranar speak of the wealth of Pazhi in the greatest degree. One of the Sangam pieces, Akam 173 speaks of Nannan's great mountain slopes where gold fields abound, and long bamboos dried in the Sun burst and released the unfinished pearls.[8] Noted scholar, Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai states that It is from Kottayam (of North Malabar) and Cannanore regions of old Ezhimalainad that innumerable Roman (gold) coins have been excavated. On one (single) occasion (gold) coins that could be carried by six porters were obtained. These coins were found to belong to the period down to 491 AD.[8]
