Coronavirus: Wuhan - at least 100,000 infections in one city
Fifteen new deaths were reported in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.
Fifteen more people have died in the city of Wuhan, the Hubei provincial capital and epicenter of the outbreak, the health authorities in Hubei said.
The new figures, announced early Saturday, represented a nearly 60 percent jump from the previous death toll of 26.
Just three of the 41 deaths reported over all have taken place outside of Wuhan: one in another city in Hubei Province, one in Hebei Province, and one in Heilongjiang, near the Russian border.
The new victims ranged from 55 to 87 years old. Eleven were male, and four female.
Nationwide, more than 400 new cases of the virus were diagnosed, officials said early Saturday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in China to nearly 1,300.
Wuhan Coronavirus Map: Tracking the Spread of the Outbreak
The virus has sickened more than 1,300 people in China and a handful in other countries.
China restricts travel for 35 million people as the death toll rises.
The authorities on Friday greatly expanded a travel lockdown in central China to include 12 cities near the center of the outbreak, effectively penning in 35 million residents — nearly the population of Canada — in an effort to contain the dangerous coronavirus.
The new travel limits — abruptly decreed ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, China’s busiest travel season — were an extraordinary step that underlined the governing Communist Party’s deepening fears about the outbreak of a little-understood coronavirus.
Just one day after China restricted travel in and from the center of the outbreak, Wuhan, a city of 11 million and the capital of Hubei Province, and four nearby towns, the government announced plans to suspend public transportation services covering more than half the population of the province.
The rapidly expanding outbreak has overwhelmed the Chinese province’s hospitals and fueled fears of a global pandemic.
All the deaths reported so far have been in China. Most have been older patients, but included a 36-year-old man.
On Thursday morning, the authorities imposed a travel lockdown in Wuhan, and airlines canceled hundreds of flights to the city, leaving thousands of people stranded.
Later in the day, officials said they would also halt public transportation in the nearby cities of Huanggang, Ezhou, Zhijiang and Chibi, which are together home to more than nine million residents. By Friday, restrictions had been announced in eight other cities.

Similar cancellations were announced in cities including Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, Hohhot in Inner Mongolia and Wuhan, the center of the outbreak.
The Shanghai Disney Resort said it will allow guests to reschedule or receive refunds for entry tickets as well as hotel bookings. Guests can choose to change their bookings to any other day within the next six months or get their money back, the theme park said Thursday. Luxury hotel chain InterContinental Hotels Group Plc said guests can change or cancel reservations across the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

A second Chinese city will go into lockdown in an effort to control the spread of a new virus which has left 17 dead in the country.
Authorities have suspended planes and trains in and out of Wuhan - a city of 11 million people - as well as all public transport within the city.
Similar measures will take effect in nearby Huanggang, a city of more than seven million, as of midnight.
There are more than 500 confirmed cases of the virus, which has spread abroad.
Countries around the world have announced they will be screening travellers for signs of infection.
Wuhan is at the centre of the outbreak and believed to be where the virus originated.
Residents have been told not to leave. Worried about a food shortage, one Wuhan resident said it felt like the end of the world.
The lockdown comes as millions of Chinese people travel across the country for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
All outbound flights from Wuhan have been suspended as of Thursday. Several regional airlines - including Malaysia's AirAsia and Singapore Airlines' budget carrier Scoot - have announced a temporary halt to flights to and from Wuhan.
Another Wuhan resident said on social media site Weibo that they were on the verge of tears when they heard about the closures.
What's the latest?
The public transport lockdown came into force as of 10:00 local time (02:00 GMT), leaving normally busy train stations and airports empty.
Supermarket shelves were reportedly bare as residents scrambled for supplies, while people took to social media to complain about soaring prices for groceries.
Residents had already been told to avoid crowds and minimise public gatherings, and health authorities have reportedly made wearing a mask in public places mandatory.
State news agency Xinhua said tourist attractions and hotels had been told to suspend large-scale activities while libraries, museums and theatres were cancelling exhibitions and performances.
And the lockdown is spreading. Public television in Huanggang - east of Wuhan - has also announced a suspension of its bus and rail system from midnight, and encouraged people not to leave the city. Cafes and cinemas will also be shut.
On Thursday, China's National Health Commission released details of the 17 victims. The youngest victim was 48 and the oldest was 89. Most of them were elderly and suffered from other chronic diseases including Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
All the fatalities so far have been in Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital.
A doctor at a hospital in Wuhan spoke to the BBC
The virus is now spreading at an alarming rate. The hospitals have been flooding with thousands of patients, who wait hours to see a doctor - you can imagine their panic.
Normally Wuhan is a great place to live and we are proud of our work - specialists here have developed a guide for coronavirus diagnosis and treatment.
But I am scared because this is a new virus and the figures are worrying.
Two days ago we were told not to go to work because of the risk of contamination. If we leave our home on the hospital campus, we are required to wear masks.
We don't want to take our two-year-old son outside. He's sleeping now, and we are trying to protect him as much as possible - hand-washing, airing the apartment, avoiding contact with people.
Outside I can barely see anyone on the streets. We have been told to avoid gathering.
I went to the supermarket to buy food, but there was nothing left - no vegetables or biscuits. Some Lunar New Year celebrations are cancelled.
People had bought tickets to go home for Lunar New Year but they can't go now. Everyone is stuck here and can't leave.
What do we know about the virus?
Currently known as 2019-nCoV, the virus is understood to be a new strain of coronavirus not previously identified in humans. The Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus that killed nearly 800 people globally in the early 2000s was also a coronavirus, as is the common cold.
This new virus originated in a seafood market in Wuhan that conducted illegal transactions of wild animals, authorities have said. The market has been shut down since the beginning of the year.
Some researchers have suggested the illness may have originated in snakes. A study published on Wednesday in the Journal of Medical Virology said genetic analysis suggests snakes are the most probable wildlife animal reservoir for the virus but this would need to be confirmed by other studies. Other researchers have questioned the claim.
There is also evidence of human-to-human transmission with the virus having spread from patients to family members and healthcare workers.
But understanding more about how the virus transmits between people is one of the major outstanding questions in this outbreak.
The virus infects the lungs and symptoms start with a fever and cough. It can progress to shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The potentially deadly virus Coronavirus
originating from the fish market in Wuhan China, where live animals transfer it to humans, then humans to humans transfers. Wuhan with a population of 11 million has now seen the virus take 41 lives with 1300 effected. Fortunately there are no cases in Africa. The city Wuhan is #11 in population in China and a major industrial and manufacturing center. Wuhan along with the Chinese cities of Huangganf and Ezhou 45 miles away, another 7 million people have also lost their public transportation through a lock-down of subway systems, roads, highways, trains, buses and planes. People wondered what China's intentions were in Africa, with a population of 1 million there, have had good reasons in the past especially with Chinese racism in Wuhan. So hold on to your crocodile tears for Wuhan. “This is Africa” (这就是非洲) is the name of an exhibition in the capital of China’s Hubei province, Wuhan, that was pulled down recently after complaints by Africans in China. The exhibit showcased pictures of Africans [compared with images of animals africans-in-china-are-infuriated-over-a-museum-exhibit-comparing-africans-to-animals) native to Africa. Africa needs to screen Chinese for the virus coming from those three cities; it needs to invest in large quantities of mask, bio hazard suits, set up bio containment units and temporarily leave China. The World Health Organizations Executive Director and Director General are trying to determine if this is a World Public Health Emergency. Before ordering your next Chinese dinner, lets wait to see what the research shows.

Coronavirus: Wuhan NOT in lockdown
Since December, health authorities in China have been grappling with an outbreak of viral pneumonia that has sickened hundreds of people and killed 17.
The disease is thought to be caused by a previously unknown type of coronavirus that may have first spread to humans from animals at a now-shuttered seafood market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where most of the cases have been diagnosed. Further cases have been confirmed in Thailand, Japan, South Korea and the U.S. while suspected cases have also occurred in a number of other countries and territories.
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause a variety of ailments, among them the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Most known coronaviruses cause relatively mild cold-like symptoms, but their ability to jump between humans and animals makes them hard to contain. Chinese health officials have confirmed that the new virus can spread between people, but do not believe it to be as serious as SARS or MERS.

Wuhan Did not shut down Airport
China expands lockdowns to include 6 cities in bid to stop coronavirus
The Associated Press · Posted: Jan 23, 2020 4:01 AM ET | Last Updated: 9 hours ago
China broadened its unprecedented, open-ended lockdowns to encompass more than 20.5 million people Friday to try to contain a deadly new virus that has sickened hundreds, even though the measures' potential for success is uncertain.
At least six cities have been shut down, Wuhan, Ezhou, Huanggang, Chibi, Qianjiang and Xiantao, all in central China's Hubei province, where the illness has been concentrated.
In Wuhan, where the lockdown began early Thursday, normally bustling streets, malls and other public spaces were eerily quiet. Masks were mandatory in public. The train station and airport were closed, and ferry, subway and bus service was halted; police checked all incoming vehicles but did not close off the roads.
The five other cities under lockdown as of Friday morning are near Wuhan, but authorities were taking precautions around the country. In the capital, Beijing, major public events were cancelled indefinitely, including traditional temple fairs that are a staple of Lunar New Year celebrations. The Forbidden City, the palace complex in Beijing that is now a museum, announced it will close indefinitely on Saturday.
The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus rose to 830 with 25 deaths, the National Health Commission said Friday morning. The first death was also confirmed outside Hubei. The health commission in Hebei, a northern province bordering Beijing, said an 80-year-old man died after returning from a two-month stay in Wuhan to see relatives.
The vast majority of cases have been in and around Wuhan or people with connections the city. Outside the mainland, cases have been confirmed in Hong Kong, Macao, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.

Many countries are screening travellers from China for symptoms of the virus, which can cause fever, coughing, breathing difficulties and pneumonia.
The World Health Organization decided against declaring the outbreak a global emergency for now. The declaration can increase resources to fight a threat but that can also cause trade and travel restrictions and other economic damage, making the decision politically fraught.
The decision should not be taken as a sign that WHO does not think the situation is serious or that we're not taking it seriously. Nothing could be further from the truth, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. WHO is following this outbreak every minute of every day.
CBC EXPLAINSWhat we know (and don't know) about the new coronavirus outbreak
Chinese officials have not said how long the shutdowns of the cities will last. While sweeping measures are typical of China's Communist Party-led government, large-scale quarantines are rare around the world, even in deadly epidemics, because of concerns about infringing on people's liberties. And the effectiveness of such measures is unclear.
To my knowledge, trying to contain a city of 11 million people is new to science, said Gauden Galea, the WHOs representative in China, referring to Wuhan. It has not been tried before as a public health measure. We cannot at this stage say it will or it will not work.
Jonathan Ball, a professor of virology at molecular virology at the University of Nottingham in Britain, said the lockdowns appear to be justified scientifically.
Until there's a better understanding of what the situation is, I think it's not an unreasonable thing to do, he said. Anything that limits people's travels during an outbreak would obviously work.

Hailstorm Hit Central China's Hubei Province
A hailstorm hit northwest cities in central China’s Hubei Province on Wednesday, affecting local traffic and causing damages to farmlands.
The hailstorm arrived at 16:00 and lasted for about 10 minutes. Video footage taken by some residents showed that the hailstorm strongly blow motorbikes down to one side. The hailstorm also broke some trees and caused ponds on land.

Torrential Rain Creates Severe Flooding in China’s Hubei Province
Firefighters evacuated trapped residents from torrential rain that hit Xiangyang city in China’s Hubei Province this Friday. Many roads and streets were also severely flooded making it hard for civilians to travel around the city.
Within two hours the depth of the flood had reached 80 millimeters. Many sections of roads were flooded, especially areas around culverts where the depth of the water reached 150 centimeters.
The exhaust pipe of our car was completely submerged, so our car wouldn’t start. We had to call the emergency services, said a Xiangyang resident.
There are about six or seven cars trapped near the traffic light. The traffic light is out of power, and the cars cannot move, said another resident.
Local firefighters scrambled to save the trapped victims and free stranded vehicles. Later, the firefighting services set up multiple drainage systems to help drain away the excess water.
