MY FACE WAS ON THE GAMBIA DALASIS BEFORE JAMMEH’S FACE
Why is the Gambia a hotspot for sex tourism?
The Gambia is a popular destination for sex tourism. Sex tourism attracts western tourists — primarily women — who are eager to have sex with younger men. Prostitution is illegal in The Gambia, but poverty often leads many young men and women to try and make a living as so-called bumsters. But how high is the price for a better life? DW's Edith Kimani went to The Gambia to meet with some of the young people working in the sector.

Teach Gambia - Changing the Face of Volunteering
Teach Gambia are changing the face of volunteering.
We provide an option to volunteer and tour Africa which is totally free from myths, tourist bubbles, exploitation and sub par experiences.
Our 3 week Summer 2019 programs give volunteers the chance to teach local children under the close guidance of local teachers, using teaching programs put together and co-ordinated at ground level by experienced UK teachers.
Because we work within local communities, we are able to offer some of the most exclusive wildlife experiences out there! Walk with lions, wrestle with pythons, sail with hippos, help rehabilitate chimpanzees and sail with hippos - this is the stuff the tourists do not have access to.
Teach Gambia also run a school and university talks program, helping to arm young people with the information they need to make the right choice when looking for a volunteering program.
Contact us via our website to find out more about booking places on our programs, to inquire about our school and university talks, or simply to seek advice you can trust about the 'voluntourism' industry.
Join us in our quest to change the face of volunteering forever.

The Gambia In Depth by Lala The Poet
Gambia: The people who stood up to Yahya Jammeh - Talk to Al Jazeera
On January 21 2017, Yahya Jammeh boarded a plane at Banjul's international airport and left the country he had ruled for 22 years.
Jammeh had refused to accept defeat in the Gambian presidential elections the month before. West African heads of state set off on a month-long marathon negotiation, taking turns to get Jammeh to accept the results. Eventually, they gave him an ultimatum: step down or 7,000 soldiers from the region step in to take back control of the country.
On January 19, foreign troops marched in as the country's elected leader, Adama Barrow, was sworn in.
Jammeh took power in a bloodless coup in 1994, when he was a 29-year-old lieutenant.
We have no plans to stay long. What we are here for is to set a just system and to put up structures so that what happened in the past 13 years will never happen again, he said at the time.
But soon, Jammeh had swapped his army uniform for a white traditional robe and adopted a more authoritarian tone.
He ruled the country with an iron fist - imprisoning critics and political opponents. Human rights organisations accused him and his security forces of torture and enforced disappearances.
We talk to the men and women who helped bring Yahya Jammeh's 22-year rule to an end.

The Gambia's tourism sector feels pressure after Thomas Cook collapse | AFP
As The Gambia's tourist season begins, hotel owners are still trying to 'cut down on losses' after the bankruptcy of British tour operator Thomas Cook on 23 September 2019. The British holidaymaker was one of the largest tourist outfitters in the small West African country, with 45% of tourists entering The Gambia through Thomas Cook according to The Gambia's government. Two emergency meetings have been organised by the government to find an emergency solution before the country's touristic season begins in November. from hotel owners in Banjul
