Crete Video Map:
Phaistos, or more correctly the Minoan Palace of Phaistos is located in south-central Crete, on Messara Plain, 55 km south of Heraklion. The Minoan palace of Phaistos corresponds to a thriving city developed very deliberately in the fertile plain of Messara in prehistoric times, ie from 6,000 BC about until the first century BC, as attested to by the archaeological findings there.

Archaeological sites and museums---
There is a large number of archaeological sites which include the Minoan sites of Knossos, Malia,, Petras, and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys,
Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own poetry and music). It was once the centre of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe.[
The Minoan civilization was an Aegean Bronze Age civilization on the island of Crete and other Aegean islands.
The term Minoan, which refers to the mythical King Minos, originally described the pottery of the period. Minos was associated in Greek mythology with the labyrinth and the Minotaur, which Evans identified with the site at Knossos (the largest Minoan site). According to Homer, Crete once had 90 cities.
Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and has been called Europe's oldest city
The name Knossos survives from ancient Greek references to the major city of Crete. The identification of Knossos with the Bronze Age site is supported by tradition and by the Roman coins that were scattered over the fields surrounding the pre-excavation site, then a large mound named Kephala Hill, elevation 85 m (279 ft) from current sea level. Many of them were inscribed with Knosion or Knos on the obverse and an image of a Minotaur or Labyrinth on the reverse, both symbols deriving from the myth of King Minos, supposed to have reigned from Knossos.[
The excavations in Knossos began in AD 1900 by the English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans (1851–1941) and his team, and they continued for 35 years. The palace was excavated and partially restored under the direction of Arthur Evans in the earliest years of the 20th century.
The palace of Knossos was undoubtedly the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture. It appears as a maze of workrooms, living spaces, and storerooms close to a central square
According to Greek Mythology, The Psychro cave at Mount Dikti was the birthplace of the god Zeus.
