Failaka Island, Kuwait
Failaka Island is an island that belongs to Kuwait.. The island is 20 km off the coast of Kuwait City in the Persian Gulf. The name 'Failaka' is thought to be derived from the ancient Greek fylakio it means outpost.
Prior to the Iraqi Invasion, the island had over two thousand residents and several schools. The village of Az Zawr is situated near the middle of the northwest side of the island. It was the longest continuously inhabited location in Kuwait. During 1990 and 1991, the invading Iraqis depopulated the island, expelling all of its residents to the mainland. The Iraqi military mined the beaches and used the island's facilities and buildings for target practice. In 1991.

TRAVEL VLOG | Kuwait #13 - Failaka Island جزيرة فيلكا
A day tour to Failaka Island (جزيرة فيلكا). After three years of living in Kuwait, I've finally reached this destination. Despite being an almost desolate place, Failaka Island (جزيرة فيلكا) features a weird, yet interesting, mixture of things to see and do.

Family Trip || Failaka Island || Kuwait ???????? #جزيره #فليكا #الكويت#
#Salmiya To failaka island#
Failaka was a welcome if somewhat bizarre part of what would have been an otherwise boring weekend in Kuwait. Firstly no-one in the hotels seemed to know about the place, and then anyone who did urged me not to go. Purchasing the tickets was quite funny, I walked all the way along the waterfront to the kptc office...which looked derelict and empty...to my surprise there was a man in the corner and sold me the tickets for 2.5 KD each way for the following morning at 10am. Get there a bit early maybe 15 mins max. Ferry journey itself isn’t nice, squashed in and no real shade so best to sit on the lower deck part and come prepared with juice/snacks etc. the island-I could talk a lot about it but the highlight was walking for literally hours alone without seeing anyone through entire bombed out villages and mosques...schools...it was eerie and a dream for any photographer. I stumbled here most accidentally by walking straight past the ‘zoo’ and ‘lake/hotel resort’ which is about 15mins from the ferry on a straight road, and wandering to the right into the abandoned houses. ask for directions when getting off. The school is on the left hand side when takin this route but before reaching the ‘resort’. The village/resort place seems quite nice actually and food and drink can be purchased here and possibly rental scooters. The tank graveyard is far away and only really accessible by the tour which this hotel runs, unfortunately this ‘tour’ is only a 2 minute stop when driving you back to the ferry for 2 is but still very much worth seeing. I didn’t get to see anything historical but as far as abandoned buildings, shot up cars and empty if somewhat dirty beaches I saw many. There’s not much to do in Kuwait so this was a highlight.

Failaka Island trip with Sanchari Kuwait in 2017
Kuwait is not a typical tourist destination, which is the reason why one of its treasures, Failaka Island, is little known. About 20 km off the mainland, the small island can be reached by speedboot or public ferry and is particularly popular with locals during spring months, due to its milder climate and rich vegetation. Excavations on the island since the 1950s revealed a long history of population: starting with the Sumerians around 5000 years ago, artifacts and buildings from ancient Greek, Babylonians, Nestorian Christians, Islamic populations to Portugese fortifications have been unearthed. Unfortunately most of the treasures remaining on the island itself have been vandalised during the first Gulf war, but some exceptional pieces can still be viewed in the National Museum on the mainland. Large scale devastation from the war still remains and only a small fraction of the population has since returned. The old town is only partly rebuild, but a local museum and a hotel have opened up to visitors and the archaeologists came back to more discoveries. Permission to visit the excavations can be requested via the National Museum on the mainland, and boats to the island leave daily at different times, depending on the tide.
Overall, the island offers a welcome break from the huzzle and buzzle of Kuwait City during winter and spring.
Failaka Island, Kuwait: Remnants of War
Footage of Failaka Island from the short film TO REST IN PEACE, set against the song Salamun Salam, which is nominated at the 2010 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
For 20 years after the Gulf War, the Island of Failaka was abandoned. TO REST IN PEACE shot this footage there in January, 2010.
As the crew was leaving, they discovered that the town would be demolished the very next day. Failaka had remained until that moment an island frozen in time.
