Bill Eggert of Fairview Cellars interview
Described as a straight shooter Bill Eggert is a special figure in BC's wine business. Fiercely independent as a business person, but an artist when it comes to creating fine wines. Bill speaks about the year ahead, and new wines in production for Fairview Cellars. Life is good, he says.
Wines from Okanagan Valley - James Melendez
Originally, I was going to write about Wines of Canada--a huge subject matter. I had to trim and focus on a great subject: Wines of Okanagan Valley. Okanagan Valley is a new world wine region that is both new and old. Okanagan Valley history begins in 1859 with French Catholic priest Charles Pandosy planting what is believed to be Vitis labrusca. A large part of the 1900s was devoted to hybrid wine grapes--there are old vines of Vitis vinifera but the majority of vines were hybrid grapes up until 1988. NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) was a call to replant with Vitis vinifera to be the dominate wine grapes to produce the highest quality wines.
The Okanagan Valley has approximately 60 varieties and going from North Okanagan Valley to South is a demarcation of white wines and Pinot Noir in the North to Bordeaux, Rhone and other red varieties in the South. The Okanagan Valley looks like no other wine country I have visited before. The Valley both creates and captures many microclimates and the lakes are a great reason for wine country being here. They are a moderating influence.
I completed my first 'Foot on Ground' tour--you can view Okanagan Valley online but without visiting it is hard to capture the amazing food and wines, the people, hearing from producers what they are doing and where they are going. A compelling wine country with all of the amenities that you might not expect but are certainly here.
I will return to visit more wineries and recapture such a great state of mind.

RIP-OFF BC Wine tasting Winegrowers NK'Mip Cellars SCAM
So I was chatting with a client about the terrible experience I had at NK'Mip and it turned out she dealt with the same MORON after showing him the picture on this video. She said: THIS IS HER!!!
Apparently she bought a case of wine from the same idiot, and what she tasted and took home was different. The receipt was the best proof. When she went back the next day, the same witch pretended she didn't know her. When my friend asked to speak to a manager, she walked away. Is this for real???

How To Open a Bottle Of Wine
Watch more Wine Drinking & Education videos:
Opening a bottle of wine isn't hard—which is why not being able to accomplish it is particularly embarrassing. Don't worry—with a little practice you'll be liberating the fruit of the vine in a few fluid motions.
Step 1: Cut metallic foil
Cut the metallic foil or plastic wrapper covering the cork, using the bottle's lower lip as a guide. Press the blade against the foil wrapper, and score all the way around the bottle's circumference.
Tip
Be sure to remove the foil from the lip of the bottle—it can ruin the taste if the wine comes in contact with it when poured.
Step 2: Place bottle upright
Place the bottle upright on a flat surface, or hold it between your knees slightly angled toward you at a comfortable height.
Step 3: Screw into cork
Dig the tip of the corkscrew into the middle of the cork, keeping it as straight as possible. With an even, downward pressure, rotate the screw clockwise until it disappears almost entirely into the cork.
Step 4: Grip with lever
Pivot the metal lever of the corkscrew so that the forked indentation grips the edge of the bottle's mouth and the corkscrew's handle is pointed down.
Step 5: Pull up
Holding the bottle firmly in place, grasp the handle and pull it straight up. The cork should come completely out.
Tip
Specialty wine openers, like the wing- or lever-style kind, require less effort to remove the cork. Just insert or clamp and then push the wings or lever down.
Step 6: Wipe the rim
Wipe the rim of the bottle with a clean, slightly damp napkin to remove any cork dust or residue before pouring. Salut!
Did You Know?
The first corkscrew was patented in 1795 by an English minister.
NW Winecast for March 10, 2009: B.C. wines
This week's Winecast features British Columbia wine writer Julianna Hayes. Last month, Managing Editor Eric Degerman traveled to the Okanagan Valley and judged wines with Hayes. She is a columnist for newspapers in the Okanagan Valley, a college educator and commentator for CBC Radio. The interview was conducted at Mystic River Vineyard in Oliver, B.C., an estate site for Wild Goose Vineyards and home to the winery's guest cottage. A review of her new pocket guide, Okanagan Wine, appears in the Spring 2009 issue of Wine Press Northwest.
Golden Mile Bench Terroir
Recorded October 29, 2011 - Perhaps I've been watching Top Gear too much but at this time of year, this was the best way to show you what's happening in the vineyards. This time of year really shows which vineyards are planted in the best areas. In just a short drive down from Hester Creek, you'll see a huge change in the life of the vines from one location to another. The Golden Mile Bench wineries (Fairview, Tinhorn, Gehringer, Hester, Antelope Ridge, and Road13) all share this similar terroir. These vineyards have warmer temperatures and the cold air drains down to the valley below where the cold air shortens the season.
