Fairy Falls Hike, Auckland, New Zealand
This is my very first video for The Kiwi Tramper YouTube channel taken at the Fairy Falls, Waitakere Ranges, Auckland. This was my first time filming with a Gopro and first time editing a video - big learning curve for both! I've learnt a lot and am looking forward to producing my next video! My priority for future videos will be getting better audio and stable footage. Please feel free to leave some feedback in the comments - I'd love to know your thoughts!

FAIRY FALLS / WAITAKERE RANGE / NEW ZEALAND VLOG #15
Another amazing waterfall in the Waitakere range is the Fairy falls. Unlike the Karekare (which is just 5-10minutes away from the parking lot), Fairy falls is a 40-50minute walk, but is totally worth it. On the way to the bottom of the waterfall, you will encounter several pool and mini waterfall which is a part of the head of the main Fairy falls. And you can swim too. Make sure to check it out when in Auckland.

A short hike down to Fairy Falls of Waitakere Ranges in New Zealand
Fairy falls NZ
Fairy Falls is located in the central part of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, and consists of significant lower falls (the main photo) and a series of shorter upper waterfalls. Among the locals, it’s one of the most popular waterfalls in Auckland Region.
Fairy Falls is roughly a 40 minutes’ drive away from Auckland City. The road surface is always sealed.
You have two options to approach the carpark: either follow the road which leads to Piha and turn right into Scenic Drive, or follow the road which leads to Bethells Beach and turn left into Scenic Drive. The carpark is found along Scenic Drive and it's well signposted. There are no facilities there (no toilets).
From the carpark, cross the main road to start a walking Fairy Falls Track. First part of the track is an easy and enjoyable walk through a bush. The second part consists of a set of stairs which starts from the top of the upper waterfall and lasts to the base of the lower falls. The walk from the carpark to the lower falls’ base will take 20 to 45 minutes (the official sign says ’45 minutes’, but it's the true if you walk really SLOW).
If you’ve got kids, they will be well rewarded by a nice spot for playing with other children at the lower falls pool.
From here, you can continue on to the walk for 45 more minutes and finish the track on Mountain Rd (return back to Scenic Drive via Old Coach Road Track), or return back via the same track. Due to the stairs, the walk back will take longer than the walk to the waterfall – expect anything between 40 to 60 minutes to return back from the base of the lower waterfall to the Scenic Drive carpark.
There is one more, less popular, option available to discover these waterfalls: when you drive along Scenic Drive, turn into Mountain Rd where you find a small carpark. Leave your car there and follow Fairy Falls Track for 30-45 minutes (the official sign says ’45 minutes’). First part of the track descends through the bush. The second part of the track follows the stream (require a couple of stream’s crossings which could be a wet-foot after a rain) until it meets the base of the lower waterfall. From here, you can climb up the stairs to see the upper waterfalls, or return back via the same track.

This video is a combined and reediting version for our previous two parts travel videos.
We had a trip to Fairy falls in January 2016. It took us one hour return. It was easy to go down to the bottom of Fairy falls, but it was tiring to go back up, there was so many staircases and we were both boiling like kettles! it was worth it though, as the waterfall was very pretty. Enjoy
Waitakere Ranges are one of the largest native forest areas in the Auckland region. and renowned for their natural beauty and dense rainforest.
