Yellowstone National Park - Fairy Falls Trail (2018)
Yellowstone National Park is an American national park located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful geyser, one of its most popular features. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.
Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years. Aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. Management and control of the park originally fell under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Interior, the first being Columbus Delano. However, the U.S. Army was subsequently commissioned to oversee management of Yellowstone for a 30-year period between 1886 and 1916. In 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year. Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than a thousand archaeological sites.
Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 km2), comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years. Half of the world's geysers and hydrothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. The park is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest remaining nearly-intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone. In 1978, Yellowstone was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Grand Prismatic Spring - from Fairy Falls Trail
via YouTube Capture
Fairy Falls -- September 19. 2013
Fairy Falls is a popular and easy hike -- the most common access is from the Fairy Falls Trailhead about a mile south of the Grand Prismatic parking lot (Midway Geyser Basin). From the Fairy Falls Trailhead, hike one mile to a marked trail junction and turn left on the Fairy Falls Trail. You will arrive at the waterfall in about 1.5 miles, making the entire roundtrip hike approximately five miles. Hikers can also continue beyond Fairy Falls to visit Spray and Imperial Geysers.
Fairy Falls (HD)
--------------------------
Fairy Falls is along Fairy Creek in Yellowstone, Wyoming, USA. The rocks at Fairy Falls are part of the West Yellowstone Flow (Central Plateau Member, Plateau Rhyolite, lower Upper Pleistocene, 111 to 114 ka), which is one of many rhyolite lava flows that partially filled in the Yellowstone Caldera after its large ~640 ka explosive ash eruption.

Yellowstone National Park Road Trip - Day 5
Day 5 of our adventure had us exploring Grand Prismatic Spring along the board walk as well as the lookout along the Fairy Falls Trail. We got caught in our first big animal jam. Had a Bison burger for lunch at Old Faithful. We also checked out Artist Point for some great photos of the waterfall.
Top Things to See at Yellowstone National Park
We spent two days exploring the amazing and unique Yellowstone National Park. Definitely visit if you haven't yet. Here are the top things you must see at Yellowstone:
0:40 - Upper Geyser Basin. The largest concentration of geysers in the world. Also the home to Old Faithful.
2:02 - Old Faithful. Erupts every 90 minutes pretty faithfully.
4:31 - Fairy Falls Trail to the Grand Prismatic Spring overlook. I suggest doing this if it's warm out - the cold weather makes so much steam that it obscures the view.
5:30 - Grand Prismatic Spring. One of the largest hot springs and an iconic Yellowstone highlight.
6:42 - Isa Lake and the Continental Divide. Honestly not a must-see at Yellowstone, but it was for us. It's only 20 minutes beyond Old Faithful.
7:07 - Fountain Paint Pots. Boiling mud, the dragon's lair (the red spouter), and our favorite geyser (sorry Old Faithful).
8:36 - Gibbon Falls. Worth a 2-minute stop. Great views. It's on the way to Canyon Village with Artist Point and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.
8:43 - Artist Point, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We still can't get over this view. It literally looks like a painting, even in real life.
9:31 - Uncle Tom's Point. Uncle Tom's Trail is a crazy steep trail, but it's really short. Your legs WILL be burning after this. Not good for people with a fear of heights.
11:06 - Canyon Overlook from Uncle Tom's Point. Wheelchair accessible trail with a great view of the Upper Falls.
11:22 - Canyon Overlook from the north side of the canyon. Great views of Lower Falls and the entire canyon.
11:39 - Brink of Lower Falls Trail. Switchbacks all the way down, but relatively short hike to within feet of the edge of Lower Falls. Really cool view.
13:02 - Calcite Springs Overlook. View of molten sulfur seeping out of the side of a mountain. Worth a 2-minute stop.
13:19 - Mammoth Hot Springs. Terraced hot springs. Super unique, really pretty.
14:26 - Canary Springs. The very top part of Mammoth Hot Springs. Personally this was our favorite part of Mammoth Hot Springs.
14:55 - Norris Geyser Basin. This geyser basin isn't quite is cool as Upper Geyser Basin, but one section of it is called Porcelain Basin, and that part is awesome. It includes a ton of fumaroles, lots of really colorful hot pools, and a vibrant green river that looks like it's straight out of Oz.
15:48 - Artists' Paintpots. Small section of paintpots that includes a few mud pits and lots of nice views.
Lamar Valley. If you want to see wildlife at Yellowstone, like bears, wolves, and bison, you need to go to Lamar Valley. It would have been too much driving and time to fit into our route on this trip, and we were more interested in seeing nature, landscapes, and thermal features, which is why we focused there. But if you'd rather see animals, definitely include Lamar Valley on your Yellowstone itinerary.

Yellowstone National Park - Scenic Views
Yellowstone was one of 12 National Parks we visited while traveling the Western States in Big Blue (our van built by @BearsBuilds). It was definitely an epic stop on our van life journey. We originally thought we would spend 2 hours in the Park just to see Old Faithful because that’s all we had ever heard of.
Well we were just plain - - WRONG! - -
Yellowstone National Park is filled with a large variety of geysers and hot springs.
You also have to be cautious about their larger wildlife - bison, bear, and moose. We spent three days here, walking and hiking most of the day and even then we felt we just scratched the surface with everything we saw.
Also, with Grand Teton National Park being so close, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th clips are actually located in the Grand Tetons... we spent a couple nights camped in Big Blue there also!
Some of the locations pictured here are: Upper Geyser Basin, Mammoth Hot Springs, Norris Geyser Basin, The Grand Prismatic, Fairy Falls, and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.
We hope this video inspires you to plan a visit to Yellowstone National Park! it is also a reminder of why we have to protect our parks and preserve their natural beauty!

Ranger-led walk to Fairy Falls and Imperial Geyser (long version)
This is about 20 minutes of a ranger-led walk that took around 5 hours. It's well worth doing one of the longer walks because you really get to see stuff well away from the touristy spots and you learn a lot too. I think we didn't see anyone from outside our group except at the very beginning and end of the walk, though clearly people go that way because there were mostly foot-worn paths. (There was a bit where there wasn't even that.)
The route took us to Fairy Falls, Spray Geyser, and Imperial Geyser, with other stuff to see along the way.
I'd been on a walk with this particular ranger back in 1989 and was happy to do one again. Now about 15 years later, I wonder if he still spends his summers there.
I'm not sure about what I think of the YouTube video stabilisation. It makes shaky video easier on the eye, but makes the already poor quality worse. So this is one of four edits: this long one with stabilisation; an identical one without it; and two identical shorter versions, one with and one without stabilisation.

2019 Wild West Road Trip Day 6 - Yellowstone National Park
June 20, 2019: Day 6 - We woke up excited and ready to explore as much of Yellowstone as we could possibly cram into one day. We started the day by eating a buffet breakfast at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge Obsidian Dining Room. Afterwards, we hiked Fairy Falls to the Grand Prismatic Springs Overlook, toured Gibbon Falls, Norris Geyser Basin area and drove to Mammoth Hot Springs for lunch. However, this area was so crowded, we decided to drive out the North entrance of Yellowstone and have lunch in Gardiner, MT and we're really happy we did. Not only did we add another state to our road trip adventure, but we were able to see the famous Roosevelt Arch built at the North entrance. After lunch, we continued our day by sightseeing at Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. It actually flurried a little in the Grand Canyon area. Our busy day finally started winding down and we exited the park via the South Entrance. We drove to Colter Bay Village Lodging, where we reserved a cabin in the Grand Tetons.
