INDIA: FAIRY QUEEN WORLD'S OLDEST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE
Eng/Hindi/Nat
The oldest steam locomotive in the world is up and running again.
The Fairy Queen steam engine was built in 1855 and has been resurrected after being kept in a museum to rekindle the nostalgia of the early British colonial times in India.
The mini train hauled by the vintage machine is aimed at the weekend travellers and foreign tourists and starts its commercial run from October 31.
The oldest locomotive in the world proving it's still not run out of steam.
After a complete overhaul, the historic Fairy Queen is ready to haul its admirers in a mini train of two carriages.
The engine was built in 1855 by the British locomotive firm Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson for the East India Railways.
The vintage machine has been certified the oldest working steam engine by the Guinness Book of World records.
Historical records show that the engine was used to ferry troops to crush the Indian uprising against the British in 1857.
After the British left India in 1947, Fairy Queen was used only for short distance travel.
With the advent of the more advanced diesel and electric engines, the steam engines fell into complete disuse.
The Fairy Queen was kept on display in the National Rail Museum in the Indian capital for nearly twenty years before its potential as a tourist attraction was realised.
Last year the engine was resurrected after a few repairs to the boiler and the brakes.
The engine has also been adapted to run on broad gauge rail tracks after several trial runs.
The Fairy Queen made its first successful journey of 170 kilometers last year from New Delhi to the city of Alwar.
Those looking after its maintenance say despite being behind the time technologically, the engine is in perfect condition.

This is world's oldest engine which is in working condition. Many engines made after it , even those less than 50 years old , have had to be discarded. This engine runs extremely well despite being so old.

The Fairy Queen weighs 26 tons and can be driven at speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour.
But drivers keep the speed limited to about 40 kilometers an hour because of its age.
It may not be the fastest train running but it does help its passengers to relive a bygone era with its sights and sounds.
Indian railway system is one of the biggest network of trains in the world that started running in 1853.
Many artefacts of the early colonial time have been damaged beyond repairs .
Travel writer Bill Aitken is one of the many admirers of India's rich railways heritage.
He says thousands of such priceless antiques in India are just waiting to be resurrected.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We have something unique and still functioning like the Fairy Queen...and its Dickens to get people aware that you got a terrific unique history....for God's sake , save it while you can. In another 10 years it will be too late. These things will have rusted and the
ability to keep them going will have been forgotten.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Aitken, Travel writer
Buoyed by the enthusiastic tourist response to the Fairy Queen, the Indian railway authorities plan to repair many more vintage locomotives.
Indian authorities say the move will give passengers being chugged along by the ancient machines, a journey back in time.

Fairy Queen - The Oldest working steam locomotive in the world | Indian Railways
---69th Republic Day Ceremonial Heritage Run of Fairy Queen---
Fairy Queen Steam Locomotive - World’s oldest working steam locomotive that features in Guinness Book of World.
Indian Railways has always been an unintended fountainhead of art and culture, reflecting the unique heritage and multicultural ethos of the country. It takes pride in preserving the Steam locomotive.
In the incessant search for energy sources, the invention of the steam engine changed the face of the earth. A principal source of power during the British Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the steam engine opened up a whole new world.
Indian Railway takes pride in preserving some of the oldest locomotives in the world. EIR 22: The Fairy Queen is a part of the allure of India’s heritage and the old-fashioned steam locomotives. The Fairy Queen has been revived again by team of Rail enthusiast for India to give a peep into an by-gone era.
Fairy queen is the world’s oldest working steam locomotive that features in Guinness Book of World. 26th January 2018 was the day chosen to commemorate the 69th Republic day heritage run. The smoking beauty exhibited her mighty self to the world and people watched her in awe. The curious on lookers tried to understand the mechanism of operations.
Steam locomotive mechanism is simple. It burns coal to release the heat energy it contains—so it's an example of what we call a heat engine, The rail locomotive produces its pulling power through a steam engine. It's a bit like a giant kettle sitting on top of a coal fire. The heat from the fire boils the water in the kettle and turns it into steam. But instead of blowing off uselessly into the air, like the steam from a kettle, the steam is captured and used to power the machine.
The oldest steam engine hauling a single coach left New Delhi to Old Delhi and then back to her shed in Rewari. Northern railway took the challenge of reviving the 162-year-old steam loco ‘Express EIR 22 Fairy queen.

Passengers share their feedback on Fairy Queen Express
Passengers share their feedback on the Fairy Queen Train: The lights and seating arrangement along with the engine is very good. Paintings and hospitality are giving a very warm and hospitable feeling. I just wish there was an air conditioner too as it tends to get hot. But in order to enjoy this train, I don't really miss the air conditioner. Fairy Queen journey was beautiful. Secondly, the catering, lunch as well as the snacks served were good in quality and tasty. The journey has been extremely comfortable.
