Places to see in ( Falmouth - UK )
Falmouth is a town, civil parish and port on the River Fal on the south coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Falmouth was where Henry VIII built Pendennis Castle to defend Carrick Roads in 1540. The main town of the district was then at Penryn. Sir John Killigrew created the town of Falmouth shortly after 1613.
While Falmouth's maritime activity has much declined from its heyday, the docks are still a major contributor to the town's economy. It is the largest port in Cornwall. Falmouth is still a cargo port and the bunkering of vessels and the transfer of cargoes also keep the port's facilities busy.
Falmouth is a popular holiday destination and it is now primarily a tourist resort. The five main beaches starting next to Pendennis Castle and moving along the coast towards the Helford river are Castle, Tunnel, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth beaches. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall opened in February 2003. The building was designed by the architect M. J. Long.
Falmouth is famous for its harbour. Together with Carrick Roads, it forms the third deepest natural harbour in the world, and the deepest in Western Europe. Falmouth is a terminus of the A39 road, connecting to Bath, Somerset some 180 miles (290 km) distant. Falmouth has three railway stations (described above) at the southern end of an 11 3⁄4 miles (19 km) branch line (the Maritime Line) to the county town of Truro.

Kayak trip - Porthallow to the Helford River near Falmouth Cornwall
September 2013 kayak trip, around the Helford River area and a beautiful day too.
Porthallow (Cornish: Porthalow) is a small fishing village on the east coast of the The Lizard peninsula just south of the Helford River, in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It sits between the two neighbouring villages of St Keverne and Roskorwell. It has one road running through it and a post office. It is also on the South West Coast Path. It has a pub, the Five Pilchards, named such for Cornwall's fishing fleet of five pilchards used to come out of Porthallow.
In this kayak trip we head from Porthallow round Nare head and into Gillan Creek, from there we head out around St Antonys into the Helford River and stop on a beach before returning.
The stony beach on Porthallow, that reaches out to a sandy one in low tide, is privately owned but can be accessed by anyone, villager or tourist. Manacles Reef, a dangerously rocky area that sinks many oncoming ships, lays just a mile off shore along with all its victims still there. It has a new village hall built in 2010 for the benefit of the villagers. It is as eco-friendly as possible with solar panels and floor heating from ground-floor beach heat. Many different local programmes take place such as yoga, Pilates, and monthly film showings. The wall facing the bay is made entirely of glass. Porthallow lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.
