Steps from the billowing spices of Souq Waqif is the adjacent falcon market (Falcon Souq), where, when in Doha, you must take your understanding of falcon value to be dismantled. More than 20 independent proprietors stock shops with real-live falcons awaiting masters, who on the right day (I heard Thursdays), in season (~autumn), will bid on their favorites. Falcons here can fetch up to $150,000 each.
Hunting with falcons is a popular sport in the Gulf - and Qatar's capital city, Doha, has a specialist hospital where injured birds are treated.

Falcon Souq in Doha (Souq Waqif) | Qatar Market
The falcon souq offers a great insight into falconry which is a part of the Arab culture. The falcon souq is located just next to the Souq Waqif (or is part of it???) and houses a number of shops where falcons and equipment for falconry are sold. Shop owners allow tourists to walk in, take pictures, and they answer questions. I can highly recommend to pay a visit to the falcon souq.
In Qatar, a country where falcons are revered and loved, falcons have traditionally been used for hunting, and such tradition still is pretty much alive. The falcon souq is located in one corner of Souq Waqif where visitors can admire these expensive birds, photograph and sometimes even hold them under the shopkeeper's supervision. The birds are so important here, that the souq has a falcon hospital. If you are lucky, you might find yourself attending a public falcon auction, attended usually only by males, where the prices of a falcon start at $3000.
This fascinating new souq, next to Souq Waqif, is worth a visit just to see the kind of paraphernalia involved in falconry. All kinds of equipment, such as burkha (hoods) and hubara (feathers), are on sale. During falcon season (October to March) you will also see dozens of peregrines and other assorted falcons patiently aperch their stands. A truculent falcon costs about QR2000, but a well-mannered bird can be many times that figure and usually changes hands privately. The shop owner is quite happy to show off the birds to anyone who shows some interest. The best part of the experience, however, is seeing young Qatari lads buying their first falcon under the beedy eyes of an uncle or grandfather, keen to hand down the family heritage of bird-handling skills.

Souq Waqif:
Souq Waqif (Arabic: سوق واقف, the standing market) is a souq in Doha, in the state of Qatar. The souq is noted for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to dozens of restaurants and Shisha lounges. Although it dates back at least a hundred years, it was renovated in 2006 to conserve its traditional Qatari architectural style. It is often perceived to be the only lasting area in Doha that retains an authentic feel notably in reference to its commerce, architecture and culture. The area is very popular with local and expats alike (especially on weekends) as it offers multiple dining options in the same location.
It is located in the district of Al Souq which is situated in the center of Doha. As it was a market used for trading activities, the area used to be located immediately adjoining the shore to allow for boats to access it. Although still facing the water, the direct link to the water front for boats is now divided by a major road and the recently completed park.
The souq is considered one of the best location for tourists within Doha. Thousands of people from across the region frequent it to purchase traditional goods. It hosts several art galleries, events and local concerts.A yearly spring festival around April hosts many theatricals, acrobatics and musical performances. An event featuring WWE wrestlers, called Souq Waqif Storm, attracted the most spectators. There was discussion over the possibility of a repeat festival.
There are pet stalls in Souq Waqif which sell a variety of domestic pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles and birds. The sub-par living conditions of the pets has been the subject of advocacy campaigns in recent years, with proponents arguing that the animals suffer from a lack of proper healthcare and exposure to adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, some customers allege that stall owners falsify vaccination records. There is also a separate area in the souq reserved for falcon handling.The Bird souq, as it's called, sells not only falcons but also the needed accessories such as landing pads and GPS guidance systems for the birds. This #summerinqatar during my 48 hours in Doha found there’s a bird market inside Souq Waqif ! There are little Budgies, parakeets, exquisite species of birds all for sale .... TBH it gets very noisy when the birds start talking to each other or when they saw my fur capped microphone get closer to them . Although i am not a big fan of birds in captivity but the love for birds in Qatar did impress me .
