Falls Reserve Conservation Area Campground Driving Tour (August 9, 2018)
A driving tour of the three main camping areas inside Falls Reserve Conservation Area. If you were planning or thinking about camping at this park for the first time, this will give you excellent insight into what the sites are like. The park is under the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority.
Falls Reserve is located along the Maitland River near the hamlet of Benmiller, Ontario and just a short drive from Goderich and Lake Huron. The park encompasses 230 acres with the Maitland Falls being the main feature for swimming and fishing.
The three main camping areas are Maple Campground, Cedar Campground and Sycamore Campground. Maple and Cedar have recently changed names from Mennesetung and Chippewa. Maple and Sycamore have full serviced sites while Cedar is unserviced and more suitable for tenting.
For anglers, the Maitland River has trout, salmon, smallmouth bass, carp, sucker and chub. Near the entrance, there is a stocked pond that is refilled each year with rainbow trout and largemouth bass.

(Oct. 29th/16) Falls Reserve Conservation Area (Goderich)
Investigating the salmon situation at Falls Reserve Conservation Area, just outside of Goderich, Ontario. We hadn't had any luck up stream at the cottage. Unfortunately no salmon here either, BUT wow what a view!

Maitland Falls at Falls Reserve Conservation Area
Maitland Falls is a short but long waterfall on the Maitland River at Falls Reserve Conservation Area. The campground/day-use park is located just east of Goderich, Ontario, Canada near the hamlet of Benmiller.
The waterfall area is popular for swimming in the summer months and for fishing much of the year. Smallmouth Bass is the feature fish at the waterfall but salmon, trout, carp and sucker are also found. The location around the waterfall is teeming with fish.
This area took a direct hit from the August 2, 2011 f3 tornado that did extensive damage to Goderich and the Benmiller Inn. Just downstream from the Maitland Falls, a path of tree destruction is still quite noticeable. This can be seen in some of the clips in this video.

Video around the main feature of Falls Reserve Conservation Area: Maitland Falls, a waterfall on the Maitland River, not far upstream from where the river meets Lake Huron. Falls Reserve is located about ten minutes inland from Goderich, Ontario.
The conservation area has serviced campsites, along with modern facilities. Fishing along the river is excellent for Smallmouth Bass and Salmon. With a snorkeling mask, you can get up close and personal with the aquatic inhabitants of the waterfall area. The most impressive are the large Carp that seemingly come out of nowhere.

Falls Reserve Conservation Area is located just east of Goderich, Ontario. We have often driven past the signs for the park but this was our first trip specifically to check it out.
The conservation area covers 230 acres of land and features camping, hiking and fishing. For swimming, visitors can take a short drive into Goderich which has excellent beaches and boardwalks along the shore. There are even pet-friendly spots!
In mid-April the park was still closed for camping, so we parked at the gate house, paid our minimal entry fee and headed in to follow one of the trails down to the Maitland River to see the water level at the river (which was very high and didn't resemble waterfalls at all).
We only saw a few other people during our hike but we did spot a Bufflehead, which is a small diving duck, and lots of salmon heading up stream to spawn.
There were several trails and they were all nicely marked and easy to follow. We took the blue trail toward the river and it did have at least one fairly steep area which required us to be a bit careful due to erosion and small rocks.
The park would be a great base camp for visitors wishing to explore the area, including Goderich, Bayfield and other small towns in the area. For hikers and anglers, there are lots of locations to explore within the area.
