Falls Ridge Preserve: Waterfalls and Caves near Blacksburg, Virginia
Falls Ridge Preserve is property owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy. It is located in Falls Hollow just off the North Fork of the Roanoke River, outside of Blacksburg, in Montgomery County, Virginia. The preserve protects some fantastic limestone formations known as a 'travertine waterfalls' and some unique caves. The creek water contains high concentrations of minerals, which are deposited over time to form the odd shapes around the falls. This process often includes calcification of plants and other organic materials. Green streaks can be observed in the rocks where moss and other plants have been calcified into stone. The main waterfall is appriximately 50 feet high, and there are other smaller falls and cascades. Travertine formations can be observed all along this creek, including outside the preserve boundaries. The rock formation containing the main falls also contains a high number of small bears den style caves. The loop hike around the falls and caves was very short and easy. Thanks for watching!

Hiking Stiles Falls at Alta Mons, Virginia
Stiles Falls is a 40 foot waterfall located on Purgatory Creek, on private property in Floyd County, Virginia. The short hike actually begins in Montgomery County, at the front of Alta Mons, a retreat owned by a Methodist organization. It's 1.5 miles from the parking to the falls (about 3 miles round trip). The hike is mostly easy; however, there are several creek crossings and some moderate rock scrambles. Although most of the hike is on a pleasant grade, there were also a couple of short steep sections. Besides the falls itself, there were numerous cascades and interesting features on the creek as well as some impressive rock formations along the ridge. If visiting this site, please be mindful that the entire hike is on private property. The owner is very gracious to allow public access. Public access is not allowed when private programs are in session or when there is flooding or inclement weather.

Apple Orchard Falls, Virginia, Rainy Day Hike
Apple Orchard Falls is a 200 foot waterfall located along North Creek, on the western slope of Apple Orchard Mountain, in the Jefferson National Forest of Botetourt County, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. This is one of the most popular hikes in the area. It is a moderate climb with spectacular creek views, numerous cascades and small waterfalls, cool rock formations, and of course the main falls.
There are several ways to access Apple Orchard Falls, and combining the Falls trail with forestry roads and other trails also allows one to complete a loop hike. Due to time and the hazardous weather conditions on the day of my visit, I opted to only hike up to the main falls and then return via the same route. Thanks for watching!

The Cascades, Barneys Wall, Butt Mountain, Jefferson National Forest, VA
This beautiful hike in Jefferson National Forest near Pearisburg, Virginia travels deep into Little Stony Creek Gorge to The Cascades, one of the best waterfalls I've seen in the Southeast. I took the Lower Trail which sticks beside the creek for 2 miles, passing by multiple large cascades and a small slot gorge. Beyond The Cascades I hiked further to the little known Upper Cascades, then took the steep Conservancy Trail up to Barneys Wall. Although the views aren't all-encompassing, Barneys Wall is a vertical cliff nearly 400-ft tall that overlooks the gorge.
From there I continued on the trail and a forest road where hardly a hiker ventures to the old fire tower on Butt Mountain. On the southwest side of the mountain is a cliff overlooking Pearisburg and the New River Valley. I made a fateful decision to find Lookoff Rock on the south side of Butt Mountain, which turned out to be a bushwhack through waist-high thorns with plenty of bear scat and spiders along the way. At the peak according to my GPS there were no views, so I turned around and headed back to the fire tower. Overall it was a great hike excluding the bushwhack excursion, I hope you enjoy the video!

Harvest Host Free Camping at Whitebarrel Winery in Virginia

On this Airstream Life vLog, we leave Tennessee Valley Winery and continue northward towards our family reunion in VA. However, we decide to split the drive up and stop in Christiansburg VA at Whitebareel Winery for the night as part of the Harvest Host program.
With a Harvest Host membership, we have access to hundreds of wineries, breweries, farms, museums and more which offer free overnight dry camping. In return, we make sure to buy something from the business which is never difficult given the types of places we get to camp.
At Whitebarrel Winery we get to camp in the parking lot next to the wine tasting room and surrounded by grape vines. It's lovely! We have a few miscues trying to taste wine since it was a Tuesday and they are sometimes closed on Tuesdays but we did eventually get in and boy are we glad we did. The wines were amazing! Courtney thinks the best wine we have had since hitting the road 2 months ago, and that's saying something given how many Harvest Hosts we've stayed at.
We had a lovely time tasting and learning about local grapes from our host. We then headed back to the Airstream with our newly acquired bottles and settled in for a quiet night. They offer water and electric hookups here for $20 but we decided to forego since we had sun for solar and plenty of water. The catalytic heater kept us nice and warm!
We spent a quiet night among the vines with no noise or light pollution to worry about. This is a great stopover if you are traveling north on 81 in VA.
We finally reach our destination and start adventuring around VA and DC in the next video, so stay tuned!

BLACKSBURG, VA || Virginia Tech through the Seasons
Music: Falls by Bayonne
There's something mighty special about the four seasons of Appalachia-- the bright white snowy winters, wildflower springs, the thunderstorm summers, and the crisp, colorful autumns are truly like no other! I was fortunate enough to spend nearly four years in mountain town Blacksburg, home to the beautiful campus of Virginia Tech and this past year felt inspired to film the town, campus and surrounding areas through seasons autumn and winter. I hope you enjoy it! And if you do, feel free to share it with others (:

The large winter storm that impacted Virginia on Thursday, November 15 brought ice accumulations to the mountains of western Virginia, including Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. Ice accumulated mostly on trees and elevated surfaces, but delayed travel in the AM. Sleet and freezing rain mixed for most of the day while temperatures hovered right around freezing. Accumulations ranged from 0.1” to 0.25” across the area.
