The Falls of Shin is a spectacular waterfall in Sutherland, part of the Northern Highlands in Scotland. It's one of the best places to watch salmon leaping as they travel to Loch Shin to reproduce. Otters are also known to inhabit the River Shin. The surrounding countryside is a haven for many species of birds.

Lairg nestles in the middle of East Sutherland. It's the nearest thing there is to a town and a great place to base a few days touring or walking. Loch Shin offers lots of opportunity for sailing and fishing

This Scottish town located in the Highlands at the south eastern end of Loch Shin is known as The Crossroads of the North. Sir James Nicolas Sutherland Matheson, 1st Baronet, FRS, born 17 November 1796, died 31 December 1878, was a Scottish trader in India. Born in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland, he was the son of Captain Donald Matheson. He attended Edinburgh's Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh. He and William Jardine went on to co found the Hong Kong based trading conglomerate Jardine Matheson & Company. that became today's Jardine Matheson Holdings. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day
This is... Invershin (episode 17)
Episode 17 in this amateur and informal series of videos as we look around some of Britain's railway stations.
INVERSHIN is a request stop and is the 7th one we encounter as we head south on the Far North line towards Inverness.
The station serves the village of Invershin although this is located a short distance away. The Invershin Hotel is located just outside the station.
Invershin station opened in 1874 and is on the North side of the Kyle of Sutherland with Culrain station being on the opposite side of the Shin viaduct under a mile away. This providing one of the shortest distances between stations in Scotland.
The station has a single platform, waiting shelter and help point. It was nice to see the bench had just been repainted.
On the day we visited the train we intended to catch was cancelled, and no replacement transport turned up. Thankfully we had the option to cross the Kyle of Sutherland by footbridge and visit Culrain station to film that and return to Invershin to catch a service bus onwards. With very little useful information from Scotrail control on the help point, and no phone signal, this could have been a long wait!
Service trains are provided by Scotrail class 158 DMUs and stop if requested at Invershin.

Saturday, August 19th 2017 - Started out the afternoon Dornoch, Scotland and drove to the Dalmore Distillery in Alness via route A9. Proceeded to back north on A9 to the Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain. Continued up A9 north to check out the Clynelish Distillery in Brora. Unfortunately the distillery wasn't open for tours when we arrived, but we drove around anyway. Decided to head to the Fall of Shin via A9 back towards Inverness, made a right onto A839 towards Lairg. Made a couple wrong turns, did some touristy stuff at the Falls before taking A949 back to Dornoch.
