Wadowice part II
Continued exploration of the life of St. John Paul II, from his childhood home-turned-museum in Wadowice, Poland.
Poland: Wadowice
Wadowice's history ... The history of the town of Wadowice can be traced back to the 13th century. First it belonged to the princedom of the Silesian Piasts, next to form a part of the Principality of Oswiecim that would morph later into Principality of Zator. In 1482 the short-lived Principality of Wadowice was created that lasted 11 years. Returned to the Zator statelet, in 1495 Wadowice was bought with it by Poland and incorporated to the powerful kingdom. During the first partition of Poland in 1772 the Austrian Empire annexed the southern part of the Krakow province, including Wadowice. In 1867 the town was made the capital of a county, which brought it new prosperity. In 1918, after the Great War, Wadowice returned to Poland reborn as a republic. At the outset of the Second World War, when the Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, Wadowice was annexed to the Third Reich. Since the end of the WWII the town has been Poland again.
The Birthplace of Pope John Paul II ... Wadowice has gotten international recognition as the birthplace of Pope John Paul II. Born in 1920 as Karol Wojtyla, the future Pontiff lived in Wadowice till 1938 when he moved to Krakow to study at its ancient Jagiellonian Univesity. Yet to his last days the late Holy Father remembered fondly his Wadowice youth and places associated with it, the schoolmates, his teachers, and other local folks he had used to know. Also, he tried to include the town, when possible, in his visits to Poland.
Tourists seek in Wadowice sites connected with Pope John II. Their first obvious choice is the house at 7 Koscielna Street with flat where the future Vicar of Christ was born and raised. The place has been turned to a museum and exhibits comprise the Wojtyla family's former possessions such as an oven, a shelf, a table, tableware, a laundry basket, family pictures as well as personal belongings of Father Karol Wojtyla -- skis, a rucksack, a cap, a prayer book, etc., plus photos from his three visits to Wadowice as the Pope. The building is situated in the town's heart, next to the baroque church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the central square.
The church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is perhaps most iconic in the life of the Pontiff. The future John Paul II grew up in its shadow, was baptized a Catholic and later confirmed in it, served as an altar boy and prayed daily here before its miraculous picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The church's Gothic chancel dates from the 15th century while the late-Baroque nave and aisles were built in the 1790s. The left aisle contains a baptismal font where the baby Karol Wojtyla was baptized.

POLAND: KRAKOW: POPE JOHN PAUL II VISITS PARENTS' GRAVE
Natural Sound
As his tour of his homeland draws to a close, Pope John Paul the Second has visited the tomb of his parents in Krakow.
The pontiff also said Mass at the church where he gave his first service as a priest.
And later in the day he visited a new heart surgery clinic that has been named after him.
In what many believe will be his last visit to Poland, Pope John Paul the Second visited his parent's grave in Krakow on Monday.
There is no mention of the pope, but people visit the tomb to pay their respects to his family, even when the pontiff is not in town.
A choir sang as the 77-year-old kneeled before the tombstone and prayed.
The simple, granite gravestone is engraved with the names of his mother, father and brother.
Just 10 metres (25 feet) away are the graves of Red Army soldiers and a monument dedicated to their heroism in World War Two.
The pope lit a candle in front of the tomb.
Sprays of roses in the Polish and Vatican colours - red and white and yellow and white - decorated the modest tomb.
The pope began the day with a private Mass in a chapel at Wawel Royal Cathedral, where he held his first service as a priest in 1946.
Later in the day, he opened a new heart surgery clinic, that has been named after him.
The pontiff met with recent transplant patients and told them he understood what they were going through first hand.
The ageing pope has gone through a series of operations in recent years, including a hip replacement and removal of what the Vatican says was a benign colon tumour.
Many Poles fear this could be the last visit for John Paul.
But church officials suggested he may return next year, when he has been invited for the one-thousandth anniversary of the city of Gdansk on the Baltic coast.
The pope returns to Rome on Tuesday after spending 11 days in his homeland.

Polish pilgrims make long journey by road to attend Vatican canonisation ceremony
Pilgrims from Pope John Paul II's hometown of Wadowice in Poland took a 24-hour journey across Europe in order to witness his canonisation ceremony at the Vatican on Sunday.
The pilgrims left Wadowice on a bus on Friday morning and arrived in Rome on Saturday afternoon.
The late Polish pontiff is to be canonised along with late Pope John XXIII on Sunday.
During the trip, the pilgrims sung religious songs, prayed, and watched a film about John Paul II's life.
Along the way, they made a stop in the Italian town of Assisi to visit Saint Francis' sanctuary and the basilica, before moving on to the small town of Sacrofano, where a pilgrim shelter is located.
From there, they walked 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) to reach a train station from where they carried on to finally reach Rome.
Their journey came to an end some kilometres (miles) later, at St Peter's Basilica.
One of the pilgrims, Maria Guzik, said: We are very happy, we come from the town where Pope John Paul was born.
Teresa Byrska, another one of the pilgrims said enthusiastically: I love you Rome, I love Vatican, I love the Pope.
One (m) million people are expected to flood into Rome for the event, according to the Italian Interior Ministry.

Plenty have been written and said about the remarkable journey of Karol Jozef Wojtyla, popularly known as Pope John Paul II, to the most sacred seat of catholic community in the world. Throughout his lifetime, he earned both the admiration and criticism for his stands and opinions and enjoyed great influence over the masses. Along with being the longest serving Pope in history, he was also the first non-Italian since 1523 to become the Pope. Considered one of the most powerful religious authorities of 20th century, he was instrumental in improving relationships of the Catholic Church with Judaism, Islam, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. Never restricting himself to the comforts and safety of Vatican, he pushed aside the boundaries of religion, culture, caste and creed to spread the message of ‘God’ and apologized for the wrong doing and sufferings inflicted by the Catholic Church over the centuries. However, he defended the church’s decision to oppose the marriage of same sex couples for which he also faced great opposition. He vehemently opposed the various aspects of Liberation Theology (liberation movement in catholic theology) and also criticized the U.S invasion of Iraq, incessantly. -------------------------------
Childhood & Early Years
Karol Jozef Wojtyla who later came to be known as Pope John Paul II, was the youngest of the three children born to Karol Wojtyla sr. and Emilia Kaczorowska, a school teacher in Wadowice, Poland.
He witnessed great tragedies during his childhood. His mother passed away when he was just nine and three years later his brother also died.
After moving to Krakow with his father in 1938, he was enrolled to the Jagiellonian University. There, he learned philosophy along with other languages and also volunteered as a librarian.
While pursuing education, he worked with various theatrical groups as a playwright. He also developed a special liking for languages and learned 12 foreign languages which he used extensively while serving as a Pope.
In 1939, Nazis invaded Poland and they closed the University and those capable of working were required to find a job. He worked as a messenger for a restaurant as well as a manual labourer in a lime stone quarry and also in a chemical factory.
---------------------------
Priesthood & World War II
By the time his father died, he had already resolved to become a priest and in this pursuit, he approached the Bishop’s Palace in Krakow in 1942 to seek permission to study for priesthood. Soon, he started attending Clandestine Underground Seminary run by the Archbishop of Krakow.
During World War II, on August 6, 1944, the day which came to be known as the ‘Black Sunday’, Gestapo, the secret police of Nazi Germany started imprisoning young men to prevent uprisings in Krakow, similar to the one that had broken out recently in Warsaw.
To avoid capture, he hid himself in the basement of his uncle’s house and later escaped to the Archbishop’s Palace.fter the Germans fled the city, the students reclaimed the dilapidated seminary where Wojtyla volunteered to clean the piles of excrement in the toilets.
After completing his studies, he was ordained as a priest on November 1, 1946. As a priest, he was sent to the Pontifical International Athenaeum Angelicum in Rome to study under French Dominican Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange.
He became a licentiate in July 1947 and successfully completed his doctoral thesis titled, ‘The Doctrine of Faith in St. John of the Cross’ on June 14, 1948. He returned to Poland the same year.

Drops of blood flowing from the eyes of Our Lady of Calvary were noticed on the painting given to the Bernadine Fathers in 1641. The first Calvary (or way of the Cross) created in Poland is located here and its layout is based on the topography of old Jerusalem. The complex includes the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a Bernadine monastery and Mount Calvary itself, with forty four chapels scattered over the hills. Inside the church, the mannerist retro choir stalls with twenty six scenes from the Life of the Virgin, the richly carved mid-seventeenth century pulpit and the Baroque high alter all merit close attention.
SALVE REGINA, Mater misericordiae. O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.
From young priest to saint: Poland remembers Pope John Paul II
Sunday's canonisation of Pope John Paul II will carry a particular resonance in his native Poland - and especially in his hometown of Wadowice.
This is where Karol Wojtyla was baptised, where he went to school, where he played in school plays and where he served for a mass as an altar boy every day.
The Wojtyla family lived modestly, with their main source of income being the salary of the father, an officer in the military.
His mother, who took odd jobs as a tailor, died when he, the future...

POLAND: POPE JOHN PAUL II ARRIVES FOR 11 DAY VISIT
Natural Sound
Pope John Paul II started an 11-day visit to his native Poland on Saturday with a visit to the southwestern city of Wroclaw.
On Sunday half a (m) million people are expected to visit the city to try to get a glimpse of the pontiff when he says mass at the close of a Eucharistic Congress.
A homecoming for Pope John Paul.
The papal plane touched down at Warsaw on Saturday morning, bringing the pontiff for his seventh visit to his native land as pope.
Hundreds of flag-waving well-wishers turned out to welcome the 77-year-old Roman Catholic leader.
Looking frail, John Paul emerged under a shower of light rain to be greeted by religious and political dignitaries.
The pontiff told the crowd that Poland can play an important role in the family of European nations.
Poland has been pushing hard for quick acceptance into NATO and the European Union.
John Paul also said although he's now living far away in Italy he never ceases to feel like a child of Poland.
And he joked about the cold drizzle that greeted him, calling it true Polish weather.
Later John-Paul arrived in the southwestern city of Wroclaw, the first stop on his massive tour, to the obvious delight of nuns at its cathedral .
On Sunday he'll be saying mass in the City at the close of a Eucharistic Congress.
Church officials say they expect half a (m) million people to visit the city to try to get a glimpse of the pontiff.
The trip will be one of the longest tours of his 19-year papacy; the pope plans to visit 12 cities in 11 days.
The Polish trip also includes the cities of Pozan and Krakow and stops of significance for the country's powerful Roman Catholic Church in Czestochowa and Gniezno.
The trip also will include nostalgia.
The pope will visit the his parents' tomb, the Tatra mountains where he used to ski and the school where he secretly studied theology during the Nazi occupation.
