THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN VIETNAM - Fansipan, SaPa | On the way to TV
We went for a day trip to reach the summit of Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan), the highest mountain in Vietnam and Indochina which is located only 10 minutes away from Sapa town. We took the cable car build there just few month before we visited (Feb 2016) and let me just tell you... actually, just watch the video.

SAPA VIETNAM Travel up Fansipan Mountain
Are you thinking of heading to Sapa Vietnam to travel up Fansipan and wondering if it is worth it?
Fansipan mountain was the main reason we decided to ride to Sapa and in this second video, we finish our Fansipan cable car ride to the top. The first thing we noticed when we got up there, was just how much colder it was! It was freezing, way colder than we had expected. The second thing we noticed was the amazing views!
As this is the highest point in Vietnam and the tallest mountain in IndoChina, at 3,143 metres, the air does get a bit thinner up there and we certainly noticed this when we chose to climb the 600 stairs to the very top. However there is the option of another funicular to run you up to the top if stairs aren't your thing.
Do we think it is worth it, definitely! It's not cheap, as we covered in our previous video, but we are glad we made the decision to do it. The two points we would make are - We went in the low season and the crowds were totally bearable, we do worry in high season the numbers of people and lack of room could have a very negative effect on the experience and the second point is - food and drink up the top costs twice as much or more than what you will pay in town, so if you are travelling on a budget, take drinks and snacks with you.
If you are going to travel Vietnam and thinking of heading out Sapa way, definitely consider putting Fansipan on the list!
We'd love it if you liked and shared this video, so others who haven't yet heard of us, also get a chance to share in the experience. Thanks :)

Music: To Be A Ball Of Light by Late Night Feeler
We are Leon and Tash, a New Zealand vlogging couple who set off on an amazing Vietnam adventure as fulltime travellers, backpacking Vietnam.
But we weren't going to travel to Vietnam for one of those ordinary backpacking Vietnam trips you hear about everybody doing, where they go for a couple off weeks and check out the beaches or maybe riding through Vietnam at such a crazy pace that they never get off the beaten track. No we want more than that.
Our Vietnam adventures start with learning the way of the locals, taking just enough time to figure out how things work, discover what the Must see places in Vietnam are and more importantly where Vietnam's hidden gems are...
To do this, we moved to Danang Vietnam. The plan was to spend 3 months living in Da Nang, meeting and learning from locals about the culture, the amazing food, their way of living and what places they would recommend to travel in Vietnam.
And because Danang is in the middle of the country, we hoped we might meet other tourists or expats who were having their own Vietnam travel adventure or were at the halfway point of motorcycle riding through Vietnam and hear from them, what places they thought we must visit in Vietnam. Also, as new travel vloggers, having a base there meant we could try things like doing Da Nang Vietnam travel vlog or creating a Danang Vietnam travel guide, before also taking on the stresses of fulltime travel.
Then in month 4, that's when the real Vietnam adventure begins. With our new list of must see places, we will head to Saigon and buy a couple of motorbikes. to start our Vietnam road trip!
Motorcycle riding through Vietnam seems like one of the most hectic, crazy and chaotic things anyone could do, but we can't wait!! And we wont be following a simple South to North / Saigon to Hanoi route, we plan on doing more like a figure 8, so that our travel in Vietnam will cover both the inland and coastal areas of this amazing country.
So can we still say we are backpacking Vietnam? Or should we be telling people our travel in Vietnam is a motorcycle trip through Vietnam? We're not sure, but what we do know is, our Vietnam road trip is going to cover over 6000km's from Saigon right up to the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc near Cao Bang, round the northern point of the Ha Giang loop and everything else we can access in between.
So we hope you'll join us, the New Zealand vlogging couple, on our Vietnam adventure by clicking subscribe to join the Tribe and experience our travel in Vietnam..

Sapa Station starts at Muong Hoa valley, the arrival station is a high point of 3000 meters very close to the top of Fansipan mountain. The cable car route is 15 minutes instead of climbing two to four days as before.
During the 15-minute trip, tourisms will see the beauty of Muong Hoa Valley, the dense primeval forests and Hoang Lien Son Mountains majestically.
Imagine that you may touch thick clouds when going higher. Visitors’ visions will be limited. Fansipan (Vietnamese: Phan Xi Păng) is a mountain in Vietnam. At 3,143 metres (10,312 ft), it is the highest mountain in the Indochinese Peninsula (comprising Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia), hence its nickname the Roof of Indochina. It is located in the Lào Cai Province of the Northwest region of Vietnam, 9 km southwest of Sa Pa Township in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.
The origin of the name Phan Xi Păng is unclear. The most accepted theory is that the name evolved from Hủa Xi Pan (the tottering giant rock) - the name that the locals called the mountain based on its shape. Another theory suggested that the name came from Hmong people as the name means Azalea Mountain in their language due to the prevalence of azalea and other species of Rhododendron genus on the mountain.
Fansipan was formed around 250-260 million years ago, between the Permian period in the Paleozoic era and the Triassic period in the Mesozoic era. The Himalayan orogeny since Late Meosozic has further uplifted Fansipan and the Hoang Lien Son Range and created the Red River Fault to the east.[4] Currently, the mountain continues to be raised at a rate of 0.032 m (0.10 ft) a year.
The initial metal pyramid was made and installed here by Soviet engineers from Hòa Bình in 1985. The amateur mountaineering expedition was the first one since the end of the colonial period and was officially timed to the 40th anniversary of the Victory Day of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany.
Fansipan can be climbed in a steep and fairly strenuous hike. Previously, it would take about 5-6 days from Sa Pa to reach Fansipan peak and return. Now the total time is usually only about 3 days, even 2 days, or for experts and strong, healthy people, it can be done in one day.
A cable car to the peak of Fansipan was inaugurated on February 2, 2016. It departs from a terminal in Muong Hoa Valley near Sa Pa and takes 20 minutes to arrive at the summit. The service holds two Guinness World Records for the longest non-stop three-rope cable car in the world, spanning 6.3 km (3.9 mi), and the greatest elevation difference by a non-stop three-roped cable car for the 1,410 m (4,630 ft) difference in elevation between the termini.
It is very important to research weather and when to visit various places in Vietnam as the rainy season can put a gloomy mood on things. With Mount Fansipan, you will be trekking in part for the gorgeous views of the top and Sapa valley but you won’t see these views if it’s cloudy and rainy. You might also be freezing when you get there. For the most ideal conditions, make the trek between October and April. During the summer, it can rain and make the trail treacherous even with good hiking shoes. However, December and January can be quite cold, the peak has even seen some snow! If you are in Hanoi and have a flexible schedule, I suggest watching the weather in order to ensure the best experience. Sapa is a far hike in of itself, the trek even longer, so make sure the weather conditions are ideal.
