Ruins of Faqra Roman Temples in Faraya, Lebanon
After the snowy mountains of Mt. Faraya, we found this ruins on our way down to Beirut plus a surprise view at the end of the mountain.
Faqra, Lebanon
Video with images of Faqra an ancient settlement in a region inhabited by Semitic tribes. On a plateau at an altitude of fifteen hundred metres are the ruins of a sanctuary consisting of two Phoenician temples and a Greco-Roman temple.
The Greco-Roman temple was dedicated to Adonis. From the original structure three altars for animal sacrifices remain. Greek inscriptions indicate that the largest altar resembling a tower was reconstructed in the first century AD. They mention that it was built by local people in honour of the Roman emperor Tiberius Claudius. The smallest altar on a square platform resembles a portico with twelve columns. It seems to date from an earlier period.
The largest of two Phoenician temples was dedicated to Bel Galassos. In front of the main entrance was a colonnade. The forecourt had an altar within a colonnaded rectangular wall. Steps led to the cella or inner shrine built against the rocks. The only remnants are six Corinthian columns supporting a frieze. The adjacent Astarte temple was built in the first century AD. An inscription indicates that it was built by local people to honour the descendants of king Agrippa. The temple had two plain rooms without a colonnade. In the Byzantine period the original structure was transformed into a baptistry as part of a church. The nave of the church had two rows of columns which still stand today.
