Penguins on Magdalena Island ©Kristina Trowbridge
the last day of our cruise on the Via Australis, we landed on Magdalena Island in the Strait of Magellan, not far from Punta Arenas in Patagonia, Chile. these cute little guys come here every year to lay eggs and rear their young until they are ready to swim away. A couple of curious little fellows tried to get part of my clothing to make a nest with. See for yourself .... too cute!

Snow blankets Chile's south
Heavy storms have dumped six feet of snow on southern Chile, leaving communities isolated by blocked roads and downed power lines.
Ride Day 73: El Calafate to Punta Arenas, Chile
Full Post: After a few rain soaked days in El Calafate, Argentina I made my way to Punta Arenas, Chile, and yet another border crossing. I would start on Ruta 40 then onto Ruta 3, then cross over into Chile on Ruta 255 and finish on Ruta 9.
The border crossing was only a hundred miles away, so I was hoping there would be no lines and I could get on my way into Chile without too much fuss.
The closest town to the border on the Argentinian side is many miles from the border of the ADUANA - Paso de Integración Austral and on the Chilean side is Punta Delgada.
Although the trip total was 336 miles (541 kilometers), it is mostly paved. I started Ruta 40, and the whole trip took me just over 8 hours.
Everything is in the one building here. So you do both Argentina to Chile, Chile to Argentina in one building. If you look like a biker, they will direct you after each of the four steps.

VENTUS AUSTRALIS EXPEDITION CRUISE SHIP DOUBLE AA CABIN #332 TOUR: INSIDE LOOK REVIEW VIDEO
As far as cabins on an expedition cruise ship goes, this is one of (if not the most) deluxe cabins I've stayed in. Ventus Australis is pretty much brand new and it felt that way. Shiny, spotless, classy, sleek with lots of lovely touches, great beds and gorgeous soft linen. This is an inside look review video of the WHOLE cabin, in detail, giving a tour of the entire space, from the bathroom to the storage cupboards to the hairdryer to the little treats left in our room. This was an AA double cabin (also I think called a matrimonial cabin) with an amazing picture window - perfect for ogling the scenery as you sail by. Watch the video to see what I mean! And to get a sense of what the whole expedition cruise feels like watch my whole cruise video:

Stunning Footage: Argentine penguin hordes gather to breed
Over a million penguins have gathered at Argentina's Punta Tombo peninsula for their breeding season, a record number according to local officials. Drawn by an unusually abundant haul of small fish, the world's largest colony of Magellanic penguins offered up an even larger than normal spectacle. The warm-weather birds breed in large colonies in southern Argentina and Chile and migrate north as far as south-western Brazil between March and September.

The Last Degree - Fat Bike to the South Pole
Introducing The Last Degree, the first ever group fat bike expedition to the South Pole.
In this incredible 18 day adventure, participants will cycle 111 km from the 89th parallel to the most southerly point on Earth – the Geographic South Pole. The cyclists will have an opportunity to experience firsthand the unforgiving but magical Antarctic landscape. They will be rewarded with the satisfaction of completing what was, until now, simply never done.
The expedition will start with 4 days of preparation in Punta Arenas, Chile. From there, the group will fly to the Union Glacier base camp in Antarctica. After further preparations and test rides, the group will be flown by small aircraft to the 89th parallel to begin this incredible challenge. Riding up to 20 km over the next 9 days, they will then make their way to the South Pole.
This is an opportunity to be part of a unique group of individuals that will be the ‘World’s First’ cycling group to stand at the South Pole.
Patagonia Video Guide | Expedia
At the fabled ‘edge of the world’ the natural wonders of Patagonia await. This last frontier of South America slopes down from The Andes towards Antarctica.
This is a land of legendary beauty, where Mother Nature runs the show. Prepare to feel dwarfed by mighty volcanoes, towering glaciers and floating icebergs.
On the Argentinean side, a relaxing day trip takes you from sleepy San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura. Simply follow the scenic Road of the 7 Lakes, taking in two national parks. This will bring you to San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular mountain resort on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi.
Take a detour along the famous Ruta 40 to the town of El Chaltén: Argentina’s trekking capital in the southern Andes. Hike to the idyllic Laguna Capri or higher lookout points to gaze up at Fitz Roy mountain. View the jagged peaks of Cerro Torre, which few dare to climb.
El Calafate is nestled on the southern shores of Lago Argentino, the gateway lake to Los Glaciares National Park. Embark on an epic journey to the world’s third-largest freshwater reserve: the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Board the 'End of the World Train’ to Tierra del Fuego National Park or join a cruise along the Beagle Channel, to experience Antarctica without actually going there.
On the Chilean side, you can find fascinating historic and cultural attractions in pretty colonial cities, such as the regional capital Punta Arenas.
On your way north, take a detour to the Milodón cave. This prehistoric shelter held the remains of a giant ground-dwelling sloth and other huge extinct species.
The dramatic national park of Torres del Paine is brimming with lakes that spill out into gorgeous waterfalls, such as Salto Grande.
Spot the spectacular outline of the Osorno Volcano, the focal point of Los Lagos, the lake region that forms the northern border of Chilean Patagonia.
This magical wilderness at the far edge of the world reminds us that we are just temporary spectators of nature’s infinite beauty.
Patagonia Adventure
Patagonian camping trip in January 2008 with our good friends Peter and Caroline. We started in Puerto Montt in Chile, crossed the Andes to Bariloche in Argentina, travelled south to return to Chile over the Andes at Futaleufu and continued down the Carretera Austral as far as Caleta Tortel.
As well as white-water rafting, mountain climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and hiking, we visited three glaciers: Ventisquero Colgante at Quelat, Ventisquero Exploradores, and Ventisquero Jorge Montt.
Here's the map of our route:
Viento - #inPatagonia
During our scouting trip to the Balmaceda Glacier, we learned two basic things: it's windy in Patagonia and the glacier has retreated far enough away that we can't access it. Still, Patagonia is an amazing place and we feel lucky to have adventured here! #inPatagonia

In this episode I am riding through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. This is some of the best scenery Patagonia has to offer - and I was very lucky with the weather. I started the ride from Puerto Natales and ended in Cerro Castillo, right at the border with Argentina. A total of 213 kilometers through stunning landscapes!

Travel Guide to Chile
As the longest, thinnest country in the world, Chile stretches all the way from the borders with Bolivia and Peru in the north, 4,500ks to Tierra del Fuego in the south, and yet at its widest point it, in the Atacama Desert, is only 400ks across. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the towering Andes, this fascinating Latin American country is home to the world’s driest desert, arguably the continent’s most stunning national park, an impressive wine region and, on Chiloe Island, the home of the potato! An economically sound country that is fast become a first world nation, Chile has a huge amount to offer the modern traveller.
Unless coming in overland, most trips to Chile will start here in the nation’s capital, Santiago.
Although most guidebooks will tell you Santiago is not as exciting at Rio or as elegant and enchanting as Buenos Aires, and should be used only as a gateway to the rest of the country, I feel it is an interesting place to explore for a day or two. Like many large Latin American cities it suffers somewhat from schizophrenic urban design where the city’s impressive colonial past is often dwarfed and obscured by its more ugly modern present; tenement towers and, since its rise as a regional economic powerhouse – Chile has the highest GDP per capita in South America – glass fronted office blocks. But there are still some great sites to check out including the Plaza de Armas, the Palacio Modera, the city’s main museum, and the Mercado Central, where you can enjoy a delicious seafood lunch, beneath a roof that was actually made in Birmingham! Santiago also has some lovely hotels and is famous for its excellent dining.
But Santiago is unlikely to form the main reason for your visit to Chile, that is much more likely to lie either in the far north, in the Atacama region or in the far south in Patagonia.
From Santiago, and starting in the very south of the country in Chilean Patagonia, is Puerto Aranas, entry point for what is arguably the continents most impressive national park, Torres del Paine. Deriving its name from the bull-like horns of the park’s most impressive mountain, Torres del Paine covers a quarter of a million hectares, is home to some spectacular and varied accommodation, and is a great place to hike, horse ride or just enjoy the scenery.
ADD PLENTY OF SHOTS HERE
Moving north, we come to the beautiful Lake District around the towns of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. Here, up the Puelo River valley, you can do some wonderful horse riding as well as walking and kayaking. A short distance off the coast you also have Chiloe Island, which along with stunning coastal walks is also famous for being home of the potato. And further still off the coast, in fact more than 2,000 miles into the Pacific Ocean, is the extraordinary Easter Island… a land shrouded in mystery with its dramatic stone head carvings, Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands on the planet.
Heading further north other notable places are the beautiful coastal towns of La Serena and Valparaiso – just a stone’s throw from the capital Santiago – and the wine district of Coquimbo where some of the country’s leading wines are manufacture
And here in the far north of the country, lies the truly extraordinary Atacama Desert. Bordering Bolivia, Peru and Argentina, is a region that’s renowned as being the driest place on earth.
Sitting in the rain shadow of both the Andes and the Chilean Coastal Range, the Atacama Desert is renowned as being the driest place on earth. It is also the region that has been driest for longest, with some suggesting a continuous arid area here dating back at least three million years. Some of the soil has no life at all, a situation NASA has exploited to test instruments for Mars missions. And, due to its otherworldly landscapes, it has been used as a location on numerous space films including Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets.
Forming the northern chain of Chile’s ‘Ring of Fire’ the region is framed by a spectacular girdle of volcanoes and plethora of fascinating geographical phenomenon.
A country fast emerging as a first world nation, Chile offers today’s traveller a safe location with some great accommodation, fine dining and world-class wines. But first and foremost she offers some of the most varied and impressive landscapes anywhere on earth.
