Talking Fishing S07E09
What a great week of weather with summer like temperatures and great fishing conditions in many parts of Victoria. You’ll see the pictures of Swordfish again this week as the season starts to swing into top gear and the Victorian Capital of Swords Lakes Entrance features in Catch Of The Week tonight.
Then there’s the Kingfish in the Gippsland Lakes. And a great prawn run down there too, and a big fishing comp coming to town. Anyone would think things are okay down at Lakes, and yet according to a few locals, all is not well.

Sailing through The Rip
Coconut's First Extreme Sea Trial
April 20th, 2019: This is a video of Coconut getting caught outside Kawaihae Harbor on the Big Island in heavy winds on her fifth day of sea trials.
At one point, we had her at a 75-degree angle of heel, sailing right along on her pod (that would be the leeward bouyancy pod, the thing with the big square hatch in the middle and the round hatches on each end).
Holy wow was it exciting!
We decided not to sail her directly upwind at night through the 250-foot wide, rock-girdled harbor entrance into 30 knots of wind with higher gusts. We could see too many possible futures ending with our engineless Coconut on the rocks. Instead we sailed three miles away in the overpowering wind, and anchored off one of Hawaii's most beautiful white sand beaches.
The wind howled at the moon all night long through Coconut's rigging, the clouds sailed by overhead, and it was the most beautiful spot on earth for Coconut and her crew: me, Susanne, and Jack. We slept and dreamt of waves, wind, and salt water. And maybe a little bit about a hot meal; we ate cold stuff out of the cooler for dinner.
Unfortunately, we had no sleeping pads or cushions on the boat. Luckily, we DID have pillows and sleeping bags; so we spent an uncomfortable but warm night. The heavy wind quit about 4 in the morning. We upped anchor and sailed in 3 knots of wind back to the harbor.
The Hawaiian word for the strong wind we experienced that day is Kamakani ai Kanaka, which means the wind that eats people. This is because so many fishing canoes that went out in this bay in long years past met this wind, and got blown far out to sea, never returning to shore.
We salute those canoe sailors of long ago. Because, for just a while that day, we felt how it might have been if we hadn't been as well prepared as we were, in a boat as safe as Coconut is.

Open Forum 2012 - Water: Scarcity and Stress
01.28.2012
Water is tightly connected to the issues of food production, energy, climate change, economic growth and security. Sizable parts of the world already lack an adequate water supply, while population growth and improved living standards are expected to exacerbate the problem.
- How can governments and industry collaborate to ensure that water is distributed and used as efficiently as possible?
- What is the best way to tackle the interlinked issues of water, food, energy and security?
- How can consumers play a role in demanding and driving change?
The session includes:
Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of the Board, Nestlé, Switzerland
Martin Dahinden, Director-General, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Switzerland
John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado, USA
Sir Mohammad Jaafar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kuwaiti Danish Dairy Company, Kuwait

6/29/2013 Siesta Key, FL Rough Waters Sink Boat
High surf and rip tide conditions claim a 22 foot open bow boat on Siesta Key Beach, Sarasota FL.
A wave came over the bow and swamped and disabled the boat. The passengers escaped and made it to shore unharmed but the boat ran aground on Siesta Beach where it got pounded by waves from the strong SW wind. Ominious rain clouds and gusty SW winds prevailed as beach goes tried to get some beach time in before the expected heavy rains arrive.

The Noosa Bar Crossing. Filmed from the Groyne and Drone. Friday April 5, 2019.
Filmed the bar between 6.30am and 7.45am. Spotted the MakePeace Island barge heading out. Apparently sold and going north. Anyway, just got the drone up in time to film the crossing. Good conditions with the swell on the bar much reduced by the overnight southerly winds and being not far off the top of a 1.91m high tide. SCARED FOR MY LIFE! Sailing at 22 knots boat speed down HUGE waves (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 105
Yep, La Vagabonde reached 22.7 knots boat speed. We couldn’t believe it. With a max of 28 knots wind behind us from about 120 degrees, we surfed down one wave and then caught the next one in front of that. Before we knew it we were all looking at a 22.7 on the nav gear. I had a close eye on the bows making sure they weren't going to bury, they looked like they might but Riley promised me that it was normal and fine!! Matthieu says we could have got 25 knots so looks like Riley will be aiming for that next time… I never thought I’d go this fast on a sail boat. Still in recovery from this wild experience. Very happy to still be here to tell you this tale, to be alive and writing this very description is a miracle. I love you guys, Elayna.
