Claire & Steve in New Zealand - Part Three - Farewell Spit & Collingwood
Day two of the holiday and we drive to Collingwood on the western corner at the top of the South Island to go on the Farewell Spit Eco Tour. It means an early start as the tour leaves Collingwood at 9.30 and lasts most of the day. Farewell Spit is certainly a magical place which is protected by the Department of Conservation and only these official tours are allowed on the protected sand spit which extends 30km into the Tasman Sea. At the end of the spit is the lighthouse and a community of houses which once housed the lighthouse keepers and their families.
Visit for all the information about the tours and the spit.
We also visit as part of the tour Cape Farewell, the most Northerly point of the South Island before finishing the trip back in Collingwood.
An historic graveyard has a few revealing facts not just about the early settlers to the area, but the country as a whole as Collingwood was once planned as the capital of New Zealand.

Farewell Spit New Zealand
Sunrise at Farewell Spit and the surrounding area from over the receded ocean.
Farewell Spit is a narrow sand spit at the northern end of the Golden Bay, South Island of New Zealand. Known to the Māori as Tuhuroa, it runs eastwards from Cape Farewell, the island's northernmost point. It is located about 50 kilometres north of Takaka and 20 kilometers from Collingwood. The tiny settlement of Puponga stands close to the western (landward) end of the spit.
It forms the northern side of Golden Bay and is the longest sandspit in New Zealand, stretching for about 26 km above sea level and another 6 km underwater. The spit runs in from west to east, and is made from fine golden sand – as Cape Farewell to the west of the spit is mostly composed of late Cretaceous quartz sandstones, i.e. silica but with traces of other heavy minerals, garnet, ilmenite, magnetite and pyroxene. The erosion of the cliffs into fine sand carried on the sea currents creates Farewell spit further east.[1]
The northern side of the dunes are steeper and unstable being constantly exposed to the prevailing winds which average over 25 km/h. The southern side which faces Golden Bay is more stable and largely covered with vegetation. The tide here can recede as much as seven kilometers exposing some 80 square kilometers of mud flats; a rich feeding ground for the many sea birds in the area but also a trap for the frequently stranded whales
