Farewell Spit New Zealand
Sunrise at Farewell Spit and the surrounding area from over the receded ocean.
Farewell Spit is a narrow sand spit at the northern end of the Golden Bay, South Island of New Zealand. Known to the Māori as Tuhuroa, it runs eastwards from Cape Farewell, the island's northernmost point. It is located about 50 kilometres north of Takaka and 20 kilometers from Collingwood. The tiny settlement of Puponga stands close to the western (landward) end of the spit.
It forms the northern side of Golden Bay and is the longest sandspit in New Zealand, stretching for about 26 km above sea level and another 6 km underwater. The spit runs in from west to east, and is made from fine golden sand – as Cape Farewell to the west of the spit is mostly composed of late Cretaceous quartz sandstones, i.e. silica but with traces of other heavy minerals, garnet, ilmenite, magnetite and pyroxene. The erosion of the cliffs into fine sand carried on the sea currents creates Farewell spit further east.[1]
The northern side of the dunes are steeper and unstable being constantly exposed to the prevailing winds which average over 25 km/h. The southern side which faces Golden Bay is more stable and largely covered with vegetation. The tide here can recede as much as seven kilometers exposing some 80 square kilometers of mud flats; a rich feeding ground for the many sea birds in the area but also a trap for the frequently stranded whales

Most beautiful beach in New Zealand, WHARARIKI BEACH! Vlog 2
The wild northwestern coast of the South Island is the perfect place for a day adventure. In this area you'll find the Farewell Spit, with it's distinctive Kiwi shape curving round Golden Bay; the massive cliffs at Cape Farewell, and the one of a kind Wharariki Beach.
The north-facing sandy beach is accessible only via a 20-minute walking track from the end of Wharariki Road. The road end is approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the nearest settlement, the small village of Puponga. A camping ground is located along Wharariki Road, but the area surrounding the beach is devoid of any development. Wharariki Beach is bordered by Puponga Farm Park, with the wider area more or less surrounded by the northern end of Kahurangi National Park.
The beach is flanked to the east and west by cliffs, but due to the flat topology of the area behind it, the beach area and the grassy dunes behind it are quite exposed to winds.
Wharariki Beach is perhaps best known for the Archway Islands, featured frequently in photos in New Zealand landscape calendars.
The Archway Islands are a group of four rock stacks or small islands, with even the largest one of them measuring only about 300 by 200 metres (980 by 660 ft).
The largest of the islands is closest to the mainland and adjoins Wharariki Beach; it is generally not cut off by the sea. The second island lies about 150 metres (490 ft) offshore and is relatively flat and vegetated. The remaining two islands are typical rock stacks, with the larger one 66 metres (217 ft) tall and containing two natural rock arches, giving rise to the naming of the group of islands.

Be prepared for wind - when it starts to blow you can not only feel it but see it too!
Wharariki will blow you away. Literally. Everything at Wharariki is big. Big waves, big cliffs, big sand dunes, big caves, and even bigger winds! Part of the appeal to me is how remote it all feels, but it is only one hours drive from Takaka, followed by a 30 minute farm walk.

From the car park at the end of Wharariki road, it is a 20 minute walk over rolling farm-land to Wharariki Beach, with its amazing sand dunes, caves and off-shore islands, According to Maori tradition, this is o te wairua o nga tangata o te Waipounamu, the place from which the spirits depart. North Island has a similar departure point for spirits on its northwestern tip. If you die on the South Island, this is your jumping off place to the life-beyond-death.
