Saving Farina - South Australia's Ghost Town
In the middle of the South Australian Outback, Lies the abandoned town of Farina. Left to ruins over a 100 years ago, but now thanks to some overly enthusiastic grey nomad volunteers. The town is slowly beginning to be rebuilt one stone at a time.
This story was broadcast on Channel Seven Adelaide - Today Tonight back in 2009.
This film won me a Gold Award at the 2009 Australian Cinematography Society awards SA / WA branch.

Farina Ruins Campground - South Australia
The Farina Ruins campground in South Australia is a fantastic place with plenty of room for and small set ups. There are donkey boilers for the showers and just a short walk up the hill adjacent to the campground is a lovely war memorial and lookout. It's also just a short walk to the ruins which has a wealth of historic value. It is 25 kms to Lyndhurst from here. This campground is a great for a stopover or weekend stay. You can buy firewood on arrival and there are flushing toilets.

Farina - South Australia Outback
Farina is a town in the north of South Australia. Previously the rail head of the Ghan, the town now lies in Ruin. A small group of people have set about slowly restoring the town, beginning with the bakery that I was lucky to see open when I traveled there and grabbed a great pasty, I highly recommend checking it out if you are in the area. Further restorations are on going, but get back to me when one of the old breweries or pubs is open for business!

Old Tailem Town. South Australia.
Old Tailem town pioneer village, South Australia (2011).
First established in 1982, Old Tailem Town is now Australia's largest pioneer village, visited by tourists all over the world!
Come for an hour or a day, have a cup of tea or coffee with the friendly staff and see what life was like for the settlers of South Australia from 1860 - 1960. There are over a hundred and ten buildings for you to visit, all furnished within their periods in their most natural locations. Many of the buildings were transported in one piece from their original locations, while others were taken apart plank by plank and rebuilt in Old Tailem Town. Most of the buildings are over one hundred years old and are the same in appearance as they were when they were first built. They are all furnished with original artifacts as if they were being lived in a century ago. Shops are stocked with original items, packets and hardware. The emporium is over one hundred and twenty feet long and has four different departments with flying fox, money exchanges and the picture theatre is one hundred years old and houses sixty-five year old working projectors and is fully functional as a theatre with seventy seats. We have a collection of antique speed-boats, dating from 1905, including the worlds first hydroplane, made by Thorney Croft and his first four cylinder engine, known as 'experimental one'. There is a huge stationary engine display, which is one of the biggest you'll ever see. We have a collection of antique fire engines with one of the biggest mobile ladders in the sourthern hemisphere. There are stables which house clydesdale horses. The railway has nineteen carriages and is over a kilometer long.
The town has thiry shops, catering for everything imaginable. The village is now at the stage where it's hard to think of what else to create in a town of its era.
Our oldest building is a ticket office from the first exhibition grounds in Adelaide and it dates from 1870, along with the school that dates from 1881. Most buildings were built before the turn of the twentieth century. Overseas visitors to the village are amazed that such a place exists! If you really want to see how the past was, this is the place to come and experience it!

Farina historic ruins South Australia, Adventure with Bernie.
On this Adventure with Bernie I explore the historic ruins in the South Australian town of Farina.
First settled in 1878 Farina grew to reach a peak population of approximately 600 in the late 1800s. In its heyday, the town had two hotels (the Transcontinental and the Exchange) and an underground bakery, a bank, two breweries, a general store, an Anglican church, five blacksmiths, a school and a brothel. In 1909, 1,143 kilograms (2,520 lb) iron meteorite was discovered north-east of the town.
Today just the ruins remain and the cemetery. The wind was blowing hard on my trip there with dust and sand flying every which way. Mouth closed and eyes squinting were the best forms of defence.
