This unique 100ft Tower is Faringdon’s icon and the last major folly to be built in England. A folly tower is a tower that constructed primarily for decoration. Hailed as 'Britain's finest 20th century Folly Tower' and 'One of the most important follies in Britain', iIt sits on Folly Hill, within a charming 4 acre, circular woodland of Scots Pine and Broadleaf Trees, some which are than 200 years old.
Whilst walking on Folly Hill in the early 1930s, Lord Berners flippantly remarked to his companion Robert Heber-Percy that “this Hill needs a Tower”. This was overheard, and wild rumours flew, leading to fierce local objections. Amused, Berners decided to tease his objectors and, wittily defeating all opposition, he obtained his planning permission with the proviso that the Tower could only be higher than the surrounding trees by three feet.
The Hill existed long before the Folly Tower was built, because of it's location and position within the Vale of the White horse, it made it an ideal location to look out for invading troops during various wars.

Cotswold River Walk Buscot to Kelmscot
Another Cotswold river walk, and we return to the Thames from Buscot to Kelmscot, but starting in Kelmscot, which means a walk through fields and meadows to Buscot. No problem then except I think the walk guide needs an update, missing trees and styles add to the excitement, but don’t detract from a beautiful country walk. Buscot, pretty as ever and full of interest, not only as a lock on the mighty Thames, but also a sluice system to maintain the river height to the west. There are both the original system and the more modern automated version. The return walk besides the river is magical, both calming and exciting somehow. Second World War blockhouses show how seriously the threat of invasions was taken in the second world unpleasantness, but don’t detract from the majesty of the surroundings. Enjoy.
