Tips on how to identify if a painting is old and original or a copy. Dr. Mark Sublette owner of Medicine Man Gallery shares his twenty five years of experience in the art world on what to look for. Examples of older paintings and what are keys to be looking for before you ever buy.

How to tell if a painting is old or a reproduction
I look at artwork every day of my life – often to buy and people need my advice of what their piece is, and if its original or not. Today I want to talk about: how do you tell an original piece of artwork, and I specifically kind of hone in on paintings, because what I see all the time are pieces that are reproductions or prints or flat-out fakes and frauds. So, some of the little highlights that you need to know if you're looking to purchase a piece of artwork or if you have a piece of artwork if it's original is: 1) if it's supposedly old and has a date on it, let's say it says 1923, well it should look like it's old. You should turn over the back of the painting, and look. The back of the painting, quite frankly, is going to tell you as much as the front of the painting. If the canvas is very white, and the little sticks that you'll see in the corners that are the little spacer or
the bars that you see around the edge of the painting, if those are very white and have not oxidized, it's not old – it's a new piece, and it's probably jaclay. A jaclay is a copy of an original oil painting piece of artwork. They can be very nice; they can have value, but they're a copy; a photographic copy put on canvas, and the idea is to make it look like the original. And quite frankly, from a photograph when I get them on the internet sometimes you can't tell because it can be a Charlie Russell, and it looks like a Charlie Russell because “Hey, guess what?” It is, but it's a copy; it's a jaclay. So, when you look at the piece in person, you should be able to see individual brushstrokes and thickness and texture to the paint. Those jacylays will often have the brushstrokes, but you'll see kind of a sheen on the top that really just doesn't look right. And then if you turn it around on the back you'll see staples where the canvas has been stapled to the stretcher bars. The stretcher bars, which are the foundation bars, will be. The canvas will be white, (and) there's no oxidation. Charlie Russell was painting at the turn of the century – if you've got that time frame, things are going to happen. Also, the frame will tell you something. If you look at a frame and it is got chips – again, the wood is oxidized, and you may see different holes where it's been used in the past; look at these things. If they look old and feel old and maybe even smell old; if they've been in a smoker’s home for 20-30 years, you'll smell the nicotine. Use your senses, and if that little voice says, “Something's wrong.” Guess what? It is. So, you can't just go buy a history, because I can tell you this: after twenty years of doing this, histories are very easy to fabricate, and people do this, or they just, you know, (have a) family lore (that) says, “Oh, this has been in our family for a hundred years.” Well, the realities of it, (is) take that into consideration, but it's probably the last thing. First, use your own eyes (and) your own senses. Does this feel like it's a painting that's old or not? Remember, people do make frauds and fakes. So, if you're buying older works you have to (and it looks old – well, it could be an old painting that they've signed a name on. I see all the time old paintings where somebody's put Maynard Dixon) you have to know your subject matter, and if it's obviously not his work, not his signature, not his style, then it's not right. The last thing I go on (with) a painting is the signature. That's the very last thing that I take into consideration because the signature is easier to fake than style, composition, and the way the painting looks like. You know, they can be a good forger of the name Maynard Dixon, but they can't do the palette; they can't do the structure
or the composition of the painting. Even if it's an old painting, it just doesn't hack it. So, when you look at these things, be very critical. Look for age, especially on old pieces; they should have a certain sensibility and if they don't, get an expert to look at it before you ever purchase it.

Kenny Schachter - Artist, Writer & Curator
BFA Fine Arts presents artist, writer and curator Kenny Schachter, who will speak about his work and his many contributions to exhibitions, publications and editorials over the years.
London-based Kenny Schachter has been curating contemporary art exhibits in museums and galleries and teaching art history and economics for nearly 30 years; presently, he is teaching in the graduate department of the University of Zurich. He has lectured internationally, been the recipient of a Rockefeller-supported grant in Mexico and contributed to books on Paul Thek, Zaha Hadid, Vito Acconci and Sigmar Polke/Gerhard Richter. Kenny Schachter has a regular column on Artnet.com in addition to writing widely for various international publications. He had a retrospective of his art at Joel Mesler’s Rental Gallery in New York in the summer of 2018, curated an exhibit at Simon Lee Gallery in London in fall 2018 and had a one-person show at Kantor Gallery, LA, in February 2019. Upcoming projects include a solo exhibit at Blum & Poe in Tokyo and a keynote speech at for the Art Appraisers Association of America. Schachter has been profiled in The New York Times Magazine (cover story, September 1996), and London's Observer, Independent and Telegraph. He deals in international art from Impressionist and Modernism to the art and design of today.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Yorkshire Sculpture Park
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an open-air gallery in West Bretton near Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England, showing work by British and international artists, including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. The park's collection of works by Moore is one of the largest open-air displays of his bronzes in Europe. The sculpture park occupies the parkland of Bretton Hall and straddles the border of West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, opened in 1977, was the UK's first sculpture park based on the temporary open air exhibitions organised in London parks from the 1940s to 1970s by the Arts Council and London County Council (and later Greater London Council). The 'gallery without walls' has a changing exhibition programme, rather than permanent display as seen in other UK sculpture parks such as Grizedale Forest.
The park is situated in the grounds of Bretton Hall, an 18th-century estate which was a family home until the mid 20th century when it became Bretton Hall College. Follies, landscape features and architectural structures from the 18th century can be seen around the park including the deer park and deer shelter (recently converted by American sculptor James Turrell into an installation), an ice house, and a camellia house. Artists working at YSP, such as Andy Goldsworthy in 2007, take their inspiration from its architectural, historical or natural environment.
Since the 1990s, Yorkshire Sculpture Park has made use of indoor exhibition spaces, initially a Bothy Gallery (in the curved Bothy Wall) and a temporary tent-like structure called the Pavilion Gallery. After an extensive refurbishment and expansion, YSP has added an underground gallery space in the Bothy garden, and exhibition spaces at Longside (the hillside facing the original park). Its programme consists of contemporary and modern sculpture (from Rodin and Bourdelle through to living artists). British sculpture is well represented in the past exhibition programme and semi-permanent installations. Many British sculptors famous in the 1950s and 1960s, but since forgotten, have been the subject of solo exhibitions at YSP including Lynn Chadwick, Austin Wright, Phillip King, Eduardo Paolozzi, Hans Josephsohn, and Kenneth Armitage. Exhibitions tend to be monographic - rather than group or thematic.

FAILE: Wishing on You by FAILE
Broadway Plaza 42nd-43rd Streets | August 17 - September 1, 2015
Brooklyn-based artist collaboration FAILE brings FAILE: Wishing on You, an installation reimagining Asian prayer wheels in the context of Times Square’s kaleidoscopic history, to the Broadway plaza between 42nd and 43rd Streets from August 17 – September 1, 2015. It was unveiled on Monday August 17th at 11:00am. The installation is presented in collaboration with FAILE’s exhibition, FAILE: Savage/Sacred Young Minds, running at the Brooklyn Museum from July 10- October 4, 2015.
Drawing on European, Asian, and American traditions, FAILE has re-conceived sacred forms from around the world into highly interactive public sculptures, allowing them to build on a longstanding practice of inviting play and contemplation from the audience. Emblazoned with FAILE’s visual language, Wishing on You explores contemporary patterns of consumption, desire, and myth-making. Artists Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller are using this piece, their largest to date, to re-imagine Times Square - a sacred American landscape known both for bright lights and the gathering of many communities.
The piece asks viewers to think about what spirituality and desire look like in the context of affluent global cities and create a place of spontaneity and shared experience. Even the movement of the sculpture, with each turn of the wheel powering the neon lights on the piece, is an act of collaboration and hope rather than passive viewing.
