Kalamazoo Beer Week begins Saturday
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) Craft beer lovers, listen up!The fourth annual Kalamazoo Beer Week kicks off Friday night and there is a lot you need to know before tapping in to all the fun. There are nearly 200 events you can attend over the next nine days.Every single event focuses on craft beer and its appreciation so it's going to be pretty fun for the craft beer lovers here, says Anne Drummond, organizer of Kalamazoo Beer Week. It could be a tap takeover where the brewers are there to describe all the different beers to the patrons. It could be sampling flights so smaller portions of a number of different beers from the same brewery. Or it could be an event focused on a style of beer, so porters for instance, try eight different porters from around the state of Michigan. Zazios is one of many venues participating in Kalamazoo Beer Week, hosting three Chefs Table events where chefs and brewers join forces for the week.We are focusing on beer dinners. I mean, I love craft beer by itself but something awesome happens when you pair craft beer with food, says Autumn Fromm, Zazios events coordinator. Its food that's prepared directly in front of you course by course. You get to hear the chef talk about the food, the brewer talk about the beer. It's a really unique experience.Other Kalamazoo Beer Week events include Bowl with a Brewer, screenings of craft beer films, even a brew battle. Each location designs something that works best for them, Drummond notes. And not everything is a paid event. Many of our retail tastings are complimentary so you can try something new and learn something new about craft beer.Organizers hope those that participate in Kalamazoo Beer will be safe in how they consume craft beer. They urge anyone planning on drinking alcohol to always have a designated driver. In addition, on every beer week flyer there's a QR code you can scan with your smart phone that will help you find a taxi home. For a full schedule of events, click here: kalamazoobeerweek.com

Momentum Program helps residents become employed
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Last fall we introduced you to a new program designed to help improve the unemployment rate in Kalamazoo's Edison Neighborhood.
Friday a second session of the class is graduating.
A room of students has new hope after 10 weeks of classes in the momentum program.
In its second session, the Edison Neighborhood program is working to get residents jobs.
I've been jobless for a year now and I felt like this program has given me the skills and abilities that I need to get a job, said Dawn Worrell.
The program goes beyond resume writing and interview skills, teaching participants character development.
Right now they are teamed up with 20 local employers and next week the students are guaranteed interviews.
A lot of the folks that come to us have little to no work history so they don't have anything to put on a resume. Or they have a criminal background and so they panic when they have to fill that part our on an application, said Momentum Director Tracy Kinney.
The first round of Momentum graduated six people and three of them had jobs by the time it ended.
This session has eight people graduating. One has a job already and other seven have interviews next week.
Our minimum qualification is you have to want a job. You've got to be hungry. Tunis is a long program. 10 weeks is a long time to commit your life to. You have to be hungry, said Kinney.
For those participating, this class is a stepping stone to a brighter future.
I'm hoping people see this and give me a chance, said Kinney.

Demolition of East Campus to begin
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Demolition of the historic East Campus at Western Michigan University is set to begin this week, possibly as soon as Monday. The area is fenced off now and West Hall appears to be gutted and ready to be taken down.It is expected to be the first building to fall, with others on East Campus to follow.Western Michigan University officials plan on saving and renovating East Hall and turning it into an alumni center, but they say renovating the other buildings would be too expensive. All weekend protestors were out, trying to raise awareness and hoping university leaders will have a change of heart. They say the university was founded there and this would be a huge loss for the campus.Once you tear down history, you can't rebuild it. Western was founded right here where we're standing right now, said protestor Nicole Thebo. These buildings are a huge landmark. We need to save them, we have to preserve what is left. Leaders here at Western say while they are going to renovate East Hall, the other buildings are simply too expensive to maintain. We are told demolition is scheduled for this week, possibly beginning as soon as sun up Monday.
Special Report: Braking the Limit
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Speeding in school zones--it's a law too many drivers break each and every day. Most of them get away with it, and never come close to hitting a child--but one day, they might. And as Newschannel 3 learned, just a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death.25 miles an hour. That's the posted speed in most school zones, typically one hour before and one hour after school. But what if you're just not paying attentionwhat if you're driving 35 or even 45 miles an hour, and a child runs in front of your car?In our special report, Braking the Limit, we show you just how deadly that can be.We see it all too oftenand every once in awhile, it becomes an even bigger tragedy.A 14-year-old honor roll student was struck and killed by a dump truck on her way to school, said. Deputy Larry Czarnowski, with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department of one such incident. It can happen in an instant. A child hit and killed in a school zone. It's probably the most horrible thing that a police officer ever has to do. It's just devastating. You know you feel the same emotions that they do and you don't even know them, Czarnowski said. Today, with as many drivers as we have, there's a lot of them that are distracted and they're doing a lot of other things, you know. Texting while they're driving as well as not paying attention to what's going on around them, he added. And some are just speeding. For some, they're late for work. Others late getting the kids to school, and some are just not paying attention. But if you think your speed doesn't make a difference, think again. We ran a test with Sgt. Jim Campbell, an accident reconstructionist with the Michigan State Police, to measure stop times. They were right here. So this is where they would have been when we hit them and that's how far we actually pushed them, he said after one test which would show some chilling results in real life.'They' are the kids that just darted out in front of your car. And your car just pushed them a full eight feet. That was only at 35 miles an hour...10 miles faster than the school zone speed limit.Even that speedeven though we were very slow when we hit 'em, it's going to be enough to cause enough damage to possibly kill them, Sgt. Campbell said. And the results are even more devastating when you tack on another 10 miles an hour.People think that as their speed doubles that their stopping distance will double but actually it quadruples, Sgt. Campbell explained. That's because it's not just about slamming your foot on the brake; you also have to factor in perception and reaction. Why do i have to stop? What's going on in front of me? And by the time you figure out that something's going to happen, you've already gone through all your distance and now you're going to hit somebody, he said. So what about at 25 miles an hourthe speed we're supposed to drive? We stopped just in time.So should drivers get a break if they're caught flying through a school zone? Deputy Czarnowski doesn't think so.He's got children too, and he would be the first one to say, oh my gosh, you weren't doing enough cause my child got hurt you know crossing at the school there and got hit by a speeder, Carnowski said.Or worse...The thought of hitting a child should be enough to deter you from speeding, but if it's not, think about it this way: you could get hit with a major fine.If a cop catches you speeding through a school zone, the ticket is double. If you'd like to know if your tires are in the best shape they can be for these situations, or just as we head into winter, click here.
