Summary: The first message from the panel discussion, voiced by Stage One’s Chief Executive Joseph Smith, was to ‘just raise the fucking money’. Although this raised a laugh from delegates, the point was clear and continued in the vein of the morning’s presentations and provocations. The most important thing, many of the speakers agreed, is to find the money that will support the art, whether this comes from commercial investment or Arts Council grants. Smith also reiterated the point that ‘no one invests in theatre who doesn’t love theatre passionately’, echoing Julius Green’s provocation.
Elsewhere on the panel, Senior Relationship Manager Peter Staves offered the Arts Council perspective, while Esmée Fairbairn’s Trupti Patel described how the Foundation’s social investment fund helps subsidised venues to achieve commercial transfers of successful productions and then use that income for other projects. There was also much discussion of crowd-funding, which is fast becoming a popular new source of funding for both big and small theatre projects. Virginia Buckley, Co-Founder of CultureCrowd, suggested that crowd-funding occupies the middle ground between commercial and subsidised, but stressed that it should not be a substitute for other forms of funding. Finally, one comment from Farnham Maltings’ Director Gavin Stride resonated particularly with the theme of the day: ‘compete less, collaborate more’.

greenhouse - Men and Girls Dance
Quarterhouse and Fevered Sleep worked together to research a new, dance-based performance piece with 12 girls aged 8-11 from the Folkestone area.
The project reached out to local groups that aren’t currently engaging with the venue by placing them at the heart of the creative process at a very early stage in its development.
Men and Girls Dance, conceived by Fevered Sleep, will be performed by a group of male professional dancers (aged 35+) and a group of pre-adolescent girls (aged 8-11) who dance as a hobby. The company are fundamentally interested in what happens when two groups who are best seen as kept apart come together and perform in a public space.
Men and Girls Dance will be performed in partnership with local venues in unusual spaces where dance classes and other gatherings of people take place, such as church and village halls, community centres or sports halls. Male professional dancers will perform the entire tour but girl performers will be recruited locally and perform in their area only. This method of engaging new audiences as part of the creation and presentation of the work will embed it deeply in each location in which it is developed and performed, leaving a legacy for the participants and their families, partner venues and communities, as well as Fevered Sleep.

Valentine Davies' classic holiday tale has been described by many as a twentieth century Christmas Carol, with its warm, funny story of an old man who insists that he actually is Santa Claus. In its own inimitable style, Farnham Maltings has transformed everyone's favourite Christmas story into two hours of magical, rough edged theatre complete with Santa, Thanksgiving parade and newly fallen snow...
Toured throughout November and December in 2009 and 2010 to village halls across England and Wales.
Miracle on 34th Street was a Farnham Maltings Production adapted by Mary Elliot Nelson, directed by Gavin Stride and designed by Mary Drummond.
Farnham Maltings Great Hall redevelopment 2015 timelapse
Over the Summer of 2015, Farnham Maltings underwent large-scale redevelopment in The Great Hall, the main performance space in the building. The two month project saw the old seating replaced and the construction of a state-of-the-art projection suite as well as the ability to adapt the space into a more intimate theatre studio space.
The Director of Farnham Maltings, Gavin Stride said 'It will mean that we will be able to accommodate more events, will be able to show a greater range and scale of contemporary theatre and, by using it more, we will become more resilient.'

Time to Remember 2016: An event to commemorate the first two minute silence, May 1916
Back in May, Farnham remembered the world's first two minutes' silence which took place on Castle Street in May 1916 with the Time to Remember project. Farnham Maltings helped to organise a special event which featured a military procession and a moving commemoration on the exact spot of the original event before hosting a May Day community fair in Gostrey Meadow.
To celebrate the conclusion of the project we will be holding a free event in the Museum of Farnham's Garden Gallery to showcase some of these stories and recordings as well as to present the full length film created as part of the project inspired by Farnham's Remembrance story.
The event takes place on Sat 12 November 2016, at the Museum of Farnham between 10am - 4pm with the screening at 2.30pm. More details:

Robin’s first new stand up show in three years is a clash of the two cultures, a joyous romp through his favourite artists and strangest scientific ideas. From the work of Stanley Spencer to Niels Bohr, it is 90 minutes fizzing with ideas about creativity in science and art, as well as asking why we believe we see what we see and why we believe what we believe.

MAMIL Cycling : Christmas Pie Trail Guildford to Farnham
If you have a gravel bike and like cycling on trails then this ride is fantastic to make the most of your cyclocross bike.
Running from Guildford to Farnham and along the north side of the Hogs Back's the ride starts with some lovely off-road tracks taking you along gravel paths that are cushioned by undergrowth either side. On the whole, the first leg feels like a false downward flat which means you can pick up a fair amount of speed if you are wanting to push it. about 1/3rd of the way through the trail you convert to a bit of concrete road, before returning to more trail riding and some lovely stretches to make the most of your gravel bike.
The trail starts in Broadstreet Common near Pinks Hill and runs through to Claygate Copse before arriving at Flexford and Christmas Pie itself. At times you can lose the small Christmas Pie signs that guide your way, so keep your eyes peeled.
From there it's on to Ash Green, along the old railway line and into Tongham where the ride takes you along Grange Road and then a double cross over the A31 where it meets the A331 (watch for cars here) and then through Runfold and into Farnham arriving on the Shepherd and Flock Roundabout.
It's an exhilarating bicycle ride that is great as a solo challenge but also serves as a really fun family cycling ride, 90% devoid of traffic, although you will need to keep your wits about you for horse riders, dog walkers and joggers on the trail sections.
