Město Farsund bylo založeno jako obec 1. ledna 1838, ačkoli bylo už uznané jako obchodní centrum v roce 1795. Současná obec Farsund byla založena 1. ledna 1965 když venkovské obce Herad , Lista , a Spind byly sloučeny s městem Farsund.Obec je pojmenovaná po malém ostrově Farøy, který leží v úzkém průlivu Lyngdalsfjorden, který prochází městem. Jméno ostrova pochází z norského slova daleko který znamená “cestování” nebo “cestu” (podobný anglickému slovu rozloučení znamenající “dobrou cestu”). Posledním prvkem je sund což znamená „ úžina “ nebo „ zvuk
