Taobao women's presentations at Shanghai Fashion Week F/W 2012
Taobao, China's largest online shopping mall, presented a show at Shanghai Fashion Week F/W 2012, on April 12, featuring a half dozen designers. These are the women's segments, featuring designs by Artka, 7GE7GE/Sugargirl and Zimmur. Video by Nadine Kam; nkam@staradvertiser.com;

C/U of a chair with various brightly coloured Chinese silk robes on it; panning left to show a man getting up from beside the clothes and putting on a yellow and blue silk skirt; tilt down slightly to show his feet in Chinese slippers standing on a little mat on the carpet. Commentator tells us these are 18th Century dragon robes seen in the South London home of Col Ling Soo.
M/S of Col Ling Soo putting on a sable-lined red Empress robe from his collection and doing up the buttons; C/U as he fastens the belt around his waist; a fabric holder for silver-tipped chopsticks hangs from the belt. C/Us as he folds a finely embroidered flat purse featuring animals over the belt.
M/S as Col Ling Soo turns to a table, puts on a Chinese hat with peacock plume and some beads. He sits down and starts to fan himself. C/U of his face, tilt down to show in detail the intricate and colourful embroidery of his robe. Commentator tells us Col Ling Soo, or 'Happy Spirit', is not really Chinese; he is better known as Herbert Collings, President and founder of the Magic Circle, but also a keen student of Chinese art. He uses these robes in his performances of oriental magic.
M/S as Col Ling Soo takes another robe from the chair and shows it to a woman on his right, who is also dressed in a Chinese robe. C/Us as they examine an embroidered dragon on the red silk robe, and an embroidered panel on another robe, featuring a stag and heron.
Note: on file is a leaflet about Herbert J Collings' stage act, 'Costumes and Customs of Old China'; a little cigarette card-type photo of Col Ling Soo (in full costume); and amusing cameraman's notes (by 'Too-Long-Till'!).

MANGO SS '09 - New flagship store in Shanghai
WE PRESENT OUR NEW FLAGSHIP STORE IN SHANGHAI, ON THE MOST POPULAR PEDESTRIAN STREET IN THE CITY
Last Thursday night, on 12th March, we presented our flagship store on the bustling Nanjing Road. Not only is it the most popular shopping street in Shanghai, it is in fact the worlds busiest shopping street and has been the centre of commerce in Shanghai for more than a century.
Isak Halfon, MANGOs Expansion Director and Associate Partner, who hosted the event, declared: We are very proud to be able to open this flagship store here in Shanghai. China is a very important market for MANGO.
The evening was not to be missed by the most important faces in Shanghais fashion and social circles, who were present at the event. Crowds gathered outside the store to watch invited guests such as Antonio Segura, Spanish Consul General in Shanghai, Taiwanese TV host Wu Pei Ci and top Chinese fashion model Shi Zhou Liang. Also present were many of the major Shanghai and Beijing media corporations and key members of the Spanish media who were given a sneak preview of the new store.
Wu Pei Ci, dressed in MANGO for the occasion, opened the ceremony declaring that MANGO means fashion and this is what we want to share with you today, in this nice environment and making sure that you enjoy the party together with us. Shi Zhou Liang, dressed in an outfit from our Spring/Summer 09 collection, explained that MANGO is full of sunshine and energy. It brings Spains local characteristics to Shanghai.
Special guest DJ Ben Huang supplied music throughout the store as guests enjoyed MANGO cocktails created especially for the occasion. During the sneak preview, several models showed off the most elegant MANGO outfits for the current Spring/Summer 09 season.
Following the store opening party, elite VIP guests gathered in the new Park Hyatt private dining area located on the 93rd floor of the brand-new, world-renowned Shanghai World Financial Center, the highest tower in China. In a sumptuous private dining hall, a fabulous dinner was served and our special guests had the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views over the Pudong and Puxi skyline.
The new flagship store is over 700 m2 and is located in the shopping mall Plaza 353 that was originally constructed in the 1930s to house important public offices. The mall is located on the citys main avenue, Nanjing Road. Recently restored in order to conserve its unique Art Déco architecture, the building is an emblematic location of great cultural significance in Shanghai.
After opening this store, we have also opened a corporate store at Shanghais Super Brand Mall, in the heart of the booming Pudong business district.

Shanghai ‘Boy Toy’ Private Club for Wealthy Chinese Women Gains Internet Fame After Police Bust
Link:
A viral photo has exposed a new vice proliferating in major Chinese cities.
A Jan. 25 post on Sina Weibo, a Chinese social media platform similar to Twitter, attracted people’s attention.
The photo showed a big pile of luxury gifts, along with a brand-new Audi car. The Weibo user who posted the photo said he was a male escort at the White Horse private club in Shanghai.
The gifts were from a wealthy female client, in celebration of his 28th birthday, according to the post.
Chinese netizens dug into details about the White Horse private club, which goes by the English name Perfect Space.
On its Weibo account, the club said all their employees are handsome men, including male models from Europe and North America. It is located on Shimen Road in Jing’an district, one of Shanghai’s busiest neighborhoods.
The private club was revealed to be for female clients only. The daily revenue of each VIP room is around one million yuan ($148,000), while tips to their male escorts can reach 10,000 yuan per client, according to one of the club’s recruitment ads posted on Weibo.
The male escort’s Weibo post was soon removed, but the photo of the gifts were reposted by different social media.
Several hours later, a video spread on social media, claiming to show the aforementioned male escort being beaten by the husband of the female client who gifted the expensive presents.
According to the video post, the husband was extremely angry when he found out that his wife had used his money to buy gifts for the male escort at White Horse club. The husband then hired thugs to break the escort’s leg.
Because the video was soon deleted, these details could not be independently verified.
Chinese state-run newspaper Beijing Youth Daily interviewed several employees of the White Horse club to investigate the matter. The staff said it’s common that the club’s male escorts receive luxury gifts from their clients. But no staff would confirm that the video is real. They said some of the male escort employees were detained by police.
On Jan. 26, the White Horse club closed, according to Chinese media reports. Shanghai police told the public that the club was closed for an investigation.
On Jan. 27, a Weibo account belonging to the user “Bai Xiaosheng” posted a video showing a roomful of men gathered inside the club on June 21, 2018, as they were preparing for the work day.
Bai alleged in his post that the club’s parent company, Noah’s Ark Group, actually runs several brothels across China, including the cities of Chongqing, Shenzhen, and Fuzhou.
On the official website of Noah’s Ark Group, which describes itself as an operator of bars, nightclubs, karaoke lounges, and other entertainment venues, there are promotional articles about its employees, who are shown in photos scantily clad: shirtless men and women in short skirts.
