Timkat (Epiphany) in Gondar, Ethiopia
Timkat (Epiphany) is one of the most important religion event for Ethiopian Christian. The most spectacular celebrations take place in Gondar and Addis Abeba.
Timkat is happy event with religion processions, singing, dancing and jumping into blessed water of Fasiladas' Bath (Gondar). The ceremony replicates Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River and is an important renewal of faith.

Emperor Fasilides built these public baths for people to celebrate Timket - the Epiphany for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. These baths are still in use today.

Chalachew Bantiwalu (likes to called Charles) is a fantastic tour guide born & educated in Gondar. He has a an in-depth knowledge of local history & often contextualizes his narrative against world historic events.

Royal Bath of Fasilides, Gondar
This is the Royal bath of Fasilides in Gondar, Ethiopia.
A big rectangular swimming pool with a little palace standing in the middle.
This 17th century bath is still used once a year for the Timkat celebration.
We also visited a nearby mausoleum for a horse.

Fasilides , also known as Fasil or Basilide, was emperor of Ethiopia from 1632 to 18 October 1667, and a member of the Solomonic dynasty.His throne name was ʿAlam Sagad , meaning to whom the world bows.He was the son of Emperor Susenyos I and Empress Sultana Mogassa, born at Magazaz in Shewa before 10 November 1603.His paternal grandfather's name was also Fasilides.
