Our Underground Home in Coober Pedy
An Underground Day - tour Faye's Home
Coober Pedy is a very interesting city in the far end north of South Australia (outback). It is mostly underground, looks like Mars, and it has been the set for Mad Max and other movies. After sleeping underground and listening to strange noises through the night - we went touring around the town and ended up at Faye's home. This lady dig her own house for 10 years and her story is so inspirational that I felt that would add massively to the living on the edge series. I hope you enjoy it.

Underground Home Coober Pedy
A demonstration home for tourists, but similar to many actual homes in Coober Pedy. Made out of former opal mining tunnels, enlarged to make rooms. Cool in Summer, warm in Winter, quiet, away from the desert winds.

These homes are called dugouts and the houses are fashioned in such a way due to scorching temperature during day time. This underground town was established in 1915 following the discovery of opal there. It's interesting to know that ninety five per cent of the world's opal comes from this area.

Day 50 - 21st October 2017
We rented a campervan in Cairns and set off on a 2 and a half month road trip around Australia. It’s a heck of a long way (20,000 km!!) but these videos will show what we got up to on the road!
Today marked 50 DAYS on the road, and it was awesome to spend it in such a unique and crazy place. We explored the town, found some opal, went to a drive in movie and even stayed in an underground home!

What to See:
o It is centre of Centre Australia
o There is Emu park at Erldunda.
o Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park

o Walking in Uluru and Kata Tjuta National park.
o Capture the Perfect Sunset
Remarks:
o Poisonous Snakes are common in this place. Be careful.
o Fuel is very expensive. Almost double the price compare to other places.
o Nearest grocery shop is in Alice springs, which is around 200Km away.

Coober Pedy: Living underground - Domain
Coober Pedy is a different world.
In fact, it looks so much like a far-off desert planet that it has stood in for Mars in a series of Hollywood blockbusters. The pink sandstone formations rising out of the red dirt, framed by a sapphire blue sky, create an ethereal beauty easily mistaken for outer space.
Dotted around the 100-year-old mining town, halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs, are the abandoned props from those films: a dilapidated spaceship here, paper mache aliens there. The eerie celestial monuments punctuate the red streets alongside discarded mining equipment and weathered opal shop signs.
Welcome to the opal capital of the world and the strangest town in Australia.
Coober Pedy’s heyday is well behind it and it seems frozen in the ’80s – the last opal boom. Mining has declined sharply since the ’90s, as the old guard dies off and the town transitions into its new life as an offbeat tourist attraction.

Coober Pedy: The Australian town with homes underground
Last month the UN announced 2014 was set to be the hottest year on record increasing concerns about global warming.
Australia - often referred to as the petri dish of climate change - has also had a record-breaking year in terms of temperature.
But in one small town in the Australian outback, they have found an unusual way of dealing with the heat.
