Fayetteville Public Library gets donation to help with expansion
“When I was seven or eight I used to go to the old city library… the librarian would violate all the rules and let me fill up a cardboard box full of books and take it home.”

Customer Project: University of Arkansas Library Annex, Fayetteville, AR USA
Designed to store nearly 2 million library volumes and works of art, the University of Arkansas Library Annex in Fayetteville was built with cross-laminated timber (CLT) roofs, walls and floors, and glulam beams, columns and moment frames.
According to the project team, pre-fabrication of the CLT and glulam system helped speed construction and minimized jobsite waste, resulting in a cost-competitive replacement for the traditional steel and tilt-up concrete structure initially suggested by the client. Inside, the wood is left exposed, warming the space and brightening the room to create a comfortable work environment.
Since the area is prone to tornados, the team opted to clad the larger, high-density storage volume with a stone-filled gabion basket base wall to protect against low-flying projectiles, and a heavily charred wood upper shroud that can be easily repaired or replaced while providing a fire- and insect-resistant facade. With these and other design decisions, what could have been an ordinary warehouse storage facility is instead an attractive addition to the University’s campus.
Design was performed utilizing Dlubal software by the fabricators consultant, Holtzpak, and by structural EOR, Robbins Engineering. Utilizing Dlubal software allowed for quick and efficient coordination between the EOR and fabricators consultant regarding structural loading, design assumptions, and element releases.

The Fayetteville Public Library Now Offers a Telescope for Check Out
A telescope has just been donated to the Fayetteville Public Library. It is now available for check out.
“It’s an Orion Starblast and we got it a couple weeks ago. It was donated to us by the Supporting STEM and Space Corporated nonprofit which is partnering with the Sugar Creek Astronomical Society,” said Gretchen Allen, Assistant Manager of Circulation Services at the Fayetteville Public Library.
Gretchen Allen was the first staff member to check out the telescope. She didn’t know much about astronomy or how to use it.
“You can look at the stars, you can look out over the city. I took it up to the Cross on Mt. Sequoyah and looked out over the city and saw some cars driving by which was pretty cool. Just as long as you don’t look in the sun, you can look at whatever you want,
The Fayetteville Public Library staff is excited about the new technology.
“Our ability to provide as many services as we can to our patrons is really what we’re all about. To helping them discover new ways to think about things and new opportunities,” said Steve Litzinger, Marketing and Communications Manager at the Fayetteville Public Library.
To check out the telescope, you must be at least 18 years old and provide and driver’s license and library card.
