Preview of Anthony Bourdain's new episode - Kenya with Kamau Bell
The Peabody and Emmy® Award winning CNN Original Series Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown will premiere its final episodes beginning on Sunday, September 23, with a tour of Kenya, featuring W. Kamau Bell in an extended episode.
Dive into Bourdain's world:
Following are the locations and episode descriptions for the new season:
Kenya (season 12 premiere: September 23 – special extended episode 9pm-10:15pm ET) Bourdain introduces his fellow CNN Original Series host W. Kamau Bell (United Shades of America) to the distinctive sights, tastes, and sounds of Kenya. It is Bell’s first trip to the African continent, and to a country that holds a personal connection for him. In Nairobi, they talk to locals about the country’s growth and economic challenges, as well as the continual fight for identity and self-definition of Kenyans. Bourdain and Bell also take a Matatu party bus ride, share a meal of goat’s head soup and visit a boxing academy devoted to teaching young women, and promoting female empowerment. Leaving Nairobi the pair travel to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and visit with a Maasai community actively engaged in conservation. Through the eyes of Bourdain and Bell, and their first experiences with this highly dynamic deeply, soulful and beautiful country we ask, what will a future Kenya… for Kenyans…. by Kenyans…look like?
Asturias, Spain (September 30) Bourdain travels to the enchanted region of Asturias, Spain with chef and humanitarian Jose Andres, as he makes a return to his homeland. The people of Asturias embody the rugged environment of the region with a hard working ‘do it yourself’ spirit. Bourdain and Andres hike to a remote village in the mountains for traditional fabada, ocean cliffs for gooseneck barnacles, and secret cheese caves in undisclosed locations. Bourdain also enjoys pitu de caleya with local musician Pablo Und Destruktion while he’s served on the last worker’s class movement. And in true Jose Andres form, he saves a special surprise for the end.
Indonesia (October 7 ) A shadow puppet performance provides an entry into understanding Indonesia, a country comprised of thousands of islands whose people endured political turmoil, and one in which, Bourdain discovers, food is the great unifier. In this fourth largest country in the world, every area has it’s own unique traditions. In Jakarta, Bourdain eats at a Padang Restaurant where nearly every menu item comes to the table; while in Bali he visits the beach, commenting on yoga before joining in a traditional Balinese Funeral ceremony.
Bourdain’s Impact (October 14) This episode explores how Anthony Bourdain’s unique perspective and voice altered the world of food, travel and culture and in the process reinvented how audiences watched television and engaged intimately and actively with the world around them.
Far West Texas (October 21) Bourdain travels to the untamed land of Big Bend, Texas near the Mexican border; an area that pits man against nature and in which the land usually wins. Bourdain shares meals with working cowboys who have made peace with the rough terrain, and meets with an anthropologist who decoded prehistoric landmark, the White Shaman wall painting.
Behind the Scenes (October 28) Bourdain’s relationship with his crew, the team that traveled with him and slogged through the trenches, was like no other in his life. In this episode the people who made Parts Unknown select moments from their episodes and pull back the curtain, to talk about collaboration, creative freedom, moments when Bourdain had their back or called them out, the times when he was caught off guard or forgot the cameras were even there.
Lower East Side (November 11 special extended episode 9pm-10:15pm ET) Bourdain takes a personal journey through this formerly bohemian New York City neighborhood, as he meets, shares meals and reflects with music, film and art trailblazers including Richard Hell, Deborah Harry and Chris Stein, Lydia Lunch, Fab 5 Freddy, Danny Fields, Amos Poe, Jim Jarmusch, Kembra Pfahler, John Lurie, Clayton Patterson and Harley Flanagan, whose collective cultural impact in the 1970’s and ’80’s has sustained through the decades.
Kenya @50: Asian African Heritage - The Railway Builders
As Kenya marks 50 years since unshackling itself from colonialism, it is perhaps time to look back at the history of some of Kenya's landmarks to better understand the contribution made by Kenyans of different races in shaping the country's future. For just two sterling pounds a month, an equivalent of 24,000 Kenya shillings at current exchange rates, and using nothing other than their bare hands and feet, indian labourers dared the man-eating lions of Tsavo to build the rail track from Mombasa to Kampala. Their sacrifices in the construction of the line nicknamed the lunatic express helped lay the foundation to a modern Kenya and book a special place for the Indian community in Kenya.
Our reporter brings you the story of the Indian connection to Kenya's infrastructural development.

A house and sections of a highway near Nairobi, Kenya have been destroyed after the ground split beneath them. On March 18, resident Eliud Njoroge Mbugua and his wife noticed a crack in their floor. Within days, the house collapsed and was demolished, leaving Mbugua to salvage the remains. Seismic activity, coupled with heavy rain, led to the rapid split. The rainy season hit Kenya especially hard in mid-March, destabilizing the ash from a nearby volcano that had filled in the fissure. The volcanic soil is more easily washed away than the surrounding earth. As geologist David Adede explains, the crack reveals seismic instability. From the surface, the fault line’s exact location was indiscernible, until it was too late.

'My name is Becky and I’m a single mother of a son called Louis.
I longed to be a truck driver since I was a young girl.
This was because my dad was a truck driver.'
John Kinyua – Operations Manager East Africa: 'Becky is the first female truck driver in East Africa.'
Becky: 'I love my job – I drive my travellers or guests to national parks to see wildlife “Ok My Guests! In front of us we have white rhinos”
At first, men used to give me a hard time, I used to be very bullied. Every place that we go to, they will react'.
George Njau – Workshop Manager: 'First time I came here, I was so shocked to see a lady driving a truck. A lot of companies call me, they say: George – there’s a lady driving your vehicle. I said: Yeah. “how?” What do you mean how?. You saw her driving it. “Does she fix it?” I said yeah, she services the truck on the side of the road. She changes tyres. People think she’s supposed to be back in the village or in the house, cooking for her husband or cooking for her kids.'
Becky: 'They would even come and block me in the front. Like in Tanzania, they scream. Those ones would tell me: “Becky! You’re not supposed to be driving a truck, you’re a woman. Why should you! Can’t you go home and do something better? Maybe take care of your family. Anything to make me feel like I’m not supposed to do this.
There were some men who were like “I don’t think she should be in the truck that I’m in” That day, I think I cried half of the day, and I never had cried before. George is one of the person I will never forget. Because if it was not for his encouragement, then, I was to quit.'
George: 'Becky I been like “don’t lose hope. You’ll find challenges. People talk bad about you, but keep strong, and you’ll make it.”
Becky: 'Nakoudini Amini – Nakoudini Amini is believe in yourself.'
Workshop team: 'I was very new. So she helped me with some tips for the road. And I wished for her to carry me. Take me for a ride. And… it was awesome.'
'I think she drives it like she was born with it. She knows the truck inside out. She does what I can do. She’s one of us. She’s not different from anyone.'
Becky: 'I have been driving trucks for Intrepid for the last six years.'
George: 'Becky is very famous. The police know her, even the border. They see her, and they are like “Bring it”. She comes here in the office and everybody is chatting up with her. She has to run away: “I have work to do”. She’s part of our family, and we’re really proud of her.
My daughter, she loves Becky so much because she is driving trucks. She call her Aunty Becky. “One day I’d like to drive like Aunty Becky”. I say: “even you can drive if you want to, just have the courage, determination, and you’ll make it through”. People think she has triumphed. She has done what a lot of females do not accomplish.'
Becky: 'I just told her once: “Mum, do you know that I’m a truck driver?” “Oh my goodness!” she looks up and says: “I wish your dad can see you”.'
George: 'She has made a lot of companies think about employing female drivers now. So we’re looking forward to having a second lady driver, just all because of Becky. She encourages a lot of women now. A lot of women are looking to do driving.'
Becky: 'You say: “I’m a go-getter”. You’ll get it, you’ll get whatever you want.'
George: 'I’m proud to say that, we have the first female driver in East Africa, and that is Becky.'

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1989. A company that began with two bearded backpackers, a typewriter and a kitchen table now leads 100,000 travellers across the globe each year.
And although we’re a bit larger these days – with 1,000 local staff based around the world and over 800 different trips across every continent (not to mention multiple kitchen tables) – our mission remains the same. We still get a kick out of responsible travel, small groups and very (very) big adventures.
Journey of the Hearts - Kenya
UPDATE: Follow my travel journey and join the discussions on Facebook!
I had a 'calling' to visit Rainbow House which I haven't even heard of before. This is home to forgotten and destitute kids located in Gede (coastal village in Kenya). I somehow found it on a whim and knew that's where I have to be. I packed my bags and arrived in the thick of the forest with no street signs or lights. What was I getting myself into? But it is there that I experienced so much with them. I didn't know what to expect, except to give. But in fact they were the real givers. Each child had a story behind them that is heartbreaking. I wanted to contribute however I could towards their happy childhood. But unexpectedly I felt mine redeemed and they knew how to make my inner child very happy :) They gave me more than anyone or anything ever could. Their faith, love, hope, joy and innocence had been ever humbling. They gave me a Swahili name called 'Upinde' which means Rainbow which I will embrace completely. I also had big revelations while camping in the wild for two nights. It turned out to be a journey of the heart and inspired me in so many ways. I wish I could take each of you there somehow to understand so much more. Click 'play', it's my small way to do this.

Wildlife Park inside Nairobi, Kenya is Home to The Big 5
“When you come to Kenya, you are coming to your original home,” so the Kenyan saying goes. Our Global Nomad CultursTV crew experienced the feeling of home first hand in travels through Kenya, Africa (especially on Safari).
Safari is a traditional word in the Kiswahili African language meaning “a journey.” These days “Safari” is oft used to indicate a journey through wildlife or tour of wildlife. This CultursTV travel segment takes our Adult Third Culture Kid (TCK) and Cross Culture Kid (CCK) crew on Safari travel through a number of national wildlife parks in Kenya, Africa.
This Safari video features Amboseli National Park, located in Loitoktok District, Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Amboseli is a Kenyan National Park that offers the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. It is said Amboseli is the space that allows closest proximity to elephants (something CultursTV experienced first hand in our travels!) They call Amboseli a “community” park because according to Amboseli National Park Deputy Senior Park Warden, Joseph Dadacha, you cannot separate the local Masai people from Amboseli National Park; one cannot separate this Kenyan National Park from its culture.
Check it out and see for yourself the splendor of Safari.
