Denia Centeno: Teaching in the U.S. with Participate
Honduran native Denia Centeno talks about her experience teaching in the United States with Participate Learning.
TRANSCRIPT
Denia Centeno: You know with these kids every day is something different. In teaching Spanish it's even more rewarding because you know that they can give you that feedback immediately, and they understand everything even when you're talking to them and you're mad or something they will understand it. [Speaking Spanish with students]
Student 1: Some of my friends say, ‘I want to learn how to speak Spanish, it's hard.’ I personally don't think it's hard because I've been in it for like six years now.
Student 2: I like speaking two languages because I like to speak Spanish just like my mom and dad.
Student 3: If you want to travel you know more languages and it actually makes you smarter because you think in both languages.
Denia Centeno:From the first year until now I can say that I have grown as a person, as a teacher, as an individual. The first year it was like getting to know the community, the program, the kids, the school, the system, everything was new. You feel like overwhelmed with a lot of information that you have to manage, a lot of details that you have to be aware of, but once you learn all of these things everything gets you know smoother and not easier but you get like you gain that confidence to do things. You grow personally and professionally and that is reflected in your teaching also.
Student 3: It makes me feel happy that she's proud of where she comes from.
Student 1: Every time we learn something new she like tries to make it fun so we all understand it and like make it seem like it's not boring.
Denia Centeno: [Speaking Spanish with students] So year round starts before traditional calendar. We usually start on July, in the middle of July. It goes year round as the word says. We work all year, nine weeks period. We teach for nine weeks and then we have a break for three weeks that we call intersession.
Student 1: Having a year-round calendar is better than other types of schools because we have three weeks break and the normal schools would have like one week.
Student 2: We might have a short summer but we have to go like after summer we only have nine weeks and then we would go to break.
Denia Centeno: For me it's perfect, because every nine weeks everybody feels you know all the things that we have been doing, so you're tired, kids are tired and they already know that time is coming. So they will be having that time to relax and refresh as well as teachers the same. If you are really looking for growth personal and professional this is a good opportunity. I won’t tell you that it’s easy; it's not easy, but if you come with your goals and you're convinced that you want to make a change in your life, this is an opportunity to have it. I'm emotional sometimes when I have the opportunity to look back and see where I was and where I am now and that all of these good things can be transmitted to my students and sharing my culture and everything in here.

#1 | GUESTING at a WEDDING in SPAIN (Also... PORTUGAL)
One of the things that we cherish the most in our lives are our friendships we have made over the years. So when Hernan & Ines invited us to their wedding in June (this year), we said ABSOLUTELY! We blocked the date, and made sure we'd be there!
A perfect little break in the middle of our incredibly crazy wedding season; and now since we're back - we're feeling 100's (minus the hangover that still lingers) to go and shoot another epic wedding in South Tyrol!

SEMESTER IN SPAIN, 1988 (@ UNED in Denia, Espana, with Calvin College class)...A great experience...great teachers, classmates, new friends etc ...we lived with a family in spain,...in the little town of denia and attended spanish classes every day at the university (called uned for short) ...denia is between alicante and valencia...further south of barcelona. It's also near Benidorm. We also traveled around Spain...including the famous Alhambra, as well as Mallorica, Madrid, ...even snow-skiing in the Granadas; and spent a week in London for spring break. I only had one bad experience during the semester..I got hit in the lip by a flying firecracker (or something )...I literally do not remember getting hit but only remember standing up and feeling my lip cut..ended up needing 20 stitches (u will see the pic)...my best guess was that during the fallas festivities as we were standing in the street something accidentally ( i hope) hit me in the lip ...but I survived...still have a small scar . God bless our teachers..and my classmates..hope all is well wherever you are today !

Dance like nobody is watching - Lessons learned from a 3 year old (5/30)
Hi! We are here at Denia's World Dance Day - The Afterparty and everyone is going wild … in silence :-D
Yes indeed, people are dancing in the center of Denia - Spain just with the music of their head phones.
While on one hand today it's an intent to break the record of the biggest silent dance party worldwide on the other hand it's all about unity and mental freedom.
As an adult we need these special occasions to overcome our fears while with every dance event there are children dancing and having the time of their life often even without music!
Let's be free and whenever you feel like: dance like nobody is watching.

Arabs in Catalonia complain of isolation amid push for independence
Barcelona's charm lies in its Mediterranean climate, cuisine and proximity to the sea.
But aside from being a popular tourist destination, the city also remains at the forefront of a wave of immigration that began in the 1990s.
Today, nearly 17 percent of Barcelona's residents are immigrants.
Across Catalonia, Moroccans represent the largest Arab community.
A non-binding vote on secession from Spain has shown strong support for it going alone.
On Monday, with 97 percent of votes counted, the regional government said more than 2.2 million people had voted and of those, over 80 percent opted to break away
Immigrant Jihad Nahhal, who is of Moroccan origin but has lived half her life in Spain, arrived when she was 14.
Nahhal works in this busy cafe.
When Catalonia initially geared up towards achieving independence, only a small percentage of the region's residents were foreign nationals.
Today, the population has changed dramatically and the sizeable community of Muslims, along with others, has helped boost the Catalan economy.
But residents like Safae Khouribich, who is from Morocco, say they feel isolated in the community.
The so-called independence of Catalonia affects Spain and Catalonia. Us, Muslims do not exist for them. For example when it comes to jobs, others come ahead of us, Spaniards, Romanians, South Americans. Muslims are the last on this list, she says.
Safae has been living in Barcelona for two years and is trying to bring over her husband, who still lives in Morocco.
As she is not a resident, she was not eligible to vote in the weekend's poll.
In order to become a resident and later apply for citizenship, Safae needs a permanent job.
Atman Massafliam, of Moroccan Berber Maghreb origin, is a regular customer at the Palestinian restaurant, Jerusalem, in Barcelona port.
Atman believes Muslims have been stereotyped in Catalonia - and that's led to difficulties in the workplace.
I like Catalonia, their culture. My children were raised here. However the problem here is that there is no future. No future for my children, plus I'm Arab, a Muslim. When it comes to work, others, Spaniards are preferred, he says.
Fatima Mahryr, who is also from Morocco, voices the same criticisms.
Yes, there is so much difference. I'm Muslim, Moroccan. I came here to find a job, to find my future. But thinking if now I'm Catalan? No, she says.
Despite this kind of criticism, the Catalonian government has courted the support of more than half-a-million Muslims living in Catalonia.
In fact, some Spanish media have suggested that a recently announced plan to teach Arabic in certain public schools with Muslim pupils is a move to buy the support of these communities.
Also a pro-independence group called Nous Catalans (New Catalans) have been trying to engage with the Muslim population, promising better job opportunities for all in an independent Catalonia.
But Mahmoud Mossa, a Palestinian resident from Gaza, does not need a lot of convincing.
Mossa came to Catalonia in 2000.
He said he was going to vote yes in the Sunday's poll.
Because Catalonia deserves being a state or a unique country, just like other countries. Because of the Catalan economy, their language, their food. In reality, I see Catalans being so righteous in their demands. Probably there are lots who do not want the independence because of political reasons. But I am with them, he says.
Catalonia's government was forced to cancel the 9 November referendum and replace it with a symbolic one on the same day, after Spain's government challenged the referendum in the country's Constitutional Court.
The vote was suspended pending deliberations.

Alicante Airport (ALC) Catches Fire – Passengers Evacuated & Flights Delayed - Airport Closed
Alicante Airport (ALC) Catches Fire – Passengers Evacuated & Flights Delayed
A large fire has shut a major European airport causing chaos for Brit holidaymakers.
Brits have now been told to stay away from Alicante Airport as it emerged it will remain closed until midday tomorrow after a fire took hold this afternoon.
A spokesman has tonight signalled further chaos for Brit tourists by confirming the airport in southeastern Spain would not be open to air traffic again until midday Thursday.
The spokesman said: “Alicante-Elche airport will not be operative until midday on January 16.
“Please do not go to the airport and contact your airline.”
His comments came after an earlier message from the airports authority confirming: “We are coordinating the operation with airlines.
“Consult your airline to find out if they have cancelled your flight or are operating it from an alternative airport.
“Cancellations are taking place. We are working to try to bring the situation back to normal as soon as possible.”

Ella boy was born from the necessity of reinventing oneself. A more gender fluid being. “Ella” means She in spanish and it’s not necessary opposed to boy, cause we need to explore both masculine and feminine energies mixed in one body. Shamelessly, proudly and universally. We can all be Ella.
——————————————————

Lyrics:
Hunting Season
[Verse]
With my heart and soul
I cannot control what I feel towards you
With my body and soul
What I feel and show it’s against all the rules
And I’ve been a sinner just because I’m with you
There’s a lot of opinions strong enough to hurt you
All the troubled souls
They still don’t know what to do with their rules
When you come back home
You just look around trying to find all the clues
[Pre-Chorus]
You fight for love but you’re afraid of the dark
You fight for love but you’re are falling apart
You fight for love I heard these days is so hard
We strive for love but we don’t know where to start
[Chorus]
You better run.. is hunting season
You better run.. is hunting season
There is no place to go, they’re are burning all the souls.
You better run.. is hunting season (2x)
[Pre-Chorus]
You fight for love I heard these days is so hard.
We strive for love but we don’t know where to start.
[Chorus]
You better run.. is hunting season
You better run.. is hunting season
There is no place to go, they’re are burning all the souls.
You better run.. is hunting season
