New Zealand Wine: Central Otago - Felton Road
Central Otago is located in the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand, and it is the most southerly winegrowing region in the world. Protected from the ocean by high mountains of up to 3,700 meters of altitude, Central Otago is the only region in New Zealand with an authentic semi-continental climate. The region has in recent years been widely recognized for its outstanding Pinot Noirs, which account for more than 70 percent of its production. The other main varieties planted are Riesling and Chardonnay.
Our first stop was Felton Road, which is located on the warmer north-facing slopes of the Bannockburn subregion. Felton Road has been producing wine in Bannockburn since 1997. Its facilities have a modern gravity-fed winery and its vineyards -- all farmed biodynamically -- are Demeter certified. Felton focuses on Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with each variety having a regular bottling under the Bannockburn label, and one or more single vineyard bottlings depending on the variety.
In this video, James met with Blair Walter, senior winemaker at Felton Road. Blair explained that one of the main factors that singles out Central Otago from the rest of New Zealand is the semi-continental climate that the region enjoys. Other wine regions in New Zealand have the moderating effect of cool ocean breeze, which in turn creates a more temperate maritime climate. As Blair explains, Central Otago is locked in a mountain basin that creates high daytime temperatures, but also cool temperatures at nighttime. This temperature variation adds depth of color and flavor to the wines, in addition to its well-known freshness.
When asked about what differentiates Central Otago Pinots from the rest of New Zealand, Blair explained that the contrast between nocturnal low temperatures and hot daytime ones creates a different ripening curve. The different degrees of ripeness that result from CO’s continental climate and altitude give the winemaker the opportunity to create more complexity in the wines. And this, as Blair states, “is a great platform to be working from.
