Hunan Province Vlog: Fenghuang Ancient Town!

We recently spent 4 days and 4 nights in Hunan Province. After flying into Zhangjiajie City late on a Friday night, we stayed at a hotel close to to the airport then took the 9:30 AM bus to Feng Huang Ancient Town. It took three hours in ideal driving conditions, blue skies and no traffic.
We had a tight schedule for the trip, so we were only able to stay in Feng Huang for one night. But it was worth the 6-7 hour roundtrip bus ride! The town was almost deserted during the day, maybe because it was so hot out (90 degree Fahrenheit with little cloud coverage!). It was great to wander the town and have the river promenade and back alleyways all to ourselves! The ancient town completely transforms over night and it almost unrecognizable. The colorful lights, karaoke and DJ music, and bustling streets give the ancient town a modern look.
A couple years ago the city started charging tourists for admission into the ancient part of the city. We went to an official kiosk and paid 148 RMB for a 3-day pass, which allows you an unlimited number of entries and exits. We noticed that security and ticket checks amp up at night when there are far more tourists coming and going.
We didn't book accommodation prior to our arrival in Feng Huang. We ended up staying JiangNang BinGuan, which is next to the NanHua Gate. We paid 160 RMB for the night but later found out that the going rate on CTrip.com is 88 RMB. Lesson: Don't be shy about bargaining. ;)
In ZhangJiaJie City, we stayed at WanTai International Hotel and pre-booked the room through Agoda.com. We liked the hotel except for the fact that cigarette smoke from other rooms filtered into our room through the vents making the fact that we were in a non smoking room completely worthless. For this reason alone, we would not stay at WanTai International again.
FYI: Both WanTai and JiangNan had only Mandarin-speaking staff.
On August 31, we took a bus from FengHuang to WuLingYuang National Park, which is about 50 km from ZhangJiaJie City. We're excited to share videos from the park next!

FengHuang 凤凰 Ancient Town - Top Five Museums, China.
I wanted to make this cinematic little film to show off the beauty of these buildings and the heritage they protect. They are absolutely fascinating. I would encourage anyone to visit them if you're travelling through the FengHuang County in Southern China.
This was all handheld shooting; so I did the best I could to produce smooth enough footage. Shot this with my Sony A6500 on the Zeiss 16-70 F4 lens, 1080p @100fps. I didn't use a picture profile but i did use my own presets to do the color grading in post.

The Ancient Buildings in Fenhuang (Phoenix Town), China
Fenghuang not only has great natural beauty but also an ancient history that spans 1300 years with distinctive, residential buildings and celebrated men. Two men from the Chinese Republican era were born in this small city. Xiong Xiling, the first premier of the Republic of China and Shen Congwen, a famous Miao scholar.
A very imposing house belonged to Chen Baozhen, a powerful general, Chinese statesman and reformer in Qing times. All interesting even though we had never heard any of these names before.

The ancient village of Hongcun in Yi County and Anhui Province goes back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The village became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and scenes from the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed in this location. The ancient town of Phoenix, or Fenghuang Gucheng (风凰古城) is some 300 km west of Changsa City (长沙) in Hunan Province (湖南省), quite near the famous Zhangjiajie National Park(张家界国家公园). It is the home of the minority tribe Tujia (土加族). They built stilt houses along the river. Most young people sing well, as this was one of their favorite pastime. In the past when transportation/accessibility was poor, singing was a way to communicate and for young ones to seek life partners.In this video one can hear the high pitch beautiful voice of a girl demonstration their sing.

Crowds in Beijing for the National Holiday
This was taken just south of Tiananmen, I just wanted to record some of the crowds of Chinese tourists that were visiting the capital for National Day.

Changli （昌黎）is a district of the city of Qinhuangdao （秦皇岛）. It was previously just a place to grow grapes but now, developers are trying to bring the public to these places to invest in.
Ancient cities in China are everywhere but this one is interesting because it isn't ancient at all; it's only about 5 months old since the making of this video!
Although this Chinese town isn't old, it still has the traditional Chinese architecture and layout to appeal to many tourists. It's currently quite vacant, but expect this area to be booming with shops, bars and restaurants in the future. These are all part of efforts by the government to further develop the city of Qinhuangdao by increasing investment into rural parts of it such as Changli.

PingLe Ancient Town, 2 hours drive from Chengdu, is the least touristic and the poorest of all the ancient towns around Chengdu but the Lugou scenic area is beautiful and it's a good place to shop.
