Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family (Chen Clan Academy)

Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family is also called Chen Clan Academy or Chen's Lineage Hall which was a place in Guangzhou both for offering up sacrifices to ancestors and for study. Now it serves as Guangdong Folk Arts Museum to show the most characteristic Guangdong architecture. The Chen Clan Ancestral Temple in Guangzhou City, the Ancestors' Temple in Foshan City, the former Residence of Sun Yat-sen in Zhongshan City and the Opium War Memorial Hall in Dongguan City are regarded as the four major cultural tourist sites in Guangdong Province.

In the late of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), a man named Chen got the third place in the highest imperial examination and had conferred upon him a distinguished office title which made the Family Chen well-known. Later someone suggested that all the Chen's families raise money to build a temple to sacrifice to the ancestors and encourage their offspring likewise to study hard. Therefore, the temple was finished in 1894 with the money donated by Chen's families in 72 counties of Guangdong Province as well as some overseas members of Family Chen.

The Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family is a compound complex consisting of nine halls, six courtyards and nineteen buildings connected by corridors, all separated by walls from the outside world. A pair of stone drums in front of the entrance door, measuring 2.55 meters (about 8.36 feet) in height and two colored drawing pictures of door-god of four meters (about 13 feet) height are said to be the best in Guangdong.

The Chen Clan Academy was constructed in the traditional Chinese symmetrical style and the main hall, the Juxian Hall is in the center of the temple. Juxian Hall was once a place for clansmen to assemble before the establishment of the temple and now it is used as an ancestral hall. In front of the hall is a stone gazebo surrounded by stone balustrades. In the hall there is an exquisitely carved folding screen which is an excellent example of woodcarving.

The most impressive attractions of the Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family are various superb carvings extolling nature. They are in the forms of wood, brick, pottery, stone, lime and things like that, of which wood carving especially fully demonstrates the great achievements of the art of carving in Guangdong Province. Stories of historical celebrities and scenes are also vividly represented in the temple.

Imperial Ancestry Temple Tour / 太庙 / 太廟

The main complex of the Imperial Ancestral Temple / 太庙 / 太廟 was closed for event preparations when I was there. The complex is a historic site in the Imperial City, just outside the Forbidden City, where during both the Ming and Qing Dynasties, sacrificial ceremonies were held on the most important festival occasions in honor of the imperial family's ancestors.

The temple, which resembles the Forbidden City's ground plan, is a cluster of buildings in three large courtyards separated by walls. The main hall inside the temple is the Hall for Worship of Ancestors, which is one of only four buildings in Beijing to stand on a three-tiered platform, a hint that it was the most sacred site in imperial Beijing. It contains seats and beds for the tablets of emperors and empresses, as well as incense burners and offerings. On the occasion of large-scale ceremonies for worship of ancestors, the emperors would come here to participate.

Flanking the courtyard in front of this hall are two long, narrow buildings. These were worship halls for various princes and courtiers. The Western Wing housed the memorial tablets of meritorious courtiers, while the Eastern Wing enshrined various princes of the Ming or Qing dynasty.

Behind the Hall for Worship of Ancestors are two other main halls. The first was built in 1420 and used to store imperial ancestral tablets.

By the 1920s, the Imperial Ancestral Temple and its surrounding spaces had become a public park, and that public park today has been expanded from its original size and is now also known as the Working People's Cultural Palace (劳动人民文化宫). This park was extended based on the Imperial Ancestral Hall site, and the park is located east of Tiananmen, while the Zhongshan Park lies to the west. These two parks along with Beihai Park and Jingshan and several other parks have a deep historic tie with the Forbidden City.

About our beloved father: Wennan Yang (杨文南）

Our beloved father, Wennan Yang (杨文南) passed away at 31 August 2011 with age of 88 years old. I made this photo album to celebrate and memorize his ordinary but significant life. He was born from a poor family with a small grocery business in a small town called Qinghe Xiang (清河乡/何家场) in Pixian County (郫县), Chengdu （成都）, Sichuan province （四川省）, Southwestern China and was 2nd son in his family. He was smart in primary school but his family was unable to support him to continue his study. He had to work as an apprentice (学徒）in a grocery shop in Wenjian (温江)/Chengdu when he was only 12 years old. Since early 1950's, he had worked in a tax bureau in Pixian (郫县) (where he met our Mom) for about 40 years until his retirement in late 1990s. He was a deeply beloved father by his family members and also a well respected colleague by his co-workers. He was caring man, a hard worker, self-disciplined, always considering others more priority than his. He had an optimistic character and like singing Chinese songs and Sichuan opera (川剧)。Even receiving limited education, he demonstrated his artistic talent by good hand-writing and photography as a hobby in his retirement life. He was proud of his three children. Now he must enjoy a long peaceful rest after his exhausted long journey of life. Dear dad, we love you!!!
