Feraklos Castle - Rhodes
It is built at the area of Malona, on a 85-meter high hill, between the beaches of Agia Agathi and Charaki.
It is also known as Feraklou or Faraklenon Castle.
The conquest of the castle by the Knights of Saint John with the Grand Master Foulques de Villaret on 20 September 1306 is the first conquest of a castle in Rhodes by knights.
There are two construction phases: Byzantine and Knights’ construction phase.
The fortification has a polygonal shape, and battlements of a simple rectangular shape. A main gate and two cylindrical towers of the 15th century are still preserved.
On the walls one can still see coats of arms of the Order of the Knights of Saint John and the Grand Master G. B. degli Orsini.
Faraklos Castle had visual contact with the castle of Lindos. According to Bosio, in 1470 it was ordered that all the castles of Rhodes be abandoned, except for the castles of Lindos and Faraklos, the fortifications of which had to be reinforced. The residents of the neighboring villages Malona, Salia, Katagros, Zinodotou and Kaminari would resort to Faraklos Castle whenever they faced any risk, as it is demonstrated in the 1474 decree.

The scenic Haraki beach is a firm favourite amongst tourists in the resort. The bay is split into two parts, with the left hand side made up of dusty white sand and to the right a number of large pebbles. It is from this side where you'll find the most attractive views of the beach, with the famous Feraklos castle in full view along with the harbour, where a number of celebrities yachts would once have been anchored.

Nouveau Vlog sur Rhodes !
Nous sommes partis à la découverte de FERAKLOS CASTLE ou La FORTERESSE DE FERAKLOS. C’est une forteresse médiévale en ruine située sur une haute colline surplombant le village de Charaki ou Haraki (suivant les cartes…) sur la côte Est de l'île de Rhodes, en Grèce .
Depuis le petit village, on peut monter à pied par un sentier jusqu’aux ruines de ce château… C’est une très belle découverte… Mais attention le sentier… est approximatif
Pour la petite minute histoire : ce château est l’un des plus puissants construits par les chevaliers de Saint-Jean. Il a été le repaire de pirates à certaines époques…
Le point de vue est EXCEPTIONNEL, une fois arrivés au château…
Cette visite est gratuite, et peu touristique… C’est un vrai bonheur !
Ensuite nous sommes partis à la découverte de la plage d’Haraki, à savoir AGATHI BEACH.
C’est un petit trésor de plage, avec son sable blond et son eau bleue ! C’est magnifique ! (Malgré le fait qu’on ait trouvé cette plage un peu trop touristique à notre goût.) Le décor de carte postale qui entoure cette plage est à voir !
On a encore passé une très bonne journée à découvrir cette île de Rhodes ! et ce n’est pas encore fini... L’île nous réserve encore de belles surprises….

Pheraklos/Feraklos Rhodos Castle
This video is showing the fortress which was originally built in the Byzantine era. It was captured by the Knights Hospitaller on 20 September 1306, being their first possession on the island that would become their base. By 1408 it was in ruins, and was repaired under the Grand Masters Giovanni Battista Orsini (1467–76) and Pierre d'Aubusson (1476–1503) as a stronghold to protect the area, and particularly watch over the anchorages at the Charaki and Agia Agathi beaches nearby.[1] After 1470, the Hospitallers abandoned all other fortifications on the island except for Feraklos, nearby Lindos, and the city of Rhodes, which in turn were further strengthened. A decree of 1474 prescribed that the inhabitants of the villages of Malona, Salia, Katagros, Zinodotou, and Kaminari were to find refuge un the Feraklos Castle in case of danger.[1]
The fort was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1523 after a long siege, a few months after the capture of Rhodes. The Ottomans did not use the castle and it has since been abandoned.
Agathi Beach Rhodes Greece
Agathi beach in Rhodes is famous for its fine sand and its shallow waters. On your way to the beach, you will see the Medieval Castle of Feraklos, which is also worth a visit.
At the right side of the beach you will find some interesting underwater rock formations along the coastline, making this also an ideal spot for snorkeling.
To get to the beach, follow the signs from Haraki (5 minutes along a passable dirt road). Half way along the road you come upon the medieval castle of Feraclos.
