Fergus, Ontario: Driving Tour Through Town (March 10, 2018)
On March 10, 2018, we videoed a driving tour through the town of Fergus, Ontario.
Our route took us into town from the south via Highway 6 (Tower Street). Due to construction and the closure of the St. David Street bridge, across the Grand River, we continued on Tower Street before turning right on St. George St. and taking a left on St. David. We restarted the tour on St. Andrew Street, at the east end of downtown. We took that road west and to the outskirts of town, toward Elora.
Fergus, Ontario is an unincorporated community in the township of Centre Wellington and Wellington County. The town has a rapidly growing population that has surpassed 21,000.
Located on the Grand River, downstream from Belwood Lake and above the Elora Gorge, Fergus is just 18 kilometres north of the larger city of Guelph. We covered Guelph in an earlier video - see it here:
The town was settled in 1833 and was incorporated as a village in 1858. The name is in honour of one of the founders, Adam Fergusson.
A haven of Scottish heritage, the town is home to the annual Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, an event held each year in August, since 1946.
Fergus is the birthplace of former NHL goaltender Ed Chadwick. Chadwick played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. It is also the birthplace to an Ironman Triathlon great, Lori Bowden.

Rocky Mountain Express B-Roll-Music&FX
Rocky Mountain Express IMAX film
Directed by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Stephen Low, Rocky Mountain Express propels audiences on a present-day steam train journey through the breathtaking vistas of the Canadian Rockies and relates the extraordinary story of the building of the nation's first transcontinental railway. Ride the rails along deep river canyons and over high mountain passes—discover some of the most beautiful and rugged landscapes on earth and join in the heroic human drama and epic engineering that shaped a continent.
The completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1885 ranks among the greatest engineering feats in history. The project drew on the labour and expertise of thousands from around the world, including a young American railway superintendent named William Cornelius Van Horne, who later went on to become President of the CPR.
If the builders had failed, would Canada exist today? Spanning thousands of miles and some of the world's greatest natural barriers, this grand transcontinental project and its wandering ribbon of steel drew together far flung communities isolated in the wilderness, shaped a new nation and changed the face of the North American continent forever. The success or failure of the venture was decided deep in the mountains.
Retracing the original route aboard the majestic steam engine 2816, Rocky Mountain Express transports audiences back to the age of steam to re-live this alpine nation-building odyssey. Filmmaker Stephen Low weaves together spectacular IMAX aerial cinematography, breathtaking vistas of the west, archival images and maps and the potent energy and rhythms of a live steam locomotive to immerse audiences in a an era of remarkable ingenuity and struggle and a region of stunning natural beauty.

Magic festival appears in Southern Ontario. It's the Ontario Week of Wonder (OWOW )Magic Festival! Along with national magic week OWOW Magic Festival features events for the public and secret events for magicians. Both a public magic festival and magicians convention combined. Family events!
Are you a student of magic?
Magician Publication Article
By Peter Mennie
Oh, wow! The Ontario Week of Wonder OWOW Magic Festival is a seven-day public celebration of magic and illusion held in downtown Fergus, Ontario Canada.
The festival of magic and magicians is like no other!
OWOW Magic Festival happens the last week in October and coincides with National Magic Week Oct 24-31. It's an immersive magical experience featuring some of the world's greatest magicians with events happening table-to-table, around town and at the historic Fergus Grand Theatre.
Families will be able to enjoy an afternoon of magical experiences that complement the area's month-long festival of Halloween called Monster Month.
Simultaneously to the magic festival for the general public, there is a secret gathering of magicians who will celebrate, share and learn their art with each other.
Let's step back because you might have two immediate questions. First, where the heck is Fergus? And second, who is behind all this?
Fergus, Ontario, is the largest community in Centre Wellington, one hour drive from Toronto. The Township of Centre Wellington lies along a stunning stretch of the Grand River known for its natural beauty and gorge with 80ft limestone cliffs.
The area has gained tremendous popularity over the past twelve years and has recently been featured in National Geographic, BlogTO, and countless blockbuster movies.
The Township of Centre Wellington is a year-round tourism destination but has gained massive popularity during October because of Monster Month, an annual month-long festival that draws zombies from near and far.
A perfect location for magic and adventure. It might sound like an ideal place to start a career in magic, and that's precisely what Ryan Joyce did. Like most magicians, Ryan caught the magic bug in his early teens, but as an entrepreneur, he wasn't satisfied with doing birthday parties for his entire career.
Together with a business plan in hand (and likely a PowerPoint presentation), Ryan convinced his Student Council and Drama Executive to fund the construction of a full-scale illusion show that he produced in his final year.
A national promoter got his hands on a copy of the show and booked Ryan for a ten week tour that ended in 13 years of cross-country tours. From there he has spent 10 years working the cruise market.
Ryan Joyce is a man who wears many top hats. Today, Ryan is a magician, illusionist, hypnotist, producer and filmmaker.
The OWOW Festival has another magical co-organizer who needs no introduction. Joan Caesar is the founder and past-president of the Canadian Association Of Magicians. She has served as President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (2008-2009) and has over 20 years in various roles within the organization and the competitive side of professional magic including FISM. As a magician, Joan performs magic for both children and adults in a variety of venues around the world.
So who is coming to the OWOW Magic Festival? There is an incredible line-up already confirmed, including Paul Romhany, Stephen Bargatze, Rick Merrill, Jay Sankey, Carisa Hendrix (aka Lucy Daring), Michael CLose, Nicholas Wallace, Greg Frewin, Ryan Joyce, Peter Mennie and Owen Anderson.
And perhaps other super-secret guests?!
Many of these magicians will be pulling double duty at this year's festival! The majority of the festival's team are magicians, it's going to be an incredible week of magic.
Details and convention registration can be found at magicfestival.ca

The Mr Spin Show Part 2 of 2 - Street Theatre, Rundle Mall, Adelaide Sth Australia 2015
The show is a highly skilled, comedy street and circus act. Mr. Spin performs a beautiful three-ball juggle, Chinese devil-sticking with baseball bats, one ball manipulation and an eight ball juggle, mixed with mad capped antics and an incredible sense of fun, not to mention a few hat tricks thrown in! This all culminates in him jumping on to an eight-foot zigzag unicycle (of his own design) from which he juggles three baseball bats while balancing a glass of water on his head – a world-class performance that has won many awards around the globe.
