Shocking images have also emerged of animals struggling to stay alive in the stifling 49C (120F) heat and resulting fires. As Victoria sweltered on one of its hottest ever days, cockatoos were seen “falling dead” in photos shared on Twitter. “The thermometer under the back veranda got to 48.9C today, not an official reading obviously, but it was enough to kill these sulphur-crested cockatoos,” wrote Bill Wallace. He then posted shocking images of the dead birds lying on the ground. “Witnessed (this) at St George Queensland in 1988, tragic as they were simply falling out of the trees,” one person added. Other social media users shared photos of animals stressed in the heat over the weekend, including another bird - a frogmouth - that had fallen dead from a tree in Sydney. Distressing images of a burnt greater glider injured in the fires caused by the scorching heat were also shared by animal rescue group WIRES. The beast, which is a threatened marsupial, was injured and carrying her young joey, reports news.com It was found on a walking track in Meroo Head National Park, near Ulladulla - which is currently closed due to the Currowan fire. Flying fox populations have also been affected as the fires ripped through the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven regions. “Devastatingly, for many Flying Fox mothers and their babies help came too late,” the Native Wildlife Rescue wrote in a post on Facebook. Some 2,000 koalas are feared to have died over the course of this bush fire season so far, according to wildlife experts. A heroic firefighter who helped battle raging blazes in Australia has shared a shocking photo of a completely burnt and blackened koala that tragically died trying to escape one deadly blaze. The heartbreaking image was captured by Peter Luker while on his way to fight an out of control bushfire near his hometown of Fernvale, Queensland. The 55-year old said: “The fire that this koala was caught up in was an especially out of control blaze that had burnt right through to the top of the trees. “The poor little thing didn’t really have a chance. I think this koala has tried to escape the flames by running down into a nearby gully but it obviously didn’t make it. “I do a lot of koala rescues, and I actually help hand-raise koala orphans at home. So this was really close to my heart. “It was really such a sad thing to see, and I did shed a tear when I saw it. A heatwave struck the state last week sending temperatures soaring into the high 40s - helping fuel bush fires in four states. Strong winds and record temperatures have seen wildfires tear through an area bigger then Belgium in r

Brisbane Flood 2011
Unprecedented and prolonged rainfall during December 2010 in Queensland was caused by a strong La Nina weather pattern, setting record high rainfall totals in over 100 locations for the month.
The heavy and widespread rain continued in January, culminating in the Queensland river catchment system which feeds into the Brisbane River being overcome.
The Brisbane River banks broke on the 11th of January 2011 and river levels peaked on the 13th at 4.46 metres, the sixth highest in the city's long history.
By this time many thousands of houses had been evacuated and streets closed due to flooding precautions.
The peak caused approximately 20,000 houses to be affected by flood waters with St Lucia, West End, Rocklea and Graceville amongst the worst affected areas.
