Ferry Ride From Samos, Greece To Kusadasi, Turkey - 09-10-2015
20100918 1-3 Kuşadası (TR) - Samos (GR) vice versa
20100918 Part 1-3 Kusadasi (Turkey) Samos (Greece) vice versa
We wait before the gate to Ephesia Holiday Club near Kuşadası. The bus arrives in time and takes us along other hotels collecting tourists for a boat trip to the Greek island of Samos. Not all participants of today are present which effects the driver's mood.
He growls his anger away in his mobile telephone when driving the bus to the harbour where two cruise ships are moored. They are not waiting for us, but nevertheless they gain our attention.
In the harbour area our passports are collected by a casual looking youngster who takes them to the custom office. Almost three quarters of hour later we get them back and embark the boat to Samos.
A beautiful sight when leaving the harbour of Kuşadası. Almost everybody is on the upper deck in the sun. When entering the Greek territorial waters the boatswain changes the Turkish flag for a Greek one, and also the music changes. So we get into the right mood for Samos.
Have we the intention to see the city of Pythagorio south of the harbour city where arrive, we first take a lunch on a shaded terrace. After finally having found the bus stop it becomes clear that the bus already passed. Taking the next one is no option as then we would miss our return boat ride to Kuşadası.
So we stroll through the city and find a nice little bay behind the harbour pier good for a swim and a sunbath until a passing ship with the text 'Nell Lines' on her port side makes us veer up and photo shoot both the ship and my wife (Nelleke with her nice lines). The next shot shows the ship again and also a sign with our surname on it.... We promise each other to come back to Samos for a week and will make an excursion to the island of Patmos.
Back on the tender to Kuşadası with lovely Greek music on the background which suddenly turns to Turkish music when almost mooring in Kuşadası.
A bird eye harbour view ends Part 1-3. May it be a little sleepy video, tonight we'll have to be fully awake. So see Part 2-3 and Part 3-3 too!

Ferry to Kuşadası
The 'Venus' ferry from Pythagorio, Samos in Greece to Kuşadası in Turkey. For a visit to Ephesus.
The Tourist and Travel Destination of The Greek Island of Samos, travel by ferry fom Turkey
The Greek Island of Samos, Gagou Bay and Kokkari
Samos is an island in the North Aegean Sea and one of the East Aegean Islands. Its capital is the town of Samos, formerly known as Vathi. The island lies very close to the Turkish mainland and is a popular stopping off point for travellers between the two countries as it lies on the route between Athens and Izmir. Tourist season in Samos, when you can expect much higher prices, begins the first week of May.
Samos was the birthplace of Pythagoras although he left before beginning his explorations into mathematics. Consequently, the island is littered with various things named after him from the town of Pythagoreion, the ancient capital, to hotels and tavernas. Samos is an island with age-long history. According to mythology, in this Aegean island, in the banks of river Imvrassos, goddess Hera was born. Today, in this location visitors can see the remains of a temple dedicated to her. It is an imposing building, one of the biggest and most important of its era.
The principal port of Samos is at Vathi, also called Samos. The other two ports are Karlovassi and Pythagoreion. Ferries from Piraeus and and the Cyclades usually stop at both Vathi and Karlovassi. There's a daily overnight ferry, the 'Nisos Mykonos' to Karlovassi and Vathy from Piraeus, Syros, Mykonos and Ikaria.
Hydrofoils to the Dodecanese islands depart regularly from Vathi and Pithagorion. Samos is also connected with all the islands of the North Aegean and the Dodecanese islands once a week through the shipping route from Alexandroupoli to Rhodes. Finally, Samos is connected on a daily basis more or less thoughout the year with the port of Kusadasi in Turkeywith two Greek and two Turkish boats. The trip takes two hours and costs € 35 one-way. Ferries depart at 8:30AM and 5:30PM. In low season, one ferry only departing Kusadasi at 8:30AM and returning from Samos at 4:30PM.
The island has buses although these will not operate on some public holidays e.g. May 1st. There are numerous rental agencies near the port in the city of Samos which rent out cars, motorbikes, scooters and quadbikes, bicycles with and without saddles packs are also available but the hills outside the main town of Samos will be challenging. Many of these rental agencies are open late and so it is possible to rent a motorbike from early morning until 9 or 10PM for €10 per day. With your own transport, you can explore much of the island in a day or two. There are also taxis. A taxi ride during the afternoon in high season from Samos Port to Pythagorion without traffic cost €18, no note that there is major construction (as of July 2014) around the Samos Port as new roads and wider walkways are being constructed, once you're past the port it's smooth roads there on out.
The main town of Samos can easily be explored on foot although there are some steep roads/steps away from the sea front as the town reaches the foot of the hills. Pythagorion is a 12km drive from the town of Samos and takes 20 minutes to get to the waterfront restaurant and bars.
Kokkari is a fishing harbour of Samos Island, which has now developed into a tourist center. Still, it preserves its old traditional face, with small houses and lanes full of flowers. Kokkari is on a small peninsula full of houses which climbs up to the top of the hill with a small harbour on one side and a superb pebble beach on the other. Surrounded by green mountains and the view out to the sea, it's worth a journey.
Near Kokkari are several villages like Platanakia, Valeodates, Staurinides as well as many others, which are all connected with streets or small paths. Hiking paths lead all around the island. Find many hidden pebble beaches, like Tsamadou, Tsambou, Lemonakia close to Kokkari.
